All of their properties are inexpensive. Sure, the floors were crooked, there wasn't central AC, and many parts of the construction itself were questionable. However, the place was livable and, with a little effort, felt like a home. As for their customer service, it could be better. They always picked up the phone when I called and did their best to answer my questions, though. When our stove went out, we had a replacement within a few days and a brand new one at that. My only complaint is that because they manage so many properties, they won't remember why you called or your problems the next day. I also am not happy with the fact that they don't have an emergency number anywhere on their website (I personally never used it). Remember that many people only leave reviews when they have a bad experience. Home Rentals rents to hundreds of Carbondale students and residents, and only a fraction are on here leaving a review. I'd recommend Home Rentals to a fellow student with a small budget, mediocre expectations in housing, and one that isn't too high maintenance.

About half a dozen times, I've called Walker Rentals about listings I thought would be quieter than my current rental. I politely leave my contact information and even let them know I can call them at a time that works for them. Not once in two years has anyone from this rental company EVER gotten back to me. They don't answer their business line regardless the time of day you call. And they don't return messages. I know everyone's under stress dealing with corona, but this behavior precedes the pandemic. The housing stock in Southern Illinois is poor--old, shabby, decaying, and noisy (MANY train lines everywhere, meaning constant train horns even in the middle of the night). But there's a state university here, so landlords rent out horrible units knowing renters locally have no choice but to rent anyhow. To be fair, Walker isn't the only management company that behaves this way. We've rented from a private landlord and another management company. Both turned out to be slum lords, refusing to address even health/safety issues they're legally obliged to address. But a lesson we've learned is--if the management company can't even be bothered to return MULTIPLE contact attempts (via phone or email), then they don't care about providing quality service. They know someone will HAVE TO rent their sub-par units so do the minimum work to get them rented. Don't even think about trying to get help if something goes wrong while you're renting. Shame on companies like Walker that can't even be bothered to extend the courtesy of a quick email or phone call related to the rental ads they CHOOSE to publish. My advice: if you can't afford to buy a property locally and share housing expenses with classmates..., consider moving elsewhere, if you can.
