picture from one of my visits to their nyc store... but you get the idea

I discovered Minamoto Kitchoan near Rockefeller Center in New York years and years ago, and it promptly became one of my indispensable stops each time I was visiting the Big Apple. There was just nothing quite like it.... all the sweets were so perfectly formed... so delicately wrapped... and so unique in taste and texture - you did't find anything reminiscent of the Western confection imperatives chocolate, cream, or caramel. Here, every single description sounded intriguing and exotic. Plus, the way they're wrapped up make them tiny parcels of art. Then, about a year ago, I saw that there was Minamoto Kitchoan right here in Piccadilly! I have to say, having it so accessible sucked a bit of the magic out of it (why is it that something becomes so much grander when there's a pilgrimage involved?)... but it's still a marvelous wonder of a store... definitely worth at least one visit in your lifetime just to marvel at how different everything is. I'm partial to anything filled with either red or white bean paste... my favourite perhaps being the one that looks like a miniature Chinese Mooncake - golden brown with a decorative top and filled with red bean paste and a chestnut - yum! I'm sure it all depends on your palette, and I really thing there's something for everyone at this shop, but not *everything* I've tried has been fab - I can't do anything wrapped in their "rice cake" which is rather gelatinous.... Oy, I never could do that texture.

We stumbled upon this shop accidentially. My eyes grew big - I'm a Japanese food lover. As there are only few shops selling Japanese food back home we decided to give it a try. The price, to be fair, is high. We chose 5 wagashis to try out. Really - I am lucky it were only these and we did not buy more. The only two who tasted good were Tsuyaguri (whole chestnut in chestnut paste) and Suikanshuku (Sweet white bean paste covered with dried persimmon). The jelly one was totally fluid and spread over my hands while carefully opening it (it should have been able to overturn it onto a plate...). The other two tasted too unnatural. I can recommend to have a look at the ingredients before buying. I ate many wagashis in the past, but these are definitely not on my favourite list. There is such a gap between these and really fresh made wagashis who do not have a storage life of several weeks. Another drawback for us was also the packaging: most of the wagashis were wrapped in plastic more than just once.

Nice sweets and cookies from Japan. One of the best part us the attention paid by shop staff in wrapping the purchases

I could not resist picking up a box of Maccha Mochi, practising a few words of Japanese and rushing home to enjoy my own mini green tea ceremony.

For a tiny place, we were here a while because there's a lot to choose from. Counter service was courteous and prices aren't anything to complain about either. The last decade when going back I've never found good ones in a pick n mix or in the bags at the grocery stores, I was only able to find cheaper versions and then I stumbled across Hardy's in London! Wow they have the most delicious Bon Bon's in every flavor you can possibly think of! I needed them to last a while so I bought a pre mixed bag for around 3 pound that had toffee, apple, blue berry, vimto, lemon, strawberry...you name the flavor and they had it! The other cool thing about this shop for UK residents is that they have all the "American" candy along with Flips pretzels, peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and other goodies. To me I obviously have this stuff everyday but my local friend was just as excited about the American candy and treats as I was with the bon bon's, we definitely walked out with a sugar high!

Upon entering Fortnum, you are WOWed by the spectacular view of beautiful chocolates, teas, and antiques with 4 floors of stairs to more shopping from home and goods to tea pots to perfume and finally their tea room to dine in. Our server was able to help us get seated immediately and answer all of our questions, constantly checking in on us, giving us new plates, refilling, and organizing our table to look more aesthetic :). HIGH TEA / AFTERNOON TEA SET We chose the high tea and afternoon set which was ayce basically with unlimited refills of the pastries. This was around £95 per person which was a bit pricey, but the experience felt very high end indeed. The pastries were varying in regards to quality consistency and also depends on your preferences. Each pastry or bite has a savory or sweet taste and is paired uniquely. Each set also came with your choice of a tea pot and sparkling tea which was delicious. The honey tea non caffeinated was decent! HIGH TEA The sweet pastries were my favorite from a crunchy but creamy blueberry tart to a decadent chocolate mousse. I wasn't a fan of the rose cake, but the yogurty apple one and sweet bread were decent to my liking (definitely depends on your preferences). I did really enjoy trying new things though and being able to get more of whatever I liked! I also really like the side of marmalades and buttery cream with the scones. Both the regular and fruity scone were delicious. The sweet set also came with an entree and the beef Wellington was coooked to perfection although a very small bite. SAVORY TEA I was not a fan of duck liver mousse at all, but really liked the crab cake and savory scones that came with a type of cream cheese spread and red onion marmalade. A different take from the sweet set. Their scones are perfectly crispy on the outside but nice and moist on the inside. This set also came with finger sandwiches which were delicious: a variety of salmon and cream cheese, cucumber, hummus, and ham and cheese. It is a great experience for first timers when you are in London and definitely a good place to pick up teas and goodies to bring back home.

Guess it took a while for my palate to get used to their recipe? We tried the following & nothing really stood out & screamed * Milk Chocolate Fudge - supposed to have pieces of fudge but all I tasted was a creamy choco bar. It was good * Dark Chocolate Berry Boost - this obviously wasn't for me since I think it's a sin to mix fruit w/ my chocolate but no raving feedback received regarding it being outstanding * Belgian Milk Chocolate - basic milk choco bar * Chili Dark Chocolate - this had very little chili flavor & def no heated afterbite kick * Special Toffee - the toffee was chewy & made my teeth stick together. The best of the bunch * Venezuela Milk Chocolate - this tasted like every other Milk Chocolate bar I tried It was all good & I'd even say it was A-OK, but to rank it as Yay!
