TLDR: Local gem serving the most authentic Portuguese food!
I would NEVER have found Mimo's on my own! I visited this local spot as part of a food & wine tour with Eating Europe (s/o to Gonçalo), and he handled everything. The restaurant is small and local. While they do serve pastries, they also have full dishes, including a special of the day.
We tried two traditional Portuguese dishes--the Caldo Verde and the Alheira--and both were SO GOOD!! Alheira is a Portuguese sausage traditionally made without pork, using either beef or poultry. Gonçalo shared a bit of history with us about its origin. As you may have noticed, Portugal is a country that is heavily catholic (ie all the cathedrals and traditional values you may have seen), but there has always been a Jewish community. During the Spanish Inquisition, Jewish people were persecuted and pressured to convert to Catholicism. One way neighbors would "check" whether someone had converted was by looking for pork products--since observant Jews don't eat pork. To avoid suspicion, Jewish families created alheira, a sausage they could hang outside their homes just like their Catholic neighbors. It looked like a traditional pork sausage, but was filled with other meats so they could maintain their dietary laws while appearing to conform. Super fascinating for such a simple dish, you wouldn't have known otherwise! The Caldo Verde was simple, homey, and truly perfect for the soul. I tried other Caldo Verdes in Porto for comparison, and Mimo's was the BEST.
Since it's a true local spot, the pricing reflects that--affordable and absolutely worth taking the unbeaten path! read more
