The museum exhibits are inside the square building with an entrance past the lobby. Any art lover will be wowed by the beautiful exhibition. There are special exhibits at different times throughout the year, and these are great times to visit. The cafe/restaurant downstairs is also beautiful, with a gorgeous view of the lake. Food and coffee is actually quite lovely as well! It's a small, and overlooked part of the experience. The store also has lots of cool stuff, though as a local Milwaukeean, I'm thinking a bit overpriced to get anything personally.

This museum pays particular respect to the Midwest states that fought for the North. It consists of 2 floors with the bottom floor being the main museum and special exhibits located upstairs. The dioramas and exhibits in the museum were all well done and had very good documentation. There is also a short movie shown every hour in the middle of the museum. This museum is constructed in the round so make sure as you go around it, you see every section. I would budget 2 hours to see it all. There is an admission fee and a gift shop along with plenty of free parking.

When you reach proximity to some of them, a recording will play. They didn't move around (so it's not too bad if you don't like dolls or mannequins or animatronics). Staff were calm and helpful and made it enjoyable. Highlights include an immersive 360 degree movie in the center of the museum that plays at the top of the hour (every hour? Not sure): it's somewhat intense and full of drama, but it's only 10 minutes long. It's called Seeing the Elephant. Another is a train car (at the start of the war) where you sit next to mannequins and they tell you their tales of being turned away for service, their hopes for a good outcome of the war, and the like. Yet another is the paddle boat at the end of the war, where the tales of the mannequins are more grim and the massive human cost of war (assassination, instability, death and dismemberment) pervades. The whole of the main exhibit is from the perspective of the Midwest, so it's rah-rah Wisconsin, Ohio, etc. It's unique. I don't know if everyone would like this, but the 2024 admission to the main gallery was $9 ($5 for residents), and I thought it was well worth it. I'd recommend it, even if I might not necessarily return anytime soon.

We always take a trip up to the Pilot House and then outside onto the high deck for terrific views of the lake, SF grounds, and everything else in the harbor (including a Milwaukee Fire Dept. fireboat). Staff are always welcoming and so very attentive to the children. We always make a stop at the food kiosk to get a snack (a selection of the usual packaged snack foods along with hot dogs and pizza). My biggest complaint is how slow and long the check-in process is. There's usually only one person at the check-in desk, and many days there need to be two. There's a line for members, but unless there are two staff members at the desk, what difference does it make? We waited with everyone else today, which makes having a membership feel like less of a great thing. But there still needs to be a quicker process. Today while I was at the front desk I watched a woman purchase tickets online, and even that was such a long and involved process I think i would've quit and gone home.

There are plenty of hands-on activities throughout for all ages and exhibits highlighting local individuals and companies as well. It's hard to say what my favorite area was because I enjoyed everything, but the aquariums, weather/ storm area and the corporate exploration station stick out in my mind as where I had the most fun personally. We didn't shop around the food or gift shop area but that could be an area we explore more next time. Discovery World is well worth the price of admission and the entire family is guaranteed to have fun while learning something new!

They even have a rooftop which offers incredible views of the skyline and features several large sculptures, just bw aware that it's closed for winter. Unfortunately, we didn't get to ride because the boys hadn't napped but it was so fun watching the trolleys and electric trains and hearing them go "choo choo" as my boys say. It isn't officially part of the standard tour just yet, but we happened to be before a special private tour so they let us check it out too. I would recommend this to anyone who is even mildly interested. The gift shop closes at 3, so be sure to grab any goodies before the tour if you are taking the 2pm.
