Before the actual adjustment patients will use either the traction table, physical therapy stretches, or electro-stim TENS machine to bring information to the pain area and allow for relaxation of the muscles before the adjustment of the bones. Dr. Nicolai checks on you during the warm up and will change the settings for comfort. My pain problem involves needing my neck cracked and that takes a lot of trust. Dr. Nicolai is very gentle and never forces anything. Sometimes he has to play the kid photographer and says things like "think about your right knee" just as he cracks my neck which is really helpful in relaxing for me. I've always left his office leaving better than when I arrived and happily recommend him to friends and the community at large for muso-skeletal pain management.

REALLY nice on the phone too and was willing to give my husband and I an appointment right away in the evening after work, which was great considering no one else seems to understand that people DO work. When we got to his office I was surprised at how big it was. The office is on the 3rd floor and the elevator was right inside the front door which was very helpful so you didn't have to climb stairs if you were in pain! The staff was so friendly and welcoming and Dr. Lois was so warm that I immediately felt comfortable. He's very knowledgeable and very helpful and efficient. I'm so happy that we found someone close to our new neighborhood that made us feel so comfortable right away. I also like the fact that he went to work right away and only does what you need. My husband and I had previously been to a chiropractor who charged us four very large copays and never did anything but ask questions, send us for expensive xrays and then talk about expensive treatment plans. $200 later with that other doctor, we'd received absolutely no treatment and never went back. "Come see me a few times a week for a little bit and we'll definitely get that fixed, no problem." After approximately 6 visits, icing every day, multiple times a day as instructed, I came away with...NEW PAIN!!! Not only did he not fix the problem, he created additional problems that I had never had before. Now it's not only my shoulder, but my neck is in constant pain. I went back and told him what has happened as a result of his work and his answer is "All appears fine. Maybe you should go do physical therapy instead." All is not fine. All is worse now than before I saw him. But suddenly when he's challenged on the terrible work he's done, the answer is not chiropractic help, but physical therapy. I came to Dr. Joe with the mindset that this was my last stop before I would need to get surgery, because I could barely walk or even put socks on myself without someone's help. Being in my young 20's, this was clearly not the route I wanted to take (surgery). After in depth conversations with Dr. Joe, he felt confident that in time I could be back to my normal routine (I am extremely active and love to workout/hike/ etc.) with the right program. So we got to work. And work it was, but well worth it. To this day I will always say that if it wasn't for him, I would not be working out the way I am at 36 weeks pregnant or able to do a lot of the things I love to do. It's funny because even after knowing him for all these years, he never ceases to amaze me with his knowledge and extraordinary capabilities. Most recently, I started to notice weakness in my left side. I couldn't left anything with my left arm. I first noticed it when I tried to lift my three pound laptop with only my left hand. No matter how hard I tried the laptop would not budge. I knew something was wrong, so I made an appointment with a neurologist. The neurologist confirmed that I had weakness in my left side and was concerned. He ordered a bunch of tests, some very painful, to rule out some of the more scary possibilities. After the MRIs and visits to his office...he discovered...it was...NOTHING. Nothing. He said the tests said I was fine! (besides a minor pinched nerve in my elbow) Basically, he said I could go home happy with the knowledge that I was 100% healthy. One problem. I STILL COULDN'T LIFT THINGS WITH MY LEFT SIDE. That is where the always brilliant Dr. Joe comes in. I went to visit him and told him about my problem. He asked a few questions, checked my strength, and then did a quick adjustment of my neck. This is where the miracle comes in. Immediately after receiving my adjustment I was able to lift things with my left side. I couldn't remember the last time I was able to do that. As soon as I got home, I passed the ultimate test: I was able to lift my laptop over my head. For the first time in my life, the left side of my body felt STRONGER than the right side. I am continuing to see Dr. Joe for this issue and am feeling better every day. You don't have to live with pain, discomfort, or the inability to do simple tasks like lifting objects with your left hand. Needless to say, not only was my back in bad shape, but my wife's spine was also taking a beating with the rigors of motherhood. We sought the help of a local chiropractor, only to find out that his technique, might have been suitable for field mice, and we found little, to no improvement. Unfortunately for us, we got roped into purchasing a 20 visit pack each. This was supposedly, "the best deal out there," and we had to take advantage of it, otherwise we'd end up paying more per visit if we paid for them individually. What a crock of "bull%#*&" that was. My condition barely improved and my wife and I, ended up just never returning. We should have attempted to get a partial refund back but instead opted to not use him again. Thankfully, Dr. Russo opened his practice shortly thereafter and finally gave us some relief. I could not believe the difference. Dr. Russo was able to accomplish, in one visit what the other chiropractor, couldn't accomplish in a dozen. My wife and I, finally, got some relief. We recently moved out of state but since I still work in Westchester, I make it a point to get an adjustment, every chance I can. Ditto for my wife.
