DO BETTER!! The WORST EXPERIENCE I've encountered at a doctor's office (you can check my other posts on yelp which I have left mostly 5 star reviews for the several reviews I have submitted). 1. Had another patient and I waiting for over an hour (when no one else was there) bc the front desk somehow did not have our names on their list (which we checked in and provided our id/insurance info) and only inquired about our wait time bc someone then came in and seen quickly. Dr Essig was very apologetic about the wait and informative, but staff should have been more aware especially when you have 3-4 people at the front desk. 2. Wrong location for prescribed meds - which I had to email about location provided from their paperwork that I listed bc doctor sent it to a place that he's associated with and I had to email my location again for pick up convenience). 3. After he told me he would call me to give me the results I did not hear anything for two weeks and called. I scheduled a phone conference to discuss results (and cancelled work that time) and upon calling office at time of meeting bc didn't get a call- Rep said that the Dr wasn't available. Did not receive a call back or call from office to reschedule. 3. Prescription sent out was incorrect - whereas, a second prescription was sent out a week later with the correct dosage after taking the incorrect amount for a week - no call from doctor about the discrepancy. Upon seeing another doctor for a second opinion, I was informed of this error in medication - the following week I received a notification from CVS of a new prescription from Dr Essig to pick up with the correct dosage (after taking the wrong dosage for a week). 4. Took over a month for medical records to be sent out (after three calls and 2 emails to the office). Wait time was over a month to "verify who I am/date of birth" (which is given to them from showing your license/insurance card infobefore seeing the doctor) - so not sure what they needed to verify). Medical request was Dec 7th - received documents 1/27 after 3 calls and 2 emails to see an update. I requested results bc his result from the ultrasound was different from an MRI received - which was a DIFFERENT DIAGNOSIS! 5. Additional bills - I had to repeatedly email another company (medstarsprs.com) that billed me for my office visit (bill stated - "Office visit - New PT - Level 3", plus urine tests) and was charged $250 with a balance of $15; however I paid my copay at the office before seeing the doctor. Ridiculous!! CHECK YOUR BILL!! So be aware of "NEW PT" costs that they try to add on. I had to email back and forth with the office and this company at least 3 times to get this settled to zero balance bc they kept on sending me receipts after dispute was settled. GET IT TOGETHER AND ORGANIZED. read more

I echo the other reviews, he is a great doctor. I came for a checkup and he offered a lot of relevant information as well. He answer emails promptly as well with any follow up questions. Been seeing Dr. Essig for 3 years now and it's an absolute pleasure each time. Which is certainly saying a lot considering OBGYN appointments are generally the complete opposite of such. He takes the time to really listen and his bedside manner is fantastic. The entire staff is very sweet and makes you feel comfortable for the duration of your visit. I've been to many other OBGYN around the city, and their offices have a sterile, and cold atmosphere. Dr. Essig couldn't be any more opposite from that. I absolutely recommend him! read more

Literally the best experience I've ever had with a doctor. I went to Dr. Essig after finding him on Yelp. I hate any and all doctors but had to put my big girl pants on and go for my annual exams. His office is pretty small and looks a bit outdated but from the check-in process, to the nurse checking my vitals to my exam with the doctor I was at ease the whole time. He has incredible bedside manner, works efficiently and is so personable. He was also great with getting me the right prescriptions I needed and assured me he was a call away if I needed anything. Dr. Essig is my first male gynecologist; he was recommended to me to a friend. He is patient, genuinely interested in his patients' concerns and thoughtful. I'd planned on just seeing him once and then finding a female doctor, but it was actually his attentive attitude and willingness to hear me that convinced me not to see anyone else. I've since recommended him to friends and co-workers and we have all had the same experience. He seems to genuinely care about his patients. The woman below who left a scathing (rather presumptuous) review is neither a doctor nor a lawyer so perhaps she is unaware of how much doctors have to protect themselves in the US. This is something I am intimately aware of. On another note, a close friend of mine did have an IUD put in after finding a doctor who was willing to do it and also said it was one of the worst experiences of her life. let's face it: going to the gynecologist isn't the most pleasant of experiences. but you've gotta do it (you do if you're female, anyway), and you should at least see a doctor who's going to make you as comfortable as possible. dr essig does that. he's super nice and very approachable so it's easy to ask him for whatever you need, and he'll have you in & outta there in no time. i'd definitely recommend him if you're looking for an ob/gyn in the area. my only complaint is that they only take copays in cash, for some reason. it's weird and it's annoying that i have to make sure i've been to the atm, but it's not the end of the world. read more

I've spent a lot of time seeing doctors in my lifetime, and Dr. Essig is one of the most attentive and reassuring doctors I have ever seen. He took over a half-hour going over my complicated medical history and my current needs. He has a wonderful bedside manner and offers his take on things. Some people may not appreciate it, but I feel that doctors don't often offer that perspective. I can look up review after review online, but I really appreciated his recommendations based on what most of his patients liked or experienced. I've been going to Dr. Essig for over 6 years now. I would easily say he is one of the best doctors I've come across. Yes, you will end up waiting upwards of 1/2 hour for him at times, but that's because he gives his attention to his patients and doesn't rush them out the door. Dr. Essig is a wonderful doctor, but his staff are very incompetent and really don't know what their doing. I got charged for procedures that were Never done! Between the office and my insurance company for over 4 months now, I'm still waiting for them to send the correct claim. Unreal!! No one needs to go through this! On top of that, I got billed again from them. I just don't trust this office and their schemish acts. It's horrible that I have to keep calling to see if their on top of things. This message is really to E. B. in Brooklyn, who gave a scathing review of Dr. Mitchell Essig. First, I am curious as to whether you ever did get that IUD inserted, and what your experience was like. Second, I do find it inappropriate that you write such a scathing review of a Board Certified doctor with over 30 years of experience, given you had one meeting with him where he actually did you a very big favor. You are not a doctor, and you do not know more than he does about this procedure. A few years back, I was in a similar situation. I had to be taken off of the pill because of a genetic blood clotting issue I found out about. I wanted to be on a good form of birth control, without resorting to the dreaded condom as I was in a monogamous relationship with the man who is now my husband. I spoke with a doctor at Concorde Medical Group and she agreed to give me an IUD. She warned me of some possible cramping, but told me to take some aleve and that I'd be able to go back to work. Note - I have never been pregnant. I'd also like to indicate that I have an extremely high tolerance for pain (I just had shoulder surgery and experienced very little pain, both when I injured myself and in the recovery post-surgery / physical therapy phase. I also get bad monthly cramps (the only thing that works is 1-2 aleve PLUS 2 motrin.) Getting the IUD inserted was single handedly the worst experience of my life. I couldn't leave the doctors office as I couldn't get off the toilet, unable to shake the feeling of passing out or the pain in my abdomen. My husband (bf at the time) had to cancel his birthday dinner and left work early to take care of me, because once I got home I wasn't even able to get myself food or a glass of water. That is how much pain I was in. This pain lasted 24 hours, and then subsided, but I felt crampy for several days. To make things worse, for weeks I was unable to enjoy sex with my boyfriend because I felt violated 'down there' and didn't want to be touched. It made me fear getting pregnant one day and delivering because I knew I couldn't bear that pain again for any reason. As soon as it sort of stopped bothering me, it started bothering my boyfriend, and I had to go for ultrasounds, and of course, my body was rejecting the IUD. At this point, I spent $2000 for the IUD to be inserted (paragard), and spent who knows how much on the Ultrasound, and then had to spend $500 to get it removed, 1.5 months later. Since then, I have moved and seen 3 new OB/GYN doctors, including Dr. Essig (who came highly recommended by my physical therapist, who is excellent too). All of these doctors said "I would never put an IUD in someone who has never been pregnant." One of them continued and said "If the patient really wanted it, I would do it as a surgical procedure in a hospital with anesthesia." So please don't post a scathing remark on a doctor who is not only a very seemingly nice, genuine, straight up and patient man, but also a doctor that saved you from a lot of difficulty and pain. If a doctor doesn't want to perform a procedure, that is his/her prerogative, and that is undeserving of a publicly read and relied upon remark, which only shows impatience, immaturity and a misunderstanding not only of the medical field but of people in general. I visited w/Dr. Essig yesterday to discuss my options going forward as my husband and I begin thinking about a family. He never once pushed a product, he offered advice and understanding, and answered all of my questions openly and honestly. I would certainly recommend him to anyone, however, he no longer practices Obstetrics (fyi), which is unfortunate because I would feel very comfortable if he were my OB. SCAM ARTIST I have never written a review for anyone good/bad before but I had such a horrible experience with this Dr. that i thought everyone should beware! No one wants to feel taken advantage of especially by their gyno! I went to see Dr. Essig for my annual check up last year. I had to wait an hour before being seen by the Dr. because he was eating his lunch! My long wait got me acquainted with the disgusting & dirty waiting room that had a fish tank filled with green water and under the chairs are boxes filled with patient files! Overall, the the rest of my appointment was fairly average- until i got the bill. As Dr. Essig is an in network Dr. my normal annual check up is $0 but with Dr. Essig i received a bill for $1,700!!!!!!! He ran a multitude of unwarranted, and unnecessary tests to claim more money from me and my insurance company! His staff is rude and incompetent - they submitted wrong codes, paper work and information to my insurance company over 4 times!!!! I have been working with my insurance company to get some of these charges revoked but now on CHRISTMAS a year later i just received another bill for $400. THANKS DR. Just want to say thank you to Dr. Essig & staff specially chava.. dr essig is such a kind, professional, caring n easy to talk to man. He would always answer my question which I had a lot, I would text him all the time n he would respond back even when he was on vacation which I felt guilty of doing that. The dr is very knowledgeable and he works with you. Chava was amazing every time I called she knew who I was, answer my question helped me out with sending my paper work to the insurance fast, was there super early when I needed blood work cuz I had to rush to make it to work on time. A lovely man. He listened to every single one of my concerns and spent a lot of time with me. We had a consult in his office before going in the exam room so he could get to know me first and was interested in learning about my whole medical history, not just my related history. He's up to date on current practices and theories, and was very honest with the ones he thought I should avoid. At the end of my visit, when I told him how much I enjoyed meeting him and how taken care of I felt, he shrugged and said "I'm a man in a woman's field. Dr. Essig is genial man and takes the time to explain his procedures in great detail. He is thorough with his work while he is in the room, but like others have said, is quick to leave once he's done. I went to Dr. Essig for three months, but dealt with his head nurse most of the time. She speaks very fast (which makes her come off as being impatient), uses medical terminology like I know what she's talking about, and gave me conflicting instructions (TWICE!) than what Dr. Essig provided me. I went in for blood work once (which doesn't require me to see the doctor) and I told her that the medication Dr. Essig prescribed was giving me some terrible side effects. She just said "uh huh" and continued what she was doing. So I repeated my concerns. Nope, nothing...she didn't think it was necessary to talk to Dr. Essig. Wait time is usually minimal in the mornings, but can get up to an hour during lunch time. Dr. Essig has two office locations, so going to the other location can be inconvenient. read more

Very friendly, very knowledgeable (I think 30+ years of experience?) Respectful of patient values/helps you get what you need. VERY quick with the physical exam, then talks to you with your clothes on like you're human, which is great. Doesnt do the rectal part if your under 40, which is a plus. Although I'm only 25 I have numerous lady-type medical problems, he is EXTREMELY knowledgeable and up-to-date, all about doing what is best for the patient, not doing the most invasive procedure. Great bedside manner. Only reason I didnt give him 5 stars is because he is a little quick to leave the room, but if you come with a list of questions ahead of time and ask him to go through them with you, he will. I have to tell you that dealing with insurance companies is not always easy or pleasant but sometimes you have to fight for what you need. Or you can have a person like CHAVA at Dr Essig's office do it for you.She never gives up. she makes things happen. It's been a very long time since I saw Dr Essig. At the time, he was still in practice with another doctor, and they had an office in Nassau County. I had a lot of difficulty maintaining my pregnancies. The doctors were so great with me, and I know that they were trying to help me as much as possible. In 1991, Dr Essig delivered my wonderful son, and in 1993 he delivered my beautiful little girl. I left NY in 1994 and though obviously much time has passed and my kids are now in their early 20's, Dr Essig remains one of my favorite doctors ever. read more

I was referred to Dr. Essig by my GP, whom I adore. Yesterday, I was set to get my IUD inserted. I bought the thing out of pocket since insurance wouldn't cover it, did lots of research, talked to my two friends who had IUDs inserted recently (both are single women without children) about it, and was rarin' to go. Unfortunately, Dr. Essig is a sexist who doesn't trust his patients choices. I get to the Dr's office and was in good spirits, excited that I was going to be able to have sex with my husband again soon. I go in to the office, and Dr. Essig has barely introduced himself when he heaves a sigh, sits down, and starts mumbling that he doesn't know how to tell me this/where to begin. He then starts telling me how up until 10 years ago they wouldn't give non-married child-free (my word) people IUD's at all b/c of infection risks. (Aside: the reason this is not the case anymore is b/c medical science discovered ages ago that the risks are no different if you have or haven't had a child). Staying positive, I tell him that, well, I am married, and I have been on birth control for nearly 10 years, so I'm not concerned about changing my mind. He then goes in to a spiel about how some young 25 y.o. girl came in for one once, and how that just breaks his heart b/c she's a peer of his son, age wise, and that it's just so sad. Sensing the sexism, I tried to shut him down, still nicely and positively, trying to give him the hint to just put the thing in me already. I tell him the reason I am getting an IUD, and Paragard specifically, is b/c I have a family history of heart conditions, and that raised a red flag to my doctor (his peer, so you'd think he'd respect her referral), and she suggested Paragard b/c it is hormone free. This still wasn't enough for him, tho. He then starts in with scare tactics, telling me how I'm going to be bleeding a lot more and longer, how cramping is so bad, etc. But he's really trying to sell me on not getting this IUD. At this point I'm getting irritated, b/c everything he is telling me, I know. So I tell him, that yes, I took 4 Ibuprofen before I got to the office in prep for the pain, and have a large jar of it in my purse. He tries to keep telling me about the pain and I interrupt him and say how 2 of my girlfriends got IUDs in the last 5 months, one of which got the Paragard, and I know all about the cramping and bleeding, I have done my research both online and through my friends and doctor, and I know what I'm getting in to. Finally he begrudging starts to put on his gloves to give me an exam before inserting the IUD, and takes another heaving sigh and mumbles something like, "Well, I guess if you decide you want to have a baby you can always get it out". Then he starts my exam, and while he's trying to figure out which way my uterus tilts, I'm getting pretty irritated. On one hand, I'm already here, I've taken the time off work, I purchased the IUD, found time in my schedule (I have two jobs) to make an appointment, I should just go through with it. But then I come to my senses and I stop him. I tell him that he has been really unprofessional, and that I am not comfortable having him do this procedure on me. I tell him that no doctor should make a patient feel the way he made me feel, and that if he was actually concerned for me as a patient, he would have asked me a few questions about myself and why I was getting the IUD before trying to convince me to have babies. I tell him he clearly doesn't respect me or my choices. He comes back with some lame excuse that spurs me on more, to which I reiterate that if that was genuinely his concern as a medical professional, he would have asked me questions instead of assuming I was doing this on a whim and that I didn't know what I was getting in to. At this point he finally got around to admitting that "well, if anything goes wrong it's always the doctors fault so I have to protect myself legally." At this point I gave him a really hard "Are you kidding me?" look and said, "Excuse me, but my father was a lawyer. I understand what precautions need to be taken in order to protect yourself legally, but again, if that was actually your concern, you could have found out more about me, the patient, before assuming I was looking to sue you. I am perplexed at why my doctor referred me to you, and I am going to advise her not to refer any other patients to you in the future. I will be getting my IUD inserted by another doctor." He never once apologized, but just looked at me almost with satisfaction that he "won" and I wasn't getting an IUD. My doctor has since apologized for his behavior and it looking for a female OBGYN to insert my IUD. read more

For this implant I had to pay out of pocket so that I could have it done within a tight time frame for me. However, it has now been over FIVE MONTHS since I had the implant put in and because their office has failed to communicate with my insurance several times, I'm still waiting on reimbursement for this expensive implant. I do not trust them to take care of their office work, and I do not trust Dr. Essig. If you go to him, be absolutely sure that all your insurance claims are taken care of. read more

My first experience was waiting for an hour, which in my opinion is worth it when the doctor is taking his time to listen to patients. All reviews says he does. I don't know if it was because I am 25 (young) he wasn't as attentive as people rave him to be. He kept cutting me off when asking me questions in his office and then once in the exam room he did an exam, followed by wisking me in another room to do blood work. I was somewhat rushed out of the office I felt. The second time was even more strange. The head nurse rushed me into a room, asked questions but apparently didnt relay them to the doctor. Once he came into the room, he was puzzled as to why I was even there. He examined me and wrote a script and said I will see you in 2 months. Then the head nurse questioned my next appointment and wanting to know why I was going to be taking another med (in the lobby). I was embarrassed, one patient was just leaving, another was walking into a room and the other nurses were behind me, it was so rude, I was so uncomfortable. Also, something that was EXTREMELY obvious was the dynamic of the office. There is Dr Essig, and the head nurse- these two argue with each other in front of patients. Then the head nurse has a (I'm in charge of everything attitude), this seems strange because there are 3-4 other nurses in the office, it is ridiculous for her to be taking payment, making appointments, putting people in rooms, and relaying messages to the doctor. This is a horrible dynamic because the other women have to kind of stand around and stay out of the way of this main nurse. One girl mans the phones, and she tries to schedule appointments when the head nurse isn't hogging that too. Its so obvious the dysfunction is this head nurse, I can tell she stresses out the other nurses and the poor doctor. Then the next day I received a call from the girl who handles the phones, she wanted to inform me the insurance doesn't include infertility treatments. I told her that's fine I'm not there for infertility, I'm there for PCOS. Clearly the head nurse relayed info she shouldn't have. I would hate to go to another doctor just to get private treatment but this woman is really too much and I have 2 months to decide if the doctors effective treatment is worth dealing with that woman. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Essig for 10 years and I used to think the world of him until I started to undergo IUI and IVF. I think it's very appropriate to write an accurate review of a doctor and post your opinion based on experience. You don't have to be a doctor to know that something is wrong. There is so much information nowadays available that patients have every right to educate themselves and ask questions. Just because a doctor is Board Certified does not mean that they are excellent. Doctors must keep up with the trends, research, and protocols. Dr. Essig has taken on way too many patients and cannot provide adequate service. It's obvious that he is not as thorough as he used to be. Everything is done sloppy and his head nurse is horrible. This is coming from me and several of my co-workers/friends that have been a patients of his. I know at least 10 people that left him and gone elsewhere and had successful IUI's and IVF procedures. His office is quick to bill you and ask you for cash up front. They make so many mistakes with billing, you need to comb through it. They also milk the insurance. I was mortified when I brought my records to my new RE and saw how she writes her notes and documents everything. My IVF experience this time around is TOTALLY different. I couldn't even get an appointment for a post op and his head nurse said oh maybe you have endometriosis. So unprofessional! After two IVF's now they think I have endometriosis? How does this make sense? Wasted two years of my time trying to conceive. Dr. Essig had the nerve to tell me that I should look into donor eggs when I told him from the very beginning that is not what I want to do nor is it an option. I was missing so many lab records that I can't even count the first two IVF's I did with him because they were done poorly. If you are looking to do IUI or IVF DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR. Do your research and go with the best. Even gyn services I would question and think there are better doctors. There you go, that's my post!!!
