Misch's is a Calumet City survivor of the highest degree. I used to live in Calumet City as did two of my three (3) sisters, the last of us left by 1995. On July 19, 2021 was the first time I ever set foot in this store but I had their Polish sausage countless times at so many events of my family and friends. It is excellent! Our church in Hammond Indiana served it recently to my surprise! I tried their Hungarian smoked sausage but I like it with more paprika and spices added. Nonetheless, it was very good! I will be back soon again as I'm often at Holy Cross cemetery visiting my departed sister that served Misch's Polish sausage for many Christmas holidays. Long live Misch's! Sto Lat! read more

Without question the best Polish sausage in the area! Located in Calumet City, it's a small outdated no-frills butcher/grocer. They offer several kids of sausage, however I can only vouch for the Polish, it is fantastic! Our family is split into team fresh and team smoked, so of course we prepare both. Excellent seasoning, heavy on the garlic, actual casing giving you the snap that you forgot you're supposed to get with sausage, and a minimal amount of icky things (bone,veins, and all the other things we pretend don't end up in sauasage). The past few years we've even been bringing some to the inlaws who were used to multiple varieties in their old north side neighboorhood, but have moved to burb with no local sausage source. They love it too! For Easter and Christmas, they sell out fast and do not take orders so be prepared to have to come back a couple of times if you don't time it right. There will be a line of old Polacks (said with love, as I am one) telling stories about the old neighborhood while they wait their turn. I have been eating their homemade smoked polish sausage for well over 60 years. The store itself is a time capsule and has not changed and has limited stock. However the meat is delicious, plentiful and reasonably priced. They are famous for their polish sausage fresh and smoked also very reasonably priced. I used to live down the block years ago and the smells would get you running down to the store for the freshly smoked sausage. Relatives who have moved across country always have me bring them sausage. Nothing this good is found anywhere else. Misch Bros is the absolute best place in the area to buy Polish sausage. My family used to frequent Komos when we needed our Polish sausage fix, usually around the holidays. But sadly, Komos is no longer, and we have rediscovered the delicious glory that is Misch. It's not in a great area, but it's by no means a place that should be avoided. The building looks old and run down (and it probably is), but don't let that dissuade you. It's part of the charm and the history- this place has been around forever. Misch has all kinds of sausages and meats, but like I mentioned above, we go for one reason and one reason only: Polish sausage. Growing up, I would insist to my family that I only liked smoked Polish sausage (that is, the red-colored one most commonly sold in grocery stores) and that I hated fresh Polish (a lovely light gray color). I stood by this until my twenties, when I finally ate Misch fresh Polish. Turns out, I just hadn't met one I liked yet, and that sausage is here at Misch Bros. Both varieties here are delicious. They're well seasoned, and they have the good old fashioned thick skin on them, the way it should be. There's also a minimum amount of "shrapnel" (that is, bones and those weird mystery hard nubs I'd rather not think about), which is great because that's the reason I don't eat more sausage in general. If it's the holidays, come prepared. You will have to stand in line outside with every other Polack (said with love, as I am one) in the area, and throw elbows at crazy old women in order to get your hands on some. But you know what? It's worth the craze and the early hour, because this sausage is delicious, and should be a staple of any Polish Christmas or Easter dinner in the Calumet area. read more

( Red meat warning: If you are a vegetarian stop here.) I live with my 81 year old Dad and he can be a real picky eater. He only eats certain foods and among his favorites is Polish sausage (my Mom, sister and Grandmother used to make it ). And good Polish sausage is hard to find so I took my sister's advice and went Misch Bros. grocery which is a short 3 mile ride from our house. The building Itself isn't very inviting. It kind of looks like a small warehouse. No signs, no windows, just two doors. When I walked in, I could smell the sausage wafting through the store. I knew that I was in the right place. The meat selection was great. I picked up 3 lbs. of fresh Polish and another of my Dad's favorites, a hard-to-find item, called kiszka. (a.k.a. Polish blood sausage). They had some smoked sausage that smelled really good, and some really fine looking t-bones for $8-$10. Also fresh red ground beef, ($2.49 lb.) ground pork ($1.49 lb.) or mixed ground beef and pork ($2.29). I picked up some of the ground beef knowing that I could always make burgers or tacos. Located in Calumet City, the interior of the store looked rather old, and other than a small produce section, there was a lot of empty shelf space. I hope that this isn't because they are ready to close down, or maybe everyone shops there for the meats only. When I got to the checkout counter, I was surprised to find out that they did not accept credit or debit. No big deal, just thought I would let you know. Although the place is low on ambience and decor, I highly recommend this store for their homemade sausages and meat counter. When I was growing up in Cal City, Misch was THE place to get Polish sausage. Everyone knew who had the very best and it was always Misch. There's something special about it--the place has been there a long time and it hasn't changed much at all. From the dated exterior (a good thing) to the sound the automatic door makes and most importantly--the smell of the sausage when you first walk in--this IS Cal CIty! So many memories of my childhood going into this place, the familiarity, the sights and the smells... Sadly, the area around Misch has gone downhill in the past 15 years. The last time I was there, a bunch of thug-wannabee teenage kids were loitering in the parking lot. Never would have seen that years ago. I fear that Misch will close its doors someday and the sausage won't be available anymore. That would be a shame. Although Bobak's is excellent, Misch has something very unique in their smoked Polish that is unlike any other you can find. Use to go to my Uncle's butcher shop right down the street But after he retired my parents started to buy here. I'm now 69 years old and moved to Michigan 20 years ago and still drive the 3 hours top stocked up for a year. Up here nobody can make any good fresh or smoked. Last time I was there was disappointed they didn't have homemade Kiszka. My daughter doesn't understand her old man when he takes two coolers plus those cooling bags when I go down. Many years ago I lived in Calumet City, where my neighbor first introduced me to the very-best Polish Sausage around. I've since moved and continue to travel to Misch's for their meat selection, especially their sausage. Both the fresh (my favorite) and the smoked (my husbands favorite) are delicious, along with all their other fresh meats they have. I will be shopping for sausage on Good Friday, I will be there nice and early, waiting in line at least 1-hour before they open. The line gets long on Good Friday for the Polish sausage. I generally buy polish sausage for Easter about 5-6 days prior, however last year I went on Good Friday (yes they are open on Good Friday (same hours 8:30-7pm) and will close for 3-hours between 12 - 3pm, and reopen till 7pm. Anyways, last year I didn't go early enough, and the meat was already gone in the morning. So they said to come back after 3:00pm and they would have another full amount of sausage, which they did. I ended up getting there at 2:00pm and waited in line. Another long line was forming, so make sure you get there early. VERY BEST POLISH SAUSAGE !!! Misch is probably most famous for their fresh polish sausage. Versus their smoked polish which is also very good. They also sell meat sticks in packs of ten or more. They're like a softer meatier beef jerky stick. My kids love them as a snack.People come back to this area just to get their sausage. I pick up the sausage for family get togethers. I take it to my mother's on holidays. If I didn't, my 78 year old mother would travel the 50 miles to get it herself. One of the last true polish delis left in the area.
