Dishoom was one of my favorite meals in Edinburgh. We started with the bun maska and masala chai…read morecombo, along with the chili chicken. The bun maska was perfectly drenched in butter, and the chai was hot and comforting. The chili chicken was also really flavorful with the perfect spice level. For our mains, we got the Ruby Chicken and House Black Dal with garlic naan, chili paratha, and a side of plain rice. The Ruby Chicken had a delicious tomato gravy, and the chicken pieces were really soft. The dal was thick and creamy. Everything paired together so well. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself was beautiful, with a Bombay-inspired atmosphere. There's seating both upstairs and downstairs, and while we didn't have any issues, I've heard there can be long wait times. Our server was friendly, although the service felt a little sloppy at times. They also surprised us with complimentary champagne since we were celebrating a special occasion, which was really nice. I found the portions to be a little smaller, and it's definitely on the pricier side, but I think it's worth the splurge. If you're visiting the UK, I'd definitely recommend checking out Dishoom!

And the service is attentive. It's a beautiful thing to witness, even better to experience. My Negroni order was sent to the bar while my server and I chatted about what I might like. So efficient. I ended up ordering a couple of small plates. A spicy lamb dish and a hot/cold combo of yogurt and mashed hot veggies. Rather quickly my drink was served and a short while later my food appeared. Those small plates were not so small! Loads of food for one, perfect starters for two. Finished with a house chai - delicious!

Near the foot of Leith Walk, this is a fantastic cafe serving great (and cheap) Punjabi food. Open…read morefor breakfast and lunch, the dishes on the menu consist of simply, homely food such as dal and chapatis or chicken curry and rice, but here simple really equals delicious as the women who work here are all amazing cooks. The décor is very plain, with white walls and paper tablecloths, but somehow it works, and the cafe feels very light and airy. Set up as a social enterprise by a Sikh women's collective, it's comforting to know that, by enjoying tasty curry, you are also supporting a very worthwhile community initiative. This place has a refreshingly different (and dare I say it, more authentic) atmosphere from a typical Indian, and is definitely somewhere you should check out.

I'd walked past Punjabi Junction many times when wandering down Leith and been meaning to try it…read more It's commendable for being a social enterprise helping provide skills and opportunities for women. It's a nice little venue, bright and with a relaxed cafe/diner feel. It feels like stepping into someones kitchen and being served some wonderful home-cooked food. I had a chicken curry wrap and my friend went for the fish curry. Both were great; cheap, authentic, satisfying comfort food. It was a nice size for lunch and so we had enough room for dessert. I'd *definitely* have the gulab jamun with mango ice cream again. Service was maybe a little bit too relaxed and so wouldn't have been great if we were in a rush but given the homely feel I didn't mind too much. I will happily come back to try some more of their offerings.
