Having visited the museum, (We spent 5 hours there, including lunch at the restaurant) I will say I 'get it' and have much more of an appreciation for the bikes and the HD community. LOCKERS AVAILABLE We purchased our tickets at the front desk and checked our bags and water into a locker (No need to have money for a locker). If you're visiting in the summer, don't leave your sweater in the locker as the museum was SO COLD! Restrooms are also in this area. WHAT TO EXPECT You will learn about the beginnings and history of HD, their rapid growth, learn about the different parts of the bikes, see hundreds of bikes through the years, see the progression of the HD logo, see a wall of different colored gas tanks (I loved this!) and be able to sit on some bikes. There are info boards to read and it never felt too crowded. ON-SITE RESTAURANT If you get hungry, there's a restaurant next to the river. There was a wait time, but we sat at the bar immediately. I will say, there weren't really healthy options on the menu. We had a burger. HARLEY GIFTS GALORE There's a gift shop across the 'campus' from the main museum. A/C TOO COLD Like I mentioned before, my main complaint was that the museum was WAY too cold, which made the experience slightly miserable. Other than that, it was very interesting and I'd recommend a visit. I'm now completely FASCINATED every time I encounter a Harley on the street! Helpful?

The customer service counter had motorcycle windshields which I thought was clever. I appreciated that the staff member let me know the bathrooms are on the first floor so I went there first before heading to the start of the museum on the 2nd floor. So many motorcycles to see! It was fun to see how they have progressed over time. The engine wall was beautiful, very aesthetically pleasing. I most enjoyed the displays that included anecdotes from the riders. If not going on 4-1-4 day, the museum is $25.

Beautiful museum…read more The beautiful building is free to access from the outside, and inside (just the lobby area, where it is the most beautiful). The museum exhibits are inside the square building with an entrance past the lobby. Any art lover will be wowed by the beautiful exhibition. There are special exhibits at different times throughout the year, and these are great times to visit. The cafe/restaurant downstairs is also beautiful, with a gorgeous view of the lake. Food and coffee is actually quite lovely as well! It's a small, and overlooked part of the experience. The store also has lots of cool stuff, though as a local Milwaukeean, I'm thinking a bit overpriced to get anything personally.

This massive mansion was built in 1892 and is 20,000sf with 37 rooms and 12 bathrooms. Incredible! I recommend taking the time to view this amazing property. The tour is about 1-1/2 hours and you go through 3 floors. Everything on the first floor is original,, which is amazing when you think about it. It's so wonderful that group of women spearheaded to save this mansion. It's a gem.

I love everything about this event…read more For an entire weekend in September, nearly 175 buildings are free to enter and open to the public. There's everything from guided tours to pamphlet assisted self-guided tours to spots where you simply stop in and have a look around. We got to see inside places that we would never have otherwise had the opportunity to see. It's an amazing opportunity to get to know Milwaukee a little bit better (even if you're native to Milwaukee!) and the stories behind some of the beautiful buildings and architecture in our fair city. The stops we made this year were: +All Saints' Episcopal Cathedral +Ambassador Hotel +Basilica of St. Josaphat +Calvary Cemetery Chapel +Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist +The Fire Station on Broadway (the oldest fire company in Milwaukee, founded in 1839) +Frank Lloyd Wright's Burnham Block--American System-Built Homes +Summerfield United Methodist Church All the stops were extraordinary in their own way. My favorite was the Basilica. I had never been inside and it's breathtaking. Frank Lloyd Wright's Burnham Block was also fascinating and probably the most heavily guided of all the places we explored. My son enjoyed the Calvary Cemetery Chapel the most for the creep factor (a small chapel on the top of a hill surrounded by graves and containing crumbling tombs? He was delighted). Pro tip: They have a website which details all the stops. Our plan was to utilize that throughout the day to figure out where to go. However, (due to high volume traffic, I'm sure) the website was super slow on Sunday when we went. So, we used it to figure out our first stop (Ambassador Hotel) and then picked up the Doors Open paper guide there (which has all the same info as the website and each stop had a stack of them). Review 2400!! Doors…read moreOpen is one of my favorite MKE events, mostly because I am a huge nerd who loves architecture and our beautiful city! Fortunately I managed to marry a man who loves MKE history too, so we try to never miss this weekend. If you have not gone here are some of the stops I've really enjoyed: *Masonic temple on 30th and Wisconsin *Frank Lloyd Wright homes on Burnham *The Federal Courthouse *The model RR club in an old train station - this is the first year they've participated an it's truly a hidden gem! *Tge Joan of Arc chapel on MU's campus It's free, it's fun - be a tourist in your own town! Historic Milwaukee does a great job pulling this together every year - it just gets bigger and better. Many thanks to all the volunteers and docents who help make this event what it is. Also, they now have a mini block party on Michigan Ave - don't miss having a tasty drink from Swinging Door and a delicious empanadas from the Olano's cart!

kind of neat that MKE has two viewing areas :-) kinda of a drag that they aren't elevated :-( but…read morethey're paved :-) and lit :-) and closed overnight :-( the 6th Street observation area is not quite in line with the runway but if the wind is blowing from exactly the right direction it really wouldn't matter because this viewing spot abuts the remotest section of the airport . I'm pretty sure this is area is more of a facilities facility for freight than anything fun so planes coming in from the east turn toward the terminal before they get anywhere near here; not sure if any big planes land from the west because of the bridge... so there isn't much going on except the aviation equivalent of submarine races which is less funner when it's light out. on the plus side it's still totally free! but unlike the Layton Avenue spot you can't eavesdrop on radio traffic from the tower which makes me sad... :-( anyway, there's room to park and unfold a chair or two to idle away the hours on a warm afternoon but not much else. please keep your activities low key and low altitude because, well, you know... low flying planes in the area ;-)

Even though the Villa Terrace is an art museum, the real superstar here is the Villa/property. From…read morethe moment you step into the courtyard - complete with an impressive sculpture of Mercury - you're going to feel as though you were transported to a small Italian village. It's an exquisite time capsule of a place. And the views of Lake Michigan are the cherry on top. Your entrance ticket grants you access to both floors, the courtyard, the outside terrace and the grounds that you can walk down. There's small art exhibits that get rotated out every few months and plenty of community events including yoga, sound baths and a cafe in the warmer months. This place also moonlights as a wedding venue (in case you're about to tie the knot!) Entrance is $15 pp but there are free days offered throughout the year including during Milwaukee's annual museum days. And if you have a Milwaukee County library card you can checkout a pass for Terrace Villa which is how we got to experience this hidden gem.

Parking can be a challenge so get here early or plan for a little walk. The WestTown River Rhythms website does provide a couple nearby parking lot options with discounts for use during the event so check that out when you're looking at the music lineup. This is another great option to enjoy music outdoors during the summer months in Milwaukee!

Today was the 2nd annual Grand Salute car and bike show which is all voluntary and all proceeds go…read moreto disabled veterans and their families so I thought that I would take the time and add them to Yelp. This show is at the New Berlin VFW post 5716 with anything goes it looks like so no one is left out. The post was open for drinks a sign said if you want to go in but the show is outside with food and drinks. The show was a small one with probably local cars and bikes and I didn't bother to enter my car because I didn't feel like detailing my car for something with only two car categories, best in show and 1st place car. I'm estimating approximately 60 or so cars and bikes so if your a car nut than it's a nice time to look at cool cars on a summer day and be around other people in the hobby. I did not go into the post it self for a beer like I wanted to because the lot was crazy packed with peoples cars so the inside must be wall to wall people, more people in the post than the show.
