Our father, Ted Nardolillo, recently passed away after living at Brandywine at the Gables for…read morealmost one year. For most of that time he was physically and mentally competent. But for the last three months his physical health deteriorated substantially and became very depressed and forgetful. In the last month he had hospice care and a 24 hour aid provided by others that were able to provide the appropriate care without having to move him into another room let along another facility. I won't bother comment in any detail about the facility's amenities - the food, the activities, the cleanliness of the facility. They were fine and more than adequate I am sure there are other, more expensive facilities that could provide a higher degree of amenities and more creature comforts. But what was critical to our family, who never thought either of our parents would ever live anywhere but in their own home or with one of their children, was the care and attention paid to their emotional and physical needs. Our father was a warm, funny and caring person. For him to be comfortable he needed to be surrounded by people who what type of person he was and treat him with the care and affection deserved of such a lovable person. Brandywine and the other providers they brought in, were that and more. They truly bonded with him and made sure he was cared for. If food or his meds needed to be prepared in a certain way they went out of their way to accommodate. If he was cranky and depressed as his condition worsened they were patient and sensitive. I could give plenty of examples of the large and little things they did to make our family content that under his most difficult days he was being properly cared for. When the time finally arrived and our father passed away many of the aides, nurses and other staff treated him and us like family. In an occupation where failing health and ultimately death is not an uncommon occurrence they seemed truly touched and concerned by his worsening condition and grieved with us when he passed away. They even attended his services and stayed with us well past the "respectful' time we thought others in similar line of work would spend. My family will never forget the loving care and respect they showed my father and his family. When you see that type of treatment by paid professionals who only got to know him during his final months you can't help but feel lucky that we picked the perfect place for him. Five stars does not do justice for what these people did for our father. Mark and Wayne, two very grateful sons

When it came time for the paperwork there was another text exchange asking about the 2 year guarantee because my parents would fall short of it. She text me "Just be transparent on the financial form, that way we can plan for when they start to apply" That Friday the director started getting involved asking questions. Only to wind up denying them despite what I was told. Director Melissa Hingher told me she was going to talk to someone else at corporate and get back to me. 1 week later hadn't heard from anyone. I escalated it to their corporate office when Kenneth Segarnick emailed me back saying he received my email that was sent to the CEO Brenda Bacon. We scheduled a phone call and he backed them 100% didn't care what was in writing. Stated he wasn't a party to the conversation, but I have it in writing. Bottom line be careful with this place, they will tell you what you want to hear but won't back it up, they are liars simply put. Makes me wonder if they do this with admissions, what would they do when it came to care.

Choosing a senior living facility is a stressful and a very emotional process. There are literally…read morehundreds of facilities to choose from in the state of New Jersey alone. How does anyone make the decision especially in light of the fact that you are making the decision for someone else. Because of the way I'm wired, I first approached this endeavor in a very analytical way. I visited fourteen (14) different facilities and collected data from each one. I developed a very comprehensive matrix and compared each facility based on 9 different criteria. I developed a ranking system and forced ranked each one. When I completed my matrix, I stepped back, stared at the data and came to the realization that I still had no idea what to do. Something was missing from my data but I couldn't figure out what it was. Let's be honest, most all the facilities are made up of beautiful buildings that are nicely decorated, well lighted and clean. They all have the proper ratio of staff to residents, they all offer enrichment programs for the residents and of course, you're always told that the food is just about one step below gourmet. However, when I stepped back and thought about the meetings I had with the fourteen facilities, the only one facility that I walked away feeling really good about was Reflections At the Gables in Brick, NJ. The key word there is "feeling". I remember being so confused and overwhelmed because I really had no idea what to do but all I kept saying was that Reflections gave me a "good feeling". Being a very digital person, it was very difficult for me to make a decision based on feelings and intuition rather than data. Well, in the end, that's what it came down to and unquestionably, I made the right decision. Everyone at Reflections truly care about the residents. They treat the residents like they're an extension of their own families. They take what they do personally and don't just go through the motions because it's their job and they need to do just enough to pass a state audit. That attitude is evident at every level of the organization which includes the leadership and administration. There are countless examples I could offer of the selfless and caring behavior of the staff at Reflections and I firmly believe that I would never have found this degree of caring at any other facility. To me, caring, attentiveness and sincerity are the most important traits that any facility can offer your loved ones. Don't let all of that glitz and glamour influence your decision. In the end, it's all about the team that is in place to care for your loved ones. I believe the sincerity of the team defines the success of the organization. In my book, the team at Reflection At the Gables is number 1!

Failure of Care in ER Placed Patient at Risk…read more Our experience in the Emergency Room at Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center was not only disappointing--it was dangerous. The lack of urgency, incomplete evaluation, and failure to follow through on care placed my 74-year-old father's life at serious risk. My father, who is diabetic, has a brain shunt, and is in kidney failure requiring dialysis three times per week, arrived at the ER at 11:00 AM June 22nd after falling and losing consciousness. He is a medically fragile patient for whom every minute matters. Despite this, he was not evaluated until 12:30 PM--only after my mother had to ask for help after 90 minutes of being ignored. The charge nurse's response--"can't you see we're busy"--was dismissive and unacceptable given the situation. He was then left lying in a hallway bed for approximately 10 hours with minimal monitoring and no sense of urgency, despite his high-risk condition and in pain. Dr. Chetna Singh first evaluated him around 1:15 PM, ordering a head CT and knee X-ray, followed by an EKG at 2:00 PM. By 3:00 PM, she returned and stated nothing was broken and planned to discharge him. This decision was made despite my father repeatedly complaining of rib pain, which was never evaluated or imaged. Additionally, the knee brace that was ordered was never applied. At 3:45 PM, during routine discharge vitals, his oxygen level was found to be critically low at 80%--a potentially life-threatening condition that had gone unnoticed for hours. Only at that point did Dr. Singh order a lung scan. That scan revealed three broken ribs--an injury that had been missed earlier and could have contributed to his respiratory decline. He was only then given pain medication and his primary care physician, Dr. Marley, was contacted. When Dr. Marley arrived and examined him, he immediately noticed that one leg was shorter than the other--an obvious sign of a possible hip fracture. He ordered a hip X-ray at 6:30 PM. Despite the urgency, this imaging was not performed that evening. After more than 10 hours in a hallway bed--during which serious injuries were missed and his oxygen levels dropped to dangerous levels--my father was finally admitted and transferred to a room around 9:45 PM. The following morning, Dr. Marley returned and was alarmed to learn that the hip X-ray he ordered the previous evening had still not been completed. It was finally performed around 10:00 AM, confirming a hip fracture that had gone untreated for nearly a full day.
