Food was awesome!!! But Service was even better!! Lucy was wondeful- pleasant, kind and caring. She made our last evening in Edinburgh just a top notch finished! We shall be back!!! Thank you Lucy!!!

I found a charming spot on the Royal Mile, initially drawn by its intriguing name, "Angela with Bagpipes." My experience, however, exceeded my expectations. The ambiance was delightful, offering a cozy atmosphere. I opted for the sea trout, which was impeccably cooked to a perfect pink hue. So good! This dish was beautifully presented as well. I also had the crab salad which was on this perfect cloud of bread. The broccoli was smoked over a bed of ricotta cheese. Great experience! Loved it!

I was feeling hungry for some lunch while I was doing some shopping and happened to walk into angels with bagpipes. I'm so glad I did because the food ended up being so incredible. All of the plates served are small plates intended for sharing and they recommend you get around three plates per person. I was there by myself so I opted for the fresh made bread with butter, the beef tartare, and the broccolini. The bread was amazing, but the beef tartare came with chips (or I guess as they call them in the UK, "crisps"). The salty crisps with the creamy tartar was the perfect combination. These three dishes were enough to fill me up and I was able to order a couple of glasses of wine to wash it all down. The service was perfectly attentive and the atmosphere was welcoming. I would definitely come back to dine here if I'm ever in the area again.

Not expected in the middle of royal mile. I was feeling a little peckish and needed a small but quick bite. Saw what seemed to be a wine bar with food and I was sold. Yes I know I'm in Scotland, yes I know Scotland has no wine of their own but I wasn't in the mood for pub so this hit the mark. I ordered the battered cod and a Caesar and it was the perfect size for a hold me over meal. If you're into anchovies I'd ask for extra on the ceasar. FYI They add 12.5% gratuity, which many places in Scotland now do. Being from the US we're accustomed to gratuity but it still slightly annoys me when outside of the US. Hoping the rest of the world doesn't pick up this horrible American habit as it takes away from the charm of other countries. Fish, crispy - salad, fresh - view, yes YES PLEASE!

    Best ever hot toddy.

It's cold out. You need something to warm your face/body/bones. The bartender at AWB made me the best hot toddy I've ever had in my entire life. Had their house smoked salmon plate to accompany. Can't wait to go back and try some other dishes.

    Oysters

I ordered oysters and Scottish crab here the other night. I had thought it was a special crab in Scotland, but turned out to be crab cake. That was a shocker. I do like the oysters. Very unique flavor.

Service is impeccable. Food quality is excellent. Highly recommend. This is an Edinburgh tradition for travelers

This restaurant is five stars all around. Delicious Scottish and British cuisine. My personal favorites were the eggplant, the cod fritters, the oysters, the crab crumpet and the haggish. Net/net: I loved everything. It's a beautiful space too with great service. If we had more time, I'd probably come here again!

Yes, five stars even though the place sits on such touristy road. Had the smoked salmon. Excellent. Great presentation. Had the fillet steak. Appearance similar to filet mignon served at an upscale American restaurants. Taste exquisite. Mine was prepared "medium". Tasted amazing. Glass of Malbec helped seal the deal. The restaurant experience was glorious

The food was delicious, server was good, the vibe relaxed. We just the starters mini haggis, cheese platter, and goat cheese with roasted hazelnut and beets. Must try place

One of the nicest restaurants, most elegant and peaceful ambiance, on the Royal Mile. The food is very delicious and worth the price, though they do have limited hours.

Battered cod was fresh and not oily at all. Scottish crab, lemon and crumpet was super fresh and delish.

Anyhow the OH persuaded me to give it a shot for a quick drink to shelter from the rain whilst we deliberated on a venue for dinner. I'm glad he did. In addition to a decent selection of craft beers, there's a hefty cocktail menu. I tried the Ginger Tom Collins & it hit the spot. Just the right amount of ginger to pack a punch but not enough to be overpowering. The OH had a pint of draft beer & seemed happy enough. The low ceiling means it gets noisy even if it's not packed. There was a stag do, 2 birthday parties and hen group as well as some other folks. It was only just possible to hold a convo at normal volume & be heard. There's a decent sized courtyard out the back too but it was too wet & cold to try it out. I'd definitely visit again but maybe on a week night when it might be a little less noisy.

Our choices were truly delicious. We started with the fish board, olives, and mushroom skewer. We loved them all. I enjoyed the cod main dish, while my wife finished the starters. The side of asparagus was also excellent. The mouse dessert was delicious but very rich, it's enough for 4 people. The cost of dinner was also totally reasonable. I recommend this place highly.

When we arrived at noon (opening time), the restaurant wasn't too busy. There is an impressive bar downstairs with many whiskies. We were led upstairs to the dining area. There is outdoor dining too that would be nice if the weather was warmer. Cool vibe, but it is kind of dark inside the stone walls. The menu is Scottish-focused with seasonal ingredients. We didn't want to overeat, so we decided to share a starter and a main. We got the Scottish venison fritters, which were ok. We enjoyed the pappardelle pasta (roast pumpkin and pecorino sauce, wild mushrooms, spinach, bacon and poppy seed crumb, crispy sage). It was flavorful and didn't feel too heavy. Staff were friendly and it was an enjoyable lunch.

A quick Google search later, we decided to add this to our "must visit while in Edinburgh" list. This wasn't our anniversary restaurant, of course, but we knew we needed to dine here at least once. It was a long walk from our hotel, but it was a nice way to see parts of the city that we wouldn't normally have gotten to. The restaurant itself is nestled in the basement (or downstairs) of a cute building. It's small in there, but they're very good at maximizing the space they're given. We settled in at a teeny-tiny table off to the side and swiftly ordered a couple of pints. The menu is very straightforward: you're either getting a meat and cheese plate, just a cheese plate, or pates. We decided to share the Mixed Meat & Cheese platter. We figured that we'd snack and drink some Scottish beer, then head off into the night to find our "real" dinner. Thing is, though, that combo platter filled us the heck up. The waitress came out with the meat and cheese plate and a box of bread, oatcakes and crackers, and my husband and I had a "where is all this going?" moment. But our pro-waitress dropped the plate on the table and popped the bread box into a shelf on the wall next to us - a shelf that neither of us ever even noticed, to be honest. The meat and cheese selections were delicious and paired really well together. Kind of hidden away on that shelf (holding the bread and oatcakes) were a couple chutney jars. That chutney - lots of fruit pieces and complex flavors - brought a lot to the cheeses. We really did love the food, the surroundings, the beer and the staff. I wish we had something like this back home.

The service was absolutely welcoming. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and even at 9p, mid week (when you might expect things to be winding down), the place was comfortably busy but not packed, but full enough to feel alive. Drinks menus came in little "confidential" envelopes, which instantly added to the fun. We ordered several cocktails that evening, and every drink was carefully crafted and flavorful, smooth and topped off with warm hospitality. I honestly did not have one bad cocktail. Besides the fact that both were into motorcycles (and one came to Edinburgh once and immediately backed up his bags and moved over from Italy - props), we found out that they could make a mean cocktail. We, of course, started on menu, but wanted to see if they could do any variations, which they not only did, but nailed: "do you like bitter or sweet" - bitter "Floral or not so much" - surprise me "base?" - gin Dunno what it was called, but it was one of the nicest gin drinks I had in a town that is crazy for gin at the moment.
