Acupuncture is fab-u-lous! Yep. I'm wimpy and hate needles. I'm a delicate little flower. Lemme tell you about accupuncture, most of the time you can barely feel the needle go in and sometimes you don't at all. It's fleeting, like a mosquito bite. But no itchy itch afterwards. Acupuncture needles are not pointy or hollow and are about as thin as a strand of hair. See, mosquito sized. And you're a Wisconsinite, gosh darn it you are well experienced with mosquitoes! So no need to be worried about needles. If I can do it anyone can, just ask my accupuncture practitioner. Milwaukee Community Acupuncture operates on a pay what you can fee structure, with a fee scale ranging from $15-40 a treatment. They also have punch cards. Dude. Dude, I love punch cards. Pay for 10 treatments and get 11 sessions. Yep. There is complementary Rishi tea. Yep. The setting itself is incredibly relaxing. Soft music, white noise machines, plants. No exam tables, but recliners and blankets. Even little eye mask pillow thingies. Acupuncture here is done in one large space. You'll stay clothed. Take your shoes and socks off, roll your pants up a few inches and have your arms accessable. No peep shows going on here. They just put all these needles in me, now what? You'll get really relaxed. Some people fall asleep. Your worries become lighter and distant. You'll get to rest for around 40-60 minutes. I suggest that you come in for accupuncture when you're not pressed for time as you'll get much more relaxed. They offer easy online scheduling and have appointments seven days a week and evening appointments during the weekdays. Maybe you're having a bad day like I did today, then you can just hop online and schedule a same day appointment which are often easily available. Acupuncture etiquette: Speak softly throughout the space so as to allow for a restful environment. Refrain from wearing strong smelling perfumes etc so as to allow for a restful environment. I was hesitant about trying acupuncture mostly because of my fear of needles. I quickly realized during my first visit I had nothing to fear. It did not hurt when they put the needles in or took them out. The needles are very thin. I also did not really know what to expect, but Megan walked me through the process and what to expect, putting me at rest. You walk into this large room that is a bit warmer and has comfy recliners. After all situated and the needles were inserted, I relaxed in the recliner for about 40 minutes while listening to tranquil music and the white noise machine. I may have dozed off for a bit. They charge on a sliding scale of $15-40, which makes it much more affordable than most places that offer acupuncture services and allows me the opportunity to go three times a week. In today's world it seems like doctors are so quick to prescribe medicines and I was looking for a more holistic way to treat some of my aches and pains. If you're interested or curious about trying acupuncture, this is the place to do it. There are 6-7 acupuncture therapists and everyone that treated me was very nice and knowledgeable. I attended 8 sessions to treat shoulder and ankle injuries. Eight sessions is what the initial therapist prescribed. While I noticed differences in the form of new discomfort in different areas, I did not really feel that I gained much in the 8 sessions. There wasn't a discussion after the last session to discuss next steps, so I decided it might be best to stop after the 8 sessions. They schedule your sessions based on what works best with your schedule, which is great, except it resulted in me seeing 6 of the therapists with each having slightly different needle placement. I was skeptical about changing that up but I just trusted they knew what they were doing. You'll sit in a recliner within a large room where others are also being treated. That's where the "community" part comes in. I did not feel uncomfortable at any time, as each person in the room acted responsibly and respected each others privacy, as much as could be expected in the environment. Pricing for the sessions is $15-$40. They can explain that to you when you arrive or call. I scheduled my sessions online and in person with ease. I tried acupuncture for the first type as a desperate attempt to rid myself of a migraine. I have to say it did help quite a bit, it didn't complete get rid of my migraine but it allowed me to function again. Megan did a great job of explaining what acupuncture is and making the experience a comfortable one. Shhhhh....whisper in the waiting room. Actually, just whisper the whole time. This is a place of peace and serenity . I absolutely loved my experience at MCA on Saturday. All of my stress was relieved as I walked through the door. Maybe it was because I have wanted to visit MCA for a long time and I was finally there. But mostly I think the ambient music playing over the speakers, the kindness of the staff, the quiet of the clientele, and the healing energy were exactly what I needed at exactly that moment. I was a little nervous about the experience of acupuncture, but there was nothing to be nervous about. The "needles" are hairlike and flexible. Most of them aren't even felt when they are placed. The ones I did feel were minor and the feeling went away in minutes. All that was left was a feeling of immediate heaviness and the utmost relaxation. I felt energy flowing through my fingertips, and in the areas where the needles were placed. It was almost emotional how wonderful it was. Just as a little bit of perspective. I had a bad muscle pull from my ribs to my back, just from stress and sleeping wrong I think. It had lasted about 2 weeks and it hurt to breathe most of the time. That pain is totally gone. I love the sliding pay scale philosophy. They make acupuncture and alternative healing affordable for everyone. I love the collective healing philosophy. We surely are all connected. I wasn't sure what to expect with acupuncture, but was open to trying it out. I was looking to resolve some shoulder/neck pain and tension. After my consultation, I was recommended 12 sessions. The pricing structure is great, especially if you are fine with the community aspect. The payments are on a sliding scale, and you can pay what fits your budget per visit. When you are sent into the treatment area, there is one large room full of recliners in a circle, and if there is one open there that's ready (the basket will be placed on the chair and the blanket covering the recliner will be re-fluffed) you can take it. If not, I eventually learned that there is another smaller room off to the back right where there are some more chairs, so you can head there. Prior to beginning each session, an acupuncturist would check to see how I was feeling and sometimes took a look at my tongue. You should wear loose clothing, so you can roll up your sleeves and pant legs and once you are settled, go ahead and take your shoes and socks off and roll up your sleeves/pants. The acupuncture therapist will come by and see how you are doing and place the needles, maybe 10-18 of them. I found that most of them were insignificant as far as feeling, but possibly one needle each visit would irritate me after a while, always in a different spot. In the main room, there is what reminded me of a wind tunnel/airplane cabin sound, probably meant to be some white noise. You may find that there's someone snoring next to you. Most of the times I was there I found it hard to relax for whatever reason, although one or two times I did really relax and it was one of the most heavy states of relaxation I've experienced. Sometimes I would focus on one needle and just get really irritated by the sensation. I don't suppose that I'm easily relaxable. After some sessions, I would feel a sort of buzzing or vibrancy overall. After my 12th visit, I felt that I really hadn't seen an overall improvement in my shoulder and neck pain, and hadn't had any feedback from the acupuncturists, so I decided to give it a rest, however if you have an interest in trying acupuncture out, I think Milwaukee Community Acupuncture is an easy introduction. read more

Hi, thanks for taking my call. Long time listener, first time yelper! My partner and I just started coming here 3 weeks ago. Me for some disabling orthopedic issues in my back and her for some private issues that she can discuss if she wants. One word: WOW. The first time I went, the needles gave me a sedating/getting "high on your bodies own chemicals" affect! It was...WOW!! Energy channels getting opened up I guess. If you don't fight "it", you will probably fall asleep. The "needles" don't hurt at all- if you can even call them needles. This won't be an overnight fix for me as I have crazy-shoot yourself in the foot pain-but with the sliding pay scale, I can afford it. I am a skeptic. Correction: WAS a skeptic. But I was sick of being sick. Tired of being tired. If you skip your double latte frappe skippie java monster thingy coffee(can you tell I don't drink coffee??) for 2 days, you can afford the first session. THAT, my friends, is how affordable it is. Next, is the staff. OMG. Can they be any nicer? And attentive? And funny? And available for appointments? 'Nuf said! You can schedule on-line in the middle of the night, in your pj's with Ben-n-Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream on your lap! They won't know. They send you reminders via email. I personally like that. I'm currently receiving acupuncture twice weekly to help alleviate a variety of symptoms, and I can definitely see not only the physical but also the mental improvements. But let me back up. Acupuncture itself is relatively painless and is an overall relaxing experience, so don't be nervous about receiving treatment. The two co-owners of MCM, Olive and Amy, and extremely knowledgeable and very nice (as is their entire staff), so you'll always feel like you're in good hands. The way community acupuncture works -- how it differs from "regular" acupuncture -- is that you receive treatment while reclining in a chair (a recliner, duh) that is one of several in a large room -- as Rick notes in his review, this is where the "community" aspect of MCM comes into play, as you're in a room with several people. Each time you attend acupuncture, you have a quick chat with your acupuncturist, when you tell her how you're feeling, what sort of symptoms you're having, and so forth. She uses this information to decide where to place the needles. There is soft music playing and several fans going at the same time, so the people around you -- who aren't close enough to eavesdrop anyway -- can't hear your discussion, so you don't have to be concerned about your privacy being invaded. These sounds, the music and the fans, act as white noise that drowns out any discussion and any noises people might make. MCM shares its location with several other like-minded businesses, including Saffron Yoga Center, Cream City Chiropractic, and other massage/reiki/life-coaching businesses. They offer tea and water for clients, which is definitely nice when you're coming in from the bitter winter cold. And I can't stress enough how simple it is to register for appointments online -- it's such a user-friendly system! As other reviewers have noted, their pricing is quite inexpensive, $15-$40 on a sliding scale, so you could end up paying less than a yoga class for an hour of acupuncture treatment, which is a steal (and one of the benefits of community acupuncture). I have been coming to Milwaukee Community Acupuncture regularly for a few months now. From the first visit, I loved the experience. It's a very calming, healing atmosphere. I've received nothing but warmth, friendliness, and compassion. The acupuncturists are dedicated and committed to aiding each patient and the front desk staff is welcoming and helpful. MCA has treated me for anxiety, depression, allergies, migraines, jaw pain, and the common cold, all with great results. I had a sore throat literally disappear while in the middle of a treatment. Most things don't just vanish that way, acupuncture isn't magic (it's usually slow healing, actually), but it's been very effective for me in reducing symptoms and making them more manageable. There are five acupuncturists at MCA, and I see three of them. I started with Amy, and see her the most often, but I also see Anna and Olive. They are all amazing women, attentive and caring and invested in my well-being. Each acupuncturist may have their own style, but they keep treatment notes on each patient in order to give similar treatments to what you're used to. This keeps the transition between them smooth. Appointments can be scheduled in person, over the phone, or online (super convenient and user friendly). The sliding scale that MCA offers for payment has been crucial for me to get treated as often as I need. There is no income verification and there is no judgment. No one looks down on me for paying at the bottom end, and they even offer specials some months ($10 for students/teachers, for example). You pay what you can, and that's it. MCA trusts you know yourself best - for how much you can pay, for how often you want to come in, for how long you want your treatments to be, and even for touching on or avoiding certain points. MCA also practices trauma informed care, and unlike many other healthcare experiences I have had, every interaction at MCA has been positive and respectful. I had gone to Milwaukee community accupuncture for contact dermatitis. After about 6 sessions, there was no change and I thought acupuncture was not working. I stopped going and to my pleasant surpise, it actually worked.. The following week, I became almost symptom free! They are very nice group of people and they deserve our support! I've been seeing Olive now for a few months now with wonderful results. I came in as a method of relaxation prior to surgery, issues with acid reflux, continuing through the healing process and as a means to help get off reflux medications. I started in July and visit twice a week... I find it extremely beneficial. Olive and another practitioner I visited with listen to my concerns, things that need some attention (neck, arthritis, anxiety, etc.), inserts needles and lets me unwind for 45 minutes. There are ceiling fans I try and locate myself under but even during the summer months it is extremely comfortable in the rooms. Quiet music and white noise are playing in the background but being located near a busy intersection there is some traffic noise traveling up to the rooms - not a concern, barely noticeable. I usually hunt down an older recliner but new vinyl recliner chairs have been installed - they are fine, I just prefer something I can sink into a bit more. Pay as you go options, booking online or buy a ten pack of visits with one extra included. If I could give more than 5 stars I certainly would. read more

You might think getting poked with needles would be intimidating but it is quite the opposite. I've had 8 visits acupuncture treatments and I must say this is the best deal you can find. The woman are amazing here and make you feel very comfortable. You will have a consult on your first visit and a plan of care will be given to you based on your needs. They also have punchcards that you can purchase for as low as $150 (10 visits and one free) depending upon what you can afford. The atmosphere is very calm and relaxing and before you know you it will fall asleep. Just them know if you want to be awaken sooner. Parking is odd depending on the time of day you visit since its a commercial area, there are meter parking and a parking lot across the street. However, there is free parking as well. I've never had a problem. It's a nice and safe area as well. If you want to try something to help ease pain, I would say try this before taking pain killers.
