Ring Dog is a local rescue group dedicated to finding homes for bully breed dogs (pit bulls, APBT,…read moreetc.). The dogs are pulled out of unsuitable homes, or from kill shelters, and put in foster homes until they are adopted by their new families. Ring Dog has stands in Carytown on the weekends, and also participates in local events from time to time. Ring Dog tests for temperament before rescuing, so you can be sure that the dogs are not people-aggressive. They also get all their dogs up to date on shots and preventative medicine, and they are all tested for heartworm and spayed/neutered as well. Plus, in many cases they'll take their dogs through Canine Good Citizen training if they are in the foster home long enough. The volunteers who run Ring Dog are all great folks, who genuinely love dogs and want to see their foster dogs adopted out to great homes. Many times when they find a good dog, they'll pay for any medical needs (parvo, mange, heartworm, even amputations) before adopting the dog out. They also keep all the medical paperwork on their dogs and give copies to the new owners, and get them microchipped in case they get lost. Ring Dog does home visits before adopting dogs out, and decides on adoptions on a case by case basis. They also have several of their volunteers who are trainers, and they will troubleshoot problems if necessary. My husband and I fostered several dogs for Ring Dog, worked the adoption stands, and eventually adopted two of our dogs from there as well, so we can vouch for what a great rescue this is. The only thing I wish they did was offer training for first-time bully breed owners- bully breeds have specific training needs and behaviors that are different from other breeds, and a training class would be really helpful, especially when adopting a young bully breed dog.

I especially like that they rescue dogs that are not purebred border collies, because apparently some rescue groups are snotty about that, go figure. We went to Sandra's property near Richmond and were able to see a large amount of dogs at once. Ironically, the dog we drove down to visit was at the vet that day but it turned out well since our dog chose us. She was the most needy and least border collie looking dog there (flat coat retriever/border collie mix) and she is an amazingly smart and loving dog. I really appreciate that there are people like Sandy out there willing to rescue dogs 24-7. Our baby was rescued from a kill shelter near the VA-TN border and I am forever grateful we have her! I have fostered several dogs through ARCBCR and it was a good experience as well. ARCBCR is willing to do whatever it takes to save border collies (and non-border collies) and it's a great organization that I highly recommend. I told her I would check into it but that I would also continue the training the foster had started. Well 4 days or so into having the dog the foster's giving me information about a trainer I had to take the dog to who was paid $100 an hour for his service. I told her I couldn't afford that and that I was working with the dog. After she told that me not being able to afford that was an even bigger problem as she was worried I couldn't take care of the dog, and that me training the dog was not an option I told her "supervisor" to come get the dog as I didn't need the micromanaging foster telling me how to take of my dog. They got the dog two weeks ago tomorrow. I have yet to get my money back as "The treasurer is a volunteer and she'll get to it." Mind you I had to sign a very intrusive contract and they called my vet and my landlord to make sure I could have and take care of the dog, and they needed their money before I could get the dog. All like a business. But when it comes to getting my money back they are volunteers so please be patient with the treasurer. My check should have gone in the mail the Monday after they got the dog back but I have yet to see it and Anne has not replied to my last email about it either. I was more than prepared to love this dog and work with its aggression issues, even getting a pretty nasty bite the first night I had her, but their demand I use their expensive trainer and doubt that I could take of my dogs (I already had a beautiful, sweet well-behaved border collie) was too much. I just want my money back now, not when the volunteer treasurer gets around to it.

I missed having her around. A couple weeks later we went out to a rescues open house at a pet store to get my doggie fix. After the first one, we stumbled onto another one. This one was BARK's pet adoption day at a pet food store. I walked around the cages and saw this beautiful white German Shepherd laying in his crate in the regal way only a Shepherd can pull off. He looked at me with his soft, warm, brown eyes and I asked to see him. The volunteer got JoJo Shep out of his cage and the dog jumped up on me and showered me with kisses. So maybe he didn't have the best manners but he did have plenty of love. BARK had rescued him from a shelter who was going to put him down because of the horrible heath condition they found JoJo in when he arrived. Bob (who runs the place) did not accept that and took JoJo to the BARK vet and after a few weeks, the dog was off deaths door. As a testament to this care, over a year after adopting JoJo, we went back to let JoJo say good bye to Bob because we were moving to California. JoJo ran up to him and almost tackled him!! Even after all that time away, the dog still remembered the kindness shown to him! Bob and the rest of the people at BARK are commitment to the welfare of the dogs in their care. They spare no expense in caring for these dogs and do their best to place them in the best home possible. If the dog is not placed, they can live their life out on the BARK farm. If I was a dog and found myself on the street, I would want BARK to pick me up!!

We weren't really looking to adopt, but then we saw Kelsey at the Cosner's Corner PetSmart and she was a miniature version after our Sugar who had recently passed away. Our daughter fell in love with her and the rest is history. We enjoyed working with B.A.R.K. so much that when Sugar's sister died a few years later we adopted another girls (Midnight) from B.A.R.K. with equally exceptional service. They are truly an excellent facility to work with and will go the extra mile to ensure all their animals are as healthy as they can be before they are allowed to be adopted out. Most of the time, the sick/injured animals are treated at their local clinic and are then fostered out until they are heathy and properly socialized!!

The "trainer" explained that while she never had any organized training herself, "she has always had dogs". Well... I've always had dogs but that doesn't qualify me as a paid dog trainer. The trainer insisted on using her own dog for the obedience demonstrations. There was very little instruction on how to get an untrained puppy to obey. I felt like the class was just there to observe how well her dog behaved. I'd have to go home and watch YouTube videos so that I can actually see the instruction demonstrated by an actual dog trainer. I finally gave up with 3 weeks left after we spent two whole classes watching her dog demonstrate the agility coarse. This wouldn't have been so bad except for that this is supposed to be a PUPPY OBEDIENCE CLASS, not an agility class. I look forward to my dog being able to perform high level agility exercises some day but right now I just want him to "stay". Oh well... I'll just watch some more YouTube videos.

He is the 3rd and best bulldog to be a part of our family. Our first two, from other breeders, had nothing but health problems and we honestly questioned whether we wanted to go thru it again. When we were looking at other breeds, a friend of mind had purchased a bulldog from George and Kim, and she spoke so highly of them that we just had to reach out and Ultimately, take the plunge. It was the best decision we ever made!! Chester has been amazing! No allergies, no joint problems, no tight tail, no ear infections......all the things we were accustomed to. Now I must say, for being a bulldog owner for 17 years, you would think I know what I'm doing right? Wrong.....whenever I have a question or concern, I'll have to do is reach out to George and Kim. They're not like the car dealer that you become best friends with until the car is purchased...... then it's crickets when you have a problem, that is until you get the call a couple years later, "hey you ready to buy another car?" Every time I have a bull dog question, I start texting Kim and she's quick to respond. She has even been on vacation for a few of my questions, and takes time away from her family to help me out. I'm embarrassed to say it's happened a couple times, but it doesn't matter.....Kim always has time to help bulldog babies. Today was no exception. Gave my Chester a bath this week, thought I dried him well and sure enough, didn't get his tail thoroughly dry. Red, stinky and hair coming out..... Bad Dog Mom. I felt awful and started down the google rabbit hole just to finally have the lightbulb turn on......Text Kim ya dummy!! Mama Kim to the rescue. After a complete work up he has been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. The neurologist encouraged us to reach out to the breeder to make sure my puppies parents are not bred again since the diagnosis is genetic. We sent them an email two weeks ago and sadly we have received no response. I am hoping that anyone who purchased a puppy from the L litter in January-February of 2025 has not experienced any similar issues. We are very disappointed in the lack of response from George and Kim.

It was labeled right ear and for a week that's what she got. At which time I went to my regular vet and her infection is in her left ear. The vet showed me it was in her left ear. I tried to get a hold of the office manager, and she declined to take my calls. Instead, they decided to fire me as a patient after going therefore 15 years. If I could give them a zero, I would.
