After my visit yesterday and expressing to Stacey that I was really in need of a refresh she started my visit with a face to face conversation. It felt very genuine that she took the time to connect, hear my needs and guide me in the right direction. I've waited a while to review to see if I would like my cut and color better as time went on. The answer unfortunately is no. I moved to Royal Oak this year and I needed a general color refresh, my grey roots hidden and my cut cleaned up. I decided to try a local salon instead of driving back to my old place 30 minutes away. I explained to my stylist that although my hair is fine it is also wavy and will get frizzy. I also told her I tend towards brassiness if the color isn't done right, and I absolutely did not want to see any red tones since it doesn't work with my skin tone. I came here because of all the great reviews, and I looked at their website and Instagram photos. I did see that most of the coloring was the balayage with light wavy hair as the style. Not what I wanted but I assumed they could do something else. My stylist was younger and new, so maybe someone with more experience would have done a better job. The color came out brassy and reddish, exactly opposite of what I requested. The cut was pretty basic with side bangs, but she styled it with waves, which didn't really suit me. I'm 60, not 25. When I finally washed it a few days later I noticed that it was really dry and even the conditioner was leaving it feel harsh. I could barely comb through it even with different products to smooth or soften it. I switched shampoos, still same problem. Styling it left me frustrated because of the color as well as the texture which wanted to frizz constantly. The only way to control it was to glop on lots of styling product to tame it. I spent most of the summer with my hair in a pony tail or bun. On the positive side, it's a lovely place, everyone was really nice, my stylist was super sweet, the owner checked in during the process and it was enjoyable enough. Just sad the final product - my hair - wasn't to my liking. I guess I'll be driving back to the other side of town to visit my old salon. read more

I get that they only work on one person at a time, but my hair did not look any different than when I walked in. I was going on vacation. I wanted blonde hair, which I already kept up on highlights. I chose the person with the most experience and the fact that they were exceptional in the blonde area.. I am sorry they charge way too much money for the work that is done on your hair. My usual hair salon I've been going to for years closed without any notice. I only found out when I was calling to get my hair done, so I started to panic because I had no idea what color mixture was being used previously. I am light brown with some gray that I get colored red with highlights, and I have naturally curly hair that I wear straight, so it's complicated. Starting with the call to get pricing and make an appointment, I felt I had made the right choice. Madeline is just plain awesome!! She made me feel at ease immediately. She listened to everything I had to say, gave me her input, and it was a really a fantastic experience. We decided together what direction to go in. She's very sweet and knows what she's doing, that's for sure. Not only did she do a terrific job on the color and highlights, the cut is great too! It can be such a pain looking for a great salon, especially not being from the area so I searched on Yelp and stumbled onto MHC. I wish I would've taken a before and after picture because my hair was hideous prior to my visit. Steven did a great job covering my greys and correcting my hair color. There was also some issues with the water while my getting my hair done and Stacey was awesome about letting my friend and I know what was going on. What a gem in Royal Oak!!! I was hesitant to switch salons but needed more flexible hours for my color and cut every 4 weeks. My daughter recommended that I try Mint and I can't imagine my hair without them. Hailey I does a great job! She's fun and anxious to please but somehow still able to help me know what's best for my hair. I love the acceptance of everyone, the general vibes you get when you sit and listen, and the pride the owner takes in her place. I've even witnessed a pep speech between owner and workers. Update: Stacey contacted me and set up another appointment to refine the haircut. She was really nice and made sure that end result was what I wanted. She was awesome through the whole appointment and I can definitely recommend the place! I had an appointment today at mint, and I was really looking forward to it, having driven from downtown Detroit. The place is really nice and they went above and beyond taking precautions for COVID. I asked for a layered cut (which I've been getting for years now), to basically freshen up layers. I even showed a few photos of what I wanted. I thought the stylist listened and knew what I wanted through the cut and the blow dry (which was blow dried with curls so I couldn't really see the shape of the haircut). It looked good at the sal. However after I came home, I realized that the bottom 3/4 of my hair is just one straight cut and only the top portion was layered. Even worse, the top layers stand out and don't "blend" with the bottom part. I'm disappointed at the haircut I got for the price. I now need to re-start searching for another place to get a haircut. read more

Absolute failure of management and poor communication. First of all scheduling an appointment was tremendously difficult- was told I would be given a call back and nothing. Finally got my appointment and was explicitly told they would keep my card on file and $25 would be charged for failing to cancel within 24 hours. Three days before my appointment I attempted to cancel because my grandmother died and we had to leave town. I texted back "cancel" to the confirmation text. No response. I tried to cancel online and found it was inaccessible to cancel online. So I called and was greeted by a frantic hair stylist who told me that they would give me a call back because they had no one at the front desk and was never called back. Was charged $220 for services I never received. After contacting management I was asked to prove that I called with my call log- I provided a screen shot showing my call log wouldn't go back that far- I've been making MANY call phone calls to family after my grandmothers passing. I even sent the text showing I tried to cancel via text. The entire thing made me feel like I was viewed as untrustworthy- what else do you need? Should I provide a copy of my grandmothers death certificate? Ultimately was told that they're still going to keep the $220. Truly pathetic. Save your money and go to a business that actually values customers and doesn't treat them like garbage. read more

My first requirement for a salon is employee interaction. If I'm going to spend time anywhere I don't want to hear gossip or snide comments. Yes we've all been to that salon! Ok now my stylist Natalie that has taken the job of creating a beautiful platinum blond out of me. Background - I was born platinum until the ripe old age of five and then went dark brown - as my mother would say dishwater blonde! She takes the time each and every time to get it right. Giving Mint Hair Crafting a review is well overdue on my part. I started seeing Taylor Mack 2 years ago. I started with tape in extensions which gave me the mermaid hair I always dreamed about. Taylor was upfront about the cost and not just for installation and hair but also how much it would be ongoing for maintenance. It was great to have those expectations. I decided to take a break from extensions about 6 months later and Taylor always gives me a great HEALTHY blonde color. Since seeing Taylor Mack, based on her product recommendations and adjustments to my hair routine and her all around hair magic when I'm in the salon my hair is the longest and thickest it's ever been and all while being blonde! Which is no easy task. The salon itself has a great chill and inclusive vibe. My interaction with the other stylists and guests during my visits have been nothing but positive. Apart from Taylor Mack's genius behind the chair you can also count on her for some great genuine conversation about life as well. I can't recommend Mint Hair Crafting and Taylor Mack enough. My second visit at Mint... I've been twice for a cut and color with Taylor H. She is so nice, kind and funny and most of all - have gotten the best color and hair cut. It was really hard to find the right mix of someone who listens to what you want and who is skilled enough to do it but also professional enough to tell you what might work best for you. I have ALWAYS struggled with my hair. It's big and frizzy and curly. I've been straightening it since the 5th grade resulting in a lot of heat damage. I started seeing Taylor for my hair about a year and a half ago and my hair has changed drastically for the better. Where to start! I have long, thick, heavy, black hair. I usually get my hair trim and never style at great clips/super cuts. I wanted to change it up and actually get a real haircut treatment at legit hair salon. I was browsing through IG looking for a hair stylist. I stumble upon on Taylor! She was looking for a hair model to help with her hair portfolio! I gladly saw it as a sign to officially cut my hair and to help her out as well. I messaged her on IG and she booked me in for a hair appointment. As I walked in, I was greeted by a few people and they offered me a drink of choice. The place has a nicely decorated wall with a friendly atmosphere. I hear that the owner brings in her dog, which I wish I could of seen!! Taylor: My first impression of her, she's so cute and kind. She started with a hair wash with a treatment. It was pretty relaxing and my hair was instantly soft. She made sure I was happy with my length I was taking off. I wanted her to do whatever with my hair, I'm so easy going that I just wanted her to have fun with my hair. She taught me how to curl/style my hair which was helpful to me! I love the products she use in my hair because it smell delicious! She cut about 5-6 inches of my hair off, gave me layers, texture, volume, and thinning out my hair as well. I got a haircut and style with Shannon this morning and had an awesome experience! This was my first time here but will definitely be my go-to salon from now on. Shannon did an amazing job and was so friendly. My haircut was exactly how I described to her and she styled it perfectly after. They also took covid precautions very seriously by having my temperature checked, having me use hand sanitizer right when I walked in, clean stations, and of course wearing masks. So happy and excited I found Mint Hair Crafting! I have been bouncing around for a while to find a salon that is both reasonable in price and trendy enough to know what is in style. I found both here at Mint. I was in need of getting my hair cut on very short notice and was able to book online and get an appointment within a few days. In my experience, it can take up to several months to get a simple trim appointment. I viewed all the hair stylist Instagrams to get an idea of their style and ended up going with Steven because I felt like his vibe was on the same level as mine and I saw right. Steven did an amazing job, I haven't left a hair appointment that happy in a long time. I was in and out in under an hour and the price was perfect. No sticker shock, no gimmicks, just a great haircut. The parking situation is annoying but that is to be expected anytime you park in Royal Oak. I do however like that the salon is right next to public parking making it an easy walk. The salon is very clean and trendy and the people are very sweet and down to earth. There is even a little puppy that walks around the salon looking all cute. She listened to my concerns and for the first time in my 31 years on this earth, I actually felt heard by the person doing my hair. She explained every single part of the hair coloring process in detail and was happy to answer all of my questions. My consultation with her was, hands down, the best hair consultation I have ever had with any hairstylist. By the end of my visit, Hailey had me looking and feeling like a brand new person. My hair color is absolute perfection and I'm obsessed with the haircut she gave me. Having just gotten married (and having grown my hair out for the wedding), I was looking to do a pretty major chop. I was a little nervous because the last time I got bob length hair, it seemed to fall flat and make my face appear wider. However, Caitlin did an amazing job that got rid of my concerns! After a couple truly awful experiences, and a head full of fried highlights, I came here after receiving numerous recommendations from a local Facebook group. I have to say, Steven did a great job. I was a little on edge, but he was kind, calm, and completely put me at ease. I explained what I had already been doing to help treat my hair (olaplex, and the step 3 treatment, along with the olaplex shampoo and conditioner), and he helped me by explaining a protein treatment (KeraTriplex) would help too. Then Steven explained the difference between the two treatments, and how they work together. After a relaxing treatment he gave me a fantastic hair cut and we talked about a game plan for my hair moving forward.
