Okay, store. Seems to have a large variety and decent prices, but unfortunately, they didn't have tomahawk steaks or turkey legs that I was looking for to grill. I only ended up buying some ready-made chicken tamales and some wood chips. They also need to fix the freezer section. The few items they had were all covered in ice. It's not a good look. read more

Stopped by to try some of their food as they were having a cook out. As an approached the stand, a white female with dark hair wearing a sleeveless shirt rudely said the menu was on the other side of the stand not even looking at me. As I tried to order another female was texting on her phone and as i went inside the building to use the bathroom, (3) other employees were all on their phones. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a hot dog. The pulled pork wasn't very good. As I was leaving the stand the same female was smoking a cigarette still working with food. read more

There are positives and negatives to buying meats at Howard & Sons. First of all, they are a survivor butcher shop located directly across from a major grocery store. While Jew.l has butchers walking around in butcher's long white smocks, to tell you the truth, they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. They might advertise fresh picnic shoulder pork roast, however they don't know the difference and will bring you out a blade cut. Infuriating! Howard & Sons has real butchers that are able to distinguish different cuts of meat one from another. Howard & Sons butchers are there to further customize the meat you select. Like grinding the meat twice as an example. Selection, you can't beat Howard & Sons that has all kinds of cuts before your eyes. Yes! They have ground pork! Yes, they have specialty items! All varieties of sausage and will offer to make a certain type of ethnic flavor at your request. Where Howard & Sons can improve is on lowering the prices that can be more competitive. Removing items that are clearly turning quickly as this is truly bad advertising. We want to keep independent butchers in business and thriving. Good meats and varieties that can not be found at chain grocers is imperative to providing the public with the best options around. read more

I was a customer for many years. I would purchase the non meat pierogi a few times a month. I bought some tamales marked cheese and jalapeño in the freezer. After thawing, I saw that they were in fact chicken. I brought them back and the manager proceeded to open the package and tear the tamales apart to see if they were actually chicken. I got my $2.50 back but am no longer a customer. read more

The place is really close to my house to the point I can walk there. The butcher shop is old school to say the least. It has the scent of a place that's been in business forever. Once you get used to that it has tons of options for every choice of meat. Burgers. Brats. Steaks. Chicken. Plus a they have freezers full of other exotic options. They also have a discount section where they close out some steaks. During the summer they have cookouts where they sell some of their items grilled. Definitely live cookout weekends. read more

This is an old fashioned butcher store that was doing a Memorial Day Weekend cookout, that I happened to be driving by after leaving 3 Floyds. Pretty much ANYTIME these days when I am driving around and see some one cooking out in front of their business or really even just cooking outside to sell product I have to pull over and see what's happening. In this case there was a big tent set up outside H&S for what looked like a big grill-off. A line of folks were standing by and this fantastic smell coming off the grills that were loaded with brats and other sausages was intoxicating. Turns out that for a very reasonable price you could buy some of their grilled product, chips and a drink. I ended up getting the Polish stuffed with peppers and onions and the Italian stuffed with mozzarella and green pepper. The Polish was spicy and had a kick which combined with mustard and their home made relish was fantastic. The Italian dog was also very good, just no kick. Folks were polite and serving people rather quickly. Peeps that know me know that James is not a huge fan of Chicagoland (yeah this place is in Munster, but Chicagoland stretches from the Wisconsin border all the way thru to here) and I especially hate driving around here. But I will say folks around this area are dead serious about their sausages and this place reflects that. I regret I didn't pick some up to bring back home but my next time there I def will. Can't speak to their other offerings but if I lived nearby I would proly be a regular customer from what I saw. I never do bad reviews but I'm making a exception today. I spoke with Adam the butcher on Thursday September 21. We are visiting family in Florida for a reunion. My mom is 91. Celebrating her birthday. Wanted a whole beef tenderloin cut in steaks. Adam was excited to tell me he could trim, cut steaks, with leftover ends, then freeze and wrap for us to put in our cooler for the trip. Scheduled Sunday at noon for pickup. We were leaving the next early am. When my husband arrived today they couldn't find our order. Finally it took 4 people to find a note with my name on it. Adam was off Sunday, and the manager said they'd do it anyway but then argued about whether we called it in appropriately. And the Tenderloin would not be flash frozen. Needless to say at 25$ a lb x 6lbs the bill would have been steep. Told them to forget it. Don't trust them now. I have to scramble and find an alternative now. Howard's should be able to handle orders in a more professional way. Very disappointed. Won't be back. read more

Absolutely the worst service I've ever gotten anywhere. Malibu Barbie behind the counter was more interested in her phone. I was the only customer in the store and got totally ignored. I went to Howard's on 11/9 to buy short ribs. I usually arrive earlier in the day and Matt (I believe that was his name) usually cuts my short rib order for me; but on this day I arrived in the afternoon. A woman was working behind the counter and had ZERO interest in helping me. She told me they couldn't cut short ribs, that I'll have to place a special order for pickup the next day and that the butchers were gone. Although I had seen several familiar faces who have taken care of me before. As I walked towards the door I saw "Matt" and he was able to fill my order. I have been a customer of Howard's for +5yrs and have never seen such a thing. There was clearly something going on with this lady. I don't want to say it's racial but Howard's has no POC working there. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Since I was a kid my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and teachers have gone to Howards for their fresh meats. You always recognized the building by the large cow affixed to the roof of the building. Once I moved to Schererville though it wasn't always convenient to drive all the way to Munster. But just this last year they expanded and added a new Schererville location, minus the cow unfortunately. The story was that the city of Schererville wouldn't let them add a cow to the building. The food is awesome. If you ever want fresh meats from steaks, brats, chicken, pork, etc then you have to check them out. Plus they have their frequent buyer program that will entitle you to future discounts. read more

Howard & Son is the place for all of that. Howard's is a local institution. It's refreshing to be able to go to an actual butcher and not a meat department full of partially frozen meat stocked by kids who have no clue. The staff at Howard's is always so courteous and pleasant. They will offer suggestions on cuts, cook times, and recipes. The prices can be steep but you pay for quality and if you stick to the specials you'll be right in line with the prices at your local grocery chain. Whether you are looking for quality Boars Head lunch meat, beef for a party, a rabbit for stew, or a meat pack for the freezer they have you covered. Their homemade sausages are delicious and their 10 pound buckets of Italian Beef in au jus is just perfect. Special request, just ask. And I have noticed some negative reviews commenting on "the smell." That smell, while it can be assaulting if you are unprepared, is the smell of a meat processing/packing facility. It is the same at any butcher that actually processes on site. Any place selling you meat should smell like that. Give it a try, you'll be back! read more

In a day and age when everything is packaged and portioned meat from the Iowa Beef Processors, it is nice to see that there still are a few butchers out there ... and it seems like they work at Howard & Sons. Nice selection of beef throughout the store - whether you have an interest in prime rib or any kind of steak. Some offerings are per piece and some are by the pound. In either event, try it all. The Howard & Sons bacon was very nice ... and you can get just the amount of pieces you want. They also have capon and duck and fresh turkey (HoKa from Waterman, Ill). There's nothing more attractive and romantic to me than a local butcher, especially one that's long-standing and so close to my house. Maybe a local barber...but that's it. For me, Howard & Sons has all the things that a local butcher needs to have, but there are a two major complaints that knock it down for me. First, is the smell. I understand a butcher's isn't supposed to smell like a candle shop, but the few times I've been in H&S's, the place smells really really strongly of...well, meat. As in, open a package of hamburger meat, stick your nose into the patty and huff kind of smell. Much like how a restaurant that has dirty bathrooms suggests their kitchen is just as poorly kept, there's something about such a potent beef smell that is unsettling to me. Second is their selection. I understand that they're at the mercy of their target demographic. But as a seller of meats in 2013, I think it's short-sighted to not have at least SOME options for grass-fed or organic meats. I personally really don't care about whether the chickens I eat were given 2000 sq acres and a college education, but I do wish they sold grass fed beef -- if you've never had it, it's awesome. I haven't been here in months, so maybe they've changed this. I'll add another star to this review if the next time I visit either the smell has lessened or they provide at least one option for healthily produced meat. It's awesome to find a real butcher that will cut to order if you like. Want a big steak or pork chop...they can hook you up. I get all my pork shoulders there for my award winning pulled pork and the quality of meat and the cuts are excellent. I stopped buying meat at the grocery store because I'll talk quality. Also they do these great lunch cookouts on the weekends, promoting their meats...go on their website for the dates, well worth the visit. read more

This review is on customer service. I haven't really purchase many meat items from this store. The only thing I really purchased is the dino bones (for dogs) and spices. The store is very clean and the employees are nice and friendly. I especially have to give mention to the butcher, Ritchie. Ritchie is extremely nice and friendly. He definitely tries to please the customer. I have smaller dogs and he cuts up the dino bones just right for my dogs. I do agree that the prices for the meats is high. But I do recommend trying the dino bones. (If you have dogs) read more

I have been coming here for a long time and before that my parents shopped here when they wanted quality meat. I mainly buy steaks here but their smoked porkchops are not to be missed. They custom cut them off a very big chop to any thickness you want. First class meat shop. People tell me to check out Rob's, but this is close to home and I am happy with them. read more

This butcher shop is one of the best I've ever shopped at! Their chicken is so fresh and delicious, the way chicken should taste. I was raised with fresh natural chicken and this is it! The meat is also outstanding! I have to drive a way to get to them but it's worth it!! I won't buy my meat, chicken or seafood anywhere else. Staff is outstanding so friendly and helpful! This place is great! First of all, I love Boar's Head deli meat and cheese. Howard's is one of the few places in NWI that carries it, and I pretty much will not eat a sandwich unless it has Boar's Head deli meat. All of the meat, poultry, and seafood is also very fresh and reasonable. We cook at home a lot and grill and use the smoker a ton in the summer. Howard's has always had the cut of meat that we needed even when it was a somewhat odd request. Prices and service are great...what more can you ask for! read more

I'm sorry folks but this place is seriously in need of an update and better refrigeration...upon walking in there a horrible stench hits your nose...smells like dog food...the only reason why i continue into the place is because i was with my husband and if i passed out i knew he would take me out of there quickly. ..although the people there were friendly the meats and other products just didn't look appealing at all..wont be back...not even to ask for directions if i was lost read more

WELL Philippe's Catering at Howard & Son's just catered my friends wedding. Drinks and appetizers were suppose o be served at 2:00pm and tables dressed.. they did not show up till 2:30 with appetizer' no plasticware or table ware. Dinner was suppose to served after the wedding at 3:30pm. They did not show up till 4:45 with the pig. and Tableware and table cloths. The pig was still really raw and had to have it put in the oven for hour.The photographer took picks of the bloody pig. dinner was served at 5:30pm after half the guest have left. I overhead that the catering cost $1,200. They would have been better off going to Gordon Foods and doing it themselves. The pig was tuff. I just hope no one gets sick tonight. The BEST Beef Jerky I have ever had!! Try the Jalapeno Beef Jerky! The steaks are great and they usually have half-priced steaks in the freezer by the jerky that are from the day before but still fresh and delicious! They have fresh Tamales every Saturday and they are phenomenal! read more

Great place to find a fresh cut of beef. They are always nice to there customers. I am on the email list and I have a Howards card. They fill me in on the weekly deals. For some reason I tend to go in there more in the Summer months. Love them Howie Dogs. read more
