I had an outpatient procedure here where they put me under…read more Upon waking the nurse shoved a glass of ice water in my face and told me to hurry up and drink it, then urinate and get out because she had other patients that needed the room. I was just waking up and in shock. I looked around while still groggy and she got even more angry at me that I hadn't started drinking the ice water and started shouting that I was being charged for half a day already and that if I didn't hurry up and get out, the hospital would charge me for a full day. I asked how long since I had been out of the procedure and she informed me that I had been out of the operating room for 30 minutes and 45 minutes is the maximum they allow for outpatients to use the room. 45 minutes and charging patients for a half day and a full day if you don't immediately wake up and run out the door and say thank you. It's sad that hospitals are allowed to charge people like this and the UPMC business ethics sure shine through their employees with how they treat customers. I mean.. imaging being charged $60,000 to be treated like a piece of dirt and then shouted at, and told afterwards that if you don't hurry up and gtfo, you'll be charged even more. I imagine if you were an insurance auditor and really started running numbers to calculate how many outpatient surgeries were done in a day versus how many half day charges for a bed were being sent to them. If I were an insurance company, I'd be sending all of my auditors to UPMC Bedford and asking to look through their books. If I were a lawyer, I'd be looking back on how long they've been doing this and at how many other locations, this practice is happening. I imagine that a really good lawyer could make their retirement happen early on what he or she finds.

However, I am very happy to say that ALL of the Doctors, Nurses, and Secretaries who I met that day at UPMC were extremely friendly, helpful, and professional. It was very obvious that they were working very hard to make me feel at ease and their professional attitude made me feel confident that I was getting the best possible care, and I was! The procedure was done flawlessly and fortunately with good results for me. I of course do not look forward to having this procedure done again in the future but at least I know that I will be in good hands when it is done again by the knowledgeable, professional and caring Staff at UPMC Bedford Memorial. I was transferred to Latrobe Hospital from Westmoreland Hospital. The difference was like night and…read moreday. The staff at Westmoreland were mean. Not helpful at all. I needed a bed change and the blue haired nurse said she would be back as she left the room. An hour later my niece came in and I told her that I wasn't being taken care of. She said she passed the blue haired nurse sitting in the nurses station. My niece changed my bed for me. I asked for a new IV bag because it was finished. She said no it's not ordered. Bull! I know I needed lots of fluid since I wasn't allowed to drink. The PA badgered me. Saying that if I didn't get contrast for an CT scan I would have to leave the hospital against medical advice. She said no other hospital would take me without using the contrast. It was elder abuse! Well at 3 AM I was transferred to Latrobe Hospital. I thought I was in heaven. The employees (mostly nurses) were helpful and kind. They took care of me without the bit--ing of the WH. If ever I need an Emergency Room visit it will not be Westmoreland hospital. I'm done with them! Latrobe Hospital is wonderful. The nurses couldn't have been more helpful. They settled my nerves by treating me with respect.

Mixed feelings about UPMC Altoona. I don't go to the hospital much but when something is wrong I do…read morego and seek medical attention. If it is something I know I can wait until I see my PCP I will. To begin my experiences here first I will say every time I do come the staff are always pleasant with me and my plus (1) in case I need them. The emergency room is clean and I have never notice anything alarming on that area. I was admitted once in 2020 for a critical blood transfusion my room was clean, board updated, requests were followed through, and over all the staff were professional. The experience of obtaining medical diagnoses is the worst thing about this hospital. Very poor communication on what steps or option's are going to be taken to fix my condition. I was handed a clipboard and said you need a transfusion do you agree if so sign here and here and we will get you upstairs. I understand ED's are overwhelming and busy but they could explained these are your results this is the option we can provide for you and patient education in general was not presented well. It was 'either sign or don't you are critical' are the words they used. Once I was placed upstairs everything was expected and had no delay in care. I got what I needed no complications and was able to leave. I never got follow up paper work or anything to continue on the path of not needing another transfusion. I had to tell my PCP and they followed with plan of care. I have a had other instances of going to the ER where I went with my complaint they did what they needed to do and usually sent me on my way home with "everything seems fine follow up with your PCP". I look on the patient portal after some time because access and making the account with their portal is slow and not an easy process plus I have faith in health care workers that they are telling me everything I need to know at that time but obviously I need to be a little more guarded and be more thorough when results come back because their is numerous findings that were not mentioned and these findings are actually important to a patient. I understand if you go in with GI complaint they are focused on the GI system but when they did the MRI and degenerative discs, fractured ribs, and etc were in the findings and it's not in your past medical history or mentioned to the Doctor or the admissions office of current conditions you would think there would be some communication with the patient. If it's in the test where they provided the imaging it's worth mentioning to the patient. The wait time for Altoona ED is horrendous. I understand completely not being seen right away and turn of events happen out of control, critical patients being flown in, and of course the short staffing portion. I understand it's a triaging and certain conditions with over ride others even tho someone was there 3 hours before them. Waiting 9-10 hours with no communication, no high critical events on the over page system or any walk in occurred throughout that time or the ED waiting room being busy. I was never disrespectful towards the staff but it seemed way too extensive to wait that long. If it was a staffing problem or something communication could have been presented at the time of arrival that we are expecting a longer time then expected to see patients or something of the sort but it was nothing. If I would have known somewhat of a time frame I could have went to another hospital to seek medical attention. Overall: this hospital needs better communication and patient education

After a sudden attack of crippling severe pain & nausea, we called for an ambulance to take mom from a local hotel we were staying in while in Huntingdon for family reunion. ER doctor was baffled so admitted her for observation. Since it was a Saturday no tests or specialists were available for 2 days! I mentioned moving her to larger hospital. They assured me it wasn't necessary. But 4 days later of watching her suffer in tortured pain, we insisted they transfer our mother to The Geisinger. They said she was probably just constipated and needed an enema. I found out later Dr Waddle made a chart note on the 3rd day that mesenteric ischemia must be considered but they still didn't move her or treat her until morning if 5th day and only because we insisted. By the time they medivaced her to The Geisinger, her small intestine was necrotic & she was practically dead. Despite emergency surgery, we had to withdraw her from life support and watch her die slowly for another week. Sixteen days of hell and my family has been devastated for all time by their bungling incompetence. It cost my Dad's sudden decline in health & he died after 18 months of horrible loneliness and grief. The drs at Geisinger told me if she had been transferred within the first 12 to 24 hrs she would probably be alive. Instead they just let her rot to death and had the audacity when I asked them to do a better job of managing her pain that "we think your mother is confused about her pain" After they told us what had caused the initial attack of severe pain, I was able to find her fatal condition in a 3 minute Google search which stated "any elderly person admitted to ER with pain disproportionate to physical findings, acute mesenteric ischemia must be considered". They killed my mother! I will never forgive their lying to us. Dogs get better treatment than my mom did. To make matters worse the floor nurse was a total witch & yelled at my 83 yr old father who had been thru a stroke and had atrial fibrillation because he laid down on the extra bed in the room. He was physically and mentally exhausted watching his wife of 62 yrs dying before his eyes in excruciating unmanaged pain which they thought was her exaggerating her condition. I hate this hospital! This was where she had been brought into this world and they were the cause of the excruciating and unnecessary sudden end to her life. I tried to get justice but drs lie and cover for each other. Stay away from here if you want to live!

When she arrived to the ER by ambulance she was handled very quickly which you don't see from high volume hospitals. The staff has been wonderful and have literally went above and beyond for her and us. The food isn't that great but what do you expect from hospital food. Five stars especially for a hospital that isn't a trauma center, which I'm sure a lot of people that are not in the medical field don't understand. I have had no complaints.
