I have a new favorite donut at, Mister Donut. It's the Blueberry Cake. I love Blueberries, but would have never thought to try this donut. That was until, Ian Frobe the STL food critic sang its praises in a review. The next day after reading the article, I went to experience it for myself. Wow, the donut was moist, soft and cake had a flecks of Blueberries and the flavor was strong, but not overpowering. I immediately feel in love. Now, I change my order up. I'll have some donut holes, then I'll enjoy a Chocolate Long John and the next visit is the Blueberry Cake. The sign above the entry door says, World's Best Coffee. I don't know if I'd go that far to say it's the world's best, but for Donut Shop/Diner coffee it is spot on. I like that they let me bring in my Yeti and they'll fill it up to-go. Save those paper cups. The staff is super friendly. It's a hon and babe, type place, but they still keep it professional. This is more than just a donut shop - there is actually a lot of history to Mister Donut! Mister Donut has a long and complicated history but in short, there were at one time 550 locations in the United States - now, this is the only MD store still in operation in the country. However, there are over 3,000 MD's worldwide, mostly in Japan. Speaking of which, this place gets its share of tourists from Japan. So, as far as the food - of course, the donuts rocked. Took home a half-dozen. I also had their biscuits and gravy, which was awesome. Would like to try a breakfast sandwich in the future. The decor is retro for a reason, so no knocking it! haha. I read about this Mister Donut on Atlas Obscura as the last location and wanted to check it out as I was driving back to Chicago from St. Louis. It was a bit out of my way, but I love getting to experience classic eats like this and was happy to get some donuts in the process. I got there not too long before closing, and was happy to see they still had a good selection available. The donuts were very affordable too: I paid just over $3 for my two selections. There were a handful of patrons there enjoying their donuts, most of which were a post-church crowd. I was greeted by a young woman at the counter who got my two donuts, and another man came from the back and greeted me (maybe the owner or manager?). It was St. Patrick's Day and he gave me a ribbing about where my green was (I was wearing green flannel, I had it covered). He knew a lot of the other patrons and was chatting amiably with them. This is the last mister donut in the US! Because I'm from Japan and love mister donut in Japan, I made a pilgrimage to this location. The donut was very different from the ones in Japan (I didn't expect that anyway so it's ok), but the donut was super tasty! Moreover, what I really loved was the atmosphere and super friendly staff and the local customers! We just started to randomly talk to people around us and it was so much fun! I will definitely come back again and buy their mug!!! I think they have merchandise with "Godfrey, IL" as a focus, but I think they can have more variety! I'm not sure if it would be their intention, but I think people from Asia will love to visit this location not because this is the last mister donut in the US, but nobody knows mister donut started in the US! The Last one Standing! Literally! This place works like well oiled machine: the donuts and pastries are always fresh, so much so that they can run out of product QUICKLY. They also offer short order of biscuits and gravy, and the breakfast sandwiches. The service is quick, accurate, and friendly, but they get right to business (because it is always busy). Been eating donuts from here for 40 years. They have some of the best in the business. My favorite is the cherry old fashion. There are plenty of new shops in the city with all the new trends in donuts. The old recipes seem to still be going strong. They have a good staff and regulars. Thats a sign of a good establishment. When you see many of the same faces time and time again. If this spot had a drivethru and a updated coffee program it would be one of the hotest spots in Alton. I thought I hadn't reviewed, so here's a little extra. Oh, the reward of donuts for sitting through church, what a terrible thing. Just down the street, across from Hardee's, hours of my life taken, but donuts given. I won't go into how I won't subject my child to that. The "Mr. Donut", the franchise owner, lived down the street from my childhood home, that's a fun fact to hold onto. He never brought donuts by that I can remember, but we moved away when I was 10. Back in the early 80's, Mister Donut was a huge chain, much like Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme. However, Dunkin' Donuts bought out Mister Donut and all of the US locations were converted or closed, I guess with the exception of this one location about 45 minutes North of St. Louis. We had one in San Antonio when we first moved there and I used to ride my bike to it. So, when I heard about this place, I've been itching to get over there. And I am glad I was finally able to do so. The key I guess is to get there early. They open at 4am. I wanted some Dutch Crumb, but they were already sold out, about 8:15, when I got there. I got a half-dozen to go. They were all good and fresh. And it's a popular place, because it was pouring rain and the people were lined up. Now the only thing that was meh, was the coffee. It wasn't anything special. I did get a travel mug, because I wanted something with the logo on it. I'm glad I went out of my way to go there. For a few minutes, I felt like an eight year old boy. It was nice to take this trip down memory lane. I saw Steven B. post recently about Mister Donut in Godfrey, IL. I knew I HAD to see it. If you know me you know pop-culture and kitsch are my thing and also I'm fond of Asia and Tokyo has 100s of Mister Donut on every corner and in every subway station. I work in IL so this was out of my way but not terribly out of my way and it's always appreciated when I bring donuts to work! I must say Mister Donut really delivered the 1970s/1980s dose of kitsch I was hoping for. The yellow and orange interior is a blast from another dimension and you can't help but love that little Mister Donut logo punctuated by the sweet fresh baked smell that hits you right when you walk in. There were a couple of people in front of me so I took it all in while I waited in line. Almost every seat in the place was occupied with about 20 blue hairs. I guess the Silent Generation (people born before 1945) appreciates good donuts! The donuts looked delicious but I could tell immediately they weren't the donuts you get in Asia. The donuts in Asia are much lighter and much less sweet. I picked up a dozen to take to work. I asked the lady at the counter if they were always this busy and she said "Yes, absolutely!" We dug in as soon as I got to work. I ate the Cherry Old Fashioned. It was amazing. Fresh and sweet and pieces of maraschino cherries in the batter. The old fashioned is pretty much like a regular donut that's glazed... and it's VERY sweet. Oh mister donuts you have not changed a bit since the last time I've had you...20 years ago. These are not the best donuts I've ever had but the taste of these donuts bring back childhood memories. I personally enjoyed their donut holes more than any of the other donuts. There was not much of a selection around noon. Most were sold out. We never stopped in - although honestly not sure why as we are a family who loves donuts but my husband finally ran in today and bought a few. He didn't get the door closed to the car before he opened the box to grab his, thankfully he looked before just putting the donut in his mouth because there were several ants on his donut. I asked why he didn't go right back in and complain, he said it wasn't worth it because the reception he got from everyone inside was less than welcoming. Love this place. I always have a fun time listening to the good old boys complain about taxes, the roads, the kids, and whatever else they believe is wrong in the world. I think it's kind of funny they have wi-fi -- I'm not sure how often that would get used -- but I appreciate that they have it. The food isn't anything super special, but it's not bad, and I enjoy having the biscuits and gravy and many cups of coffee. If you like their unique curvy coffee mugs with the sweet vintage mustachioed baker logo (which I do), know that they're on sale. I live in New York and drink from my Mister Donut mug all the time. No telling how long this kind of operation will keep going given that Altonians go to mom and pop places less and chain restaurants more, but I intend to keep going each time I visit my hometown. I am a regular at Mr. Donut. Hands down the BEST donuts around. We probably go here at least 2 times a week and sometimes on the weekend as well. Atmosphere is nice, like an old town donut shop and very clean. When you work with the public you should smile and say good morning-- the customer should not have to say the first words or just have to start saying what they want with no greeting. Heading to St. Louis I realized we would be passing not to far from Mister Donut, the only one left in America, so I made sure to plan on swinging by. Stopped in around 2 in the afternoon on a weekday, some donuts were getting low, but still had plenty. Growing up in Alton I always assumed that Mister Donut was a one-of-a-kind local store. They have great donuts. It was only until a vacation to Thailand last year that I discovered that Mister Donut is actually an international chain with several locations in Bangkok. It's very strange that the only remaining US location is in Godfrey, IL, but there are thousands of them in Asia. Hopefully this location keeps surviving. read more

When I found out that the last remaining Mister Donut in the United States just so happened to be in the area my husband was from, I knew for sure we were going there.
