The village of Lake Placid sits right on Mirror Lake. This is where the activity happens year-round, this is the focal point of the entire community. It will be obvious at first sight. The 124-acre lake is the anchor of the entire community. In Lake Placid, there are two lakes- Mirror Lake from which the Inn takes its name, and Lake Placid Lake where the village derives its name. It begins with size - Mirror Lake is much smaller. Walking Its' perimeter is only 2.75 miles, while there is no walking around Lake Placid. the lake which you see around Main Street- that is a mirror lake. Mirror Lake: no motorized vessels are allowed, It's very calm. it's kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders, a swimmer here and there, and a few fishermen. On the opposite end of Mirror Lake Inn is the town and village beach. in the summer- In the warmer months you'll see joggers making their way around the 2.7-mile route. It's a great path for walking and biking, also there is a small beach on the side, facing Inn. located at the south side of the lake, a great spot for kids also saw a lifeguard and public restroom - great fun it is! Though only opens in summer though (also this beach is known as Lake placid beach) but in winter- the lake freezes over. With ice that's consistently a foot thick, Mirror Lake becomes a prime winter sports destination. From the two-mile-long ice track to pond hockey, and a toboggan chute, Mirror Lake becomes one of the busiest spots in Lake Placid during the winter months. Visiting the lake placid- there is no fixed path, we googled 'Lake Placid boat riding' and reached that spot hoping there will be a place to admire the lake but nope, it was a small spot, that's it. It's not very popular like its sister lake (Mirror Lake) Parking: Just near to Olympic Center or mirror lake, there is a municipal parking area, of course on busy days, it's hard to get a spot, but I would say, wait there and grab a spot because it's damn cheap...! 50 cents per hour. On the street side, it's $2/hr (that is also cheap) but 50 cents /hr. is dirt cheap. and after 6 it was free (Saturday it was)

Small park, a few benches close to the water and life guards are out until 6pm.

Bathwater beach in July. Fortunately the water is warm and there are life guards out. Unfortunately, the lifeguards are only out until 6pm... which I consider the best time to go swimming.

HG is a dramatic natural stunner. It's compact, STEEP and loud with ROARING waterfalls. Many falls, you cannot see from above and without endangering self. There's been many fatalities over the years so swimming and climbing down to the falls are heavily discouraged by the local government. There are several very short trails from the road for viewing but the trails were ridden with poison ivies! Also, there were poured granite gravels in an effort to alleviate a landslide (which is rare in VT) from the paved road. One could cross AFTER (not upstream) the Gorge to cross to the opposite side. If you desire to, I'd recommend wearing a pair of water-shoes and perhaps not soon after rain. HG is unlike any other rapids I've seen in VT. It is worth visiting to see the extreme changes of water flow and power of nature. It's an out of place, tiny compact version of gorges that you see out West. Parking is sparse...a handful of spots above the Gorge. It was a bit of a downer to see so much (signs) discouragement. Obviously peeps don't stop coming....maybe they could embrace and build safeguards for everyone to access and enjoy this beauty safely?

A gorgeous (and dangerous if not respected) gorge complete with waterfalls and swimming holes. Had I not read about it, I would not have known of its previous history... on first glance it appears to be an untouched site as there are no obvious signs of its previous industry. The gorge attracts a number of different types of visitors... photographers, hikers, swimmers, etc. There is a very small parking lot to house everyone stopping in. There is very strict signage posted around the property warning of the danger the site. Heed these warnings as there have been over 2 dozen deaths spanning the last 50+ years in this area. It is easy to see why... the power of these waterfalls can be heard and felt as you approach the rim. If you choose to swim here, do so in the lowest basins (avoid the upper and its currents) and be safe... stay aware of your surroundings. I was more than content viewing the falls from a safe distance despite the elevated outdoor temperature that day. The risk that some people took during my short time there (hanging over the rim for photos, wading through the waters of the upper pools) was just incredible. Be smart. There are several short paths that deliver you to various views of the area. Tread carefully and you will be rewarded with some spectacular views. I just happened upon this location on my way to hike Camel's Hump but I'm so glad my GPS brought me down the dirt road this is located off of. It's worth the visit!

We stayed at the High Peaks resort right next door, and their boats weren't out for the season yet - Mirror Lake Boat Rental to the rescue! NOTE: if you are planning to go soon (this review is being written on 4/27/21) this boat rental shop will be VERY DIFFICULT to find. You need to look for the sign I have in my photos that tells you to text the number provided, then follow the dirt path behind the construction to the little desk that will give you instructions. This shop technically does have open hours, but we had to text the owner Greg upon arrival and then waited for him to come down and rent us a boat. In the future, I would recommend just texting before heading down there and meeting him when he's already there. Check out their website for full details of cost and times and such. $30/hour for most of your standard boats, including the fun bikes! We opted for a paddle boat so we could save money and be out on the water together. The hour flew by even though it was a little chilly when the wind blew. Cash only, which is inconvenient but understandable considering this biz is fully outside, and there's an ATM at the resort across the street if you need it. This is a great way to see Mirror Lake from a new vantage point and is TONS of fun. Happy boating!

Minimum 2 night stay and while you stay there, you can have free access to the day use state parks such as Sandbar State Park (not dog friendly) or Niquette Bay State Park (dog friendly) to name a few. We stayed on site 76 which was big and open. On a packed weekend, this site won't give you much privacy like the other campsites but it makes up for location - near the bathroom and water spigot, nature center, playground and beach. This and the others next to it would be a good site to reserve as a group of friends who are looking to go camping together. When we went, it was raining and so we went to the nature center where the staff there was very inviting and engaged our 4 year old to do an activity. Great spot for the kids to do indoor activities if it rains. Beach is a rock beach (no sand) and a great view of the water. I do wish it was sand but we still managed to have a good time in the water. Also the playground was very updated and my daughter enjoyed going there whenever she can. Everyone, including staff and campers, were all so nice there. It was our first time camping here and the staff explained everything to us and even offered us some free produce that they had. Firewood $6 (fairly dry), free kindle wood, ice $3.

Just the drive here makes it worthwhile, even better if you can do it in the daytime and without rain. Add to that nice secluded little campsites, functional shower facilities, swimming at the beach, sporting equipment and bike rental, and (get this!) actual pleasant human beings for staff and you basically have a perfect idyllic getaway. It's dog friendly, a quick drive to Burlington, and surrounded by other local attractions. I was only here for two nights, but I hope to return someday. Maybe it was just the campfire-grilled steak and corn on the cob, or the way the sun looked setting over the lake, or all that fresh almost-Canadian air, but I think I'm in love.
