I am deathly afraid of haircuts. I have very fine, very long blonde hair. Before yesterday, I hadn't had a snip in over three years. My mother essentially forced me to go because she has convinced herself that my phobia is tied to a deeper commitment issue. She's probably right, but that's beside the point. Anyway, I walked in and felt like I was going to puke everywhere. I ate one of the complimentary cookies, gazed at all the tasteful art on the walls and sat in one of the comfortable chairs, all of which made me feel marginally better, but failed to eliminate my anxiety about the trim. Amber called me back to get a shampoo and a protein treatment -- something my fried ends certainly needed. She had gentle hands and talked to me about my life, then, once she was done, I walked over to James and plopped down in his swivel chair, feeling hopeless and alone and coming to terms with the fact that I'd soon be saying goodbye to an inch or two. He asked me what I wanted, and I literally had no idea. All I knew was that I wanted to do as little to the length as possible. To relax me, he began asking me about my work. I am a financial journalist, so of course I spiraled off into a long-winded diatribe about the European debt crisis. I talked and talked, he cut. To ease my nerves, he humored me and joked with me and was laidback and easy-going. By the time I finished my rant about the Greek elections, he was done trimming. "That's it?" I asked. "That's it," he replied. He asked if I felt better, and I realized that I did. He put some leave-in conditioner in my hair and I let it air-dry. He kept the length, but it undoubtedly looks healthier, bouncier, fluffier, lighter. My ends can no longer be likened to burnt hay, and I don't think I'll ever go three years without a hair cut again. read more

I have been coming to this salon for the past several years, actually, even before the move to The Boulevard across from the Galleria where it is now located. I have never had a better haircut and style than at the Mitchell Jams Salon. My stylist is James Mitchell who is the owner of the salon. He does a fine job of cutting and adding color to shorter hair like mine. I have a standing appointment at this salon. The receptionist always calls two days in advance to remind me; I appreciate that. Another thing I want to say about James Mitchell and others who are employed there, the business is certainly community minded. I can't tell you how many organizations, including health related and child advocacy and animal rights groups, that been financially helped by events and benefits and fund raisers sponsored by Jams Mitchell Salon. James Mitchell is quite generous himself, always willing to give his time, money and effort to community service organizations. I think it is worthwhile to add that James and his partner, Mike, are amazing animal rescuers, especially dogs. They are at the forefront of animal rescue, having rescued, obtained medical attention and care and actively found homes for literally hundreds of animals. read more

I met Jams at his jewelry store Schon, which is across from his salon, Mitchell James salon. My friend and I just randomly went into the store after eating at PF Changs one day. He has wonderful jewelry and other items that are fabulous. Jams spent so much time with us helping select jewelry that fit our lifestyles and taste. That's when he told me what he would do with my hair and I decided to give him a chance. He does an amazing job with my color. He is very creative and thinks outside of the box. He has great ideas on how to do my color that works best. He is so fun and energetic. He is always on time and he is fast! The other staff are also very nice, helpful and professional. He also sponsors a monthly happy hour at Schon to raise money for local charities and artists. You can eat, drink wine, and shop all at the same time. I love Mitchell James Salon. This place is clean, stylish, and professional but that would mean nothing without the talented people working there! I have been getting my hair done by Cate McDonald for about a year and I absolutely love her! She does a fantastic job with my hair and is always fun and flexible with me (I am a last minute planner!). The overall health of my hair has gotten so much better since Cate started working on it and keeping it fantastic whenever I need it! Michelle (running a blank on her last name!) is who I go to for color after a couple friends recommended her and I could not thank them enough! I am a little color shy and Michelle did the most amazing job giving me highlights and lowlights to give me what I wanted without overdoing it. In a word: Superior. Over the years I've referred gal pal after gal pal to Mitchell James; all of whom have remained loyal customers. Most recently, James and his crew took on a wedding party of 10 that I was working with...not a negative peep from a single one of them ! Every once in a while I plop down in James' chair myself for a cut and color and to catch up. There's not an ounce of pretense when you walk in the door, this is no spa...it's a salon so be ready to dish some gossip and have a good time... I highly recommend Mitchell James Salon. I have been a patron here for years and have never been disappointed. I paticularly like the fact that you get what you ask for. I'm a true redhead, but getting a little bit grey. (Did I say that?) James is a perfectionist with his coloring skills. It's amazing how well he matched my true color. I also love the fact that the stylists keep up with the latest trends in cuts and styles. James does a razor cut on my bangs and layers and I get many compliments on my cut.The salon offers many other services, I have enjoyed great facials and neck and shoulder massages. I have been getting my hair done by Mary Harber for 17+ years, and followed her when she started at Mitchell James Salon-- maybe around 15 years now (?), at two locations. I love Mary. She is VERY skilled at her job, a lot of experience and expertise. I have challenging hair, and she is the only one I trust with my hair. I look forward to going to Mitchell James Salon, it is a clean, trendy, open atmosphere. I have never had an issue in all these years and that's a testament to how the place is run. After 25 years I finally want to put into writing my love for this salon! James is a magician with curls. I straightened and damaged my curly hair my whole life until James convinced me to just "let it be"! Once I followed his advice my life changed- I stopped getting up at the crack of dawn to wash dry and flat iron my hair- now I can get up and be out the door in a flash! If I do ever want to wear it straight I have to wait until my husband is out of town- he hates it if I even tease about straightening . I was referred to, Mitchell James Salon by a family meme er that sees James. Finally after looking for a new salon after 5 years I found my place! James is so sweet and great in dealing with indecisive people like me. Ha! The salon is always clean and there is plenty of parking around the plaza he is in so no worries about finding parking. I'm so glad I finally found a place that does an amazing job that also includes a friendly staff. James does a wonderful job. He always takes time to figure out what I want, and I always leave with a smile on my face. He did a phenomenal job with my perm/body wave! He knew exactly how to blend the different size rods to make it look natural. I get so many compliments and couldn't be happier with the cut/style. I went to see Jill Lebsack to get my hair colored and cut, it was the best hair salon experience I have ever had! Jill did an amazing job on my hair and thrilled with the blond natural look. This salon is beautiful and the service is terrific! James and the other stylists are all trained in the latest cutting edge styles, methods and treatments. James listens to his clients and knows how to color and cut hair in a way that is most flattering and also respects his clients' wishes. She is always very patient never rushing, ofcourse she is like that with everyone so I may have to wait a few minutes for my appointment. Mitchell James salon is one of the most classy and cohesive salons I have ever been to. All of the stylists are VERY personable and approachable. In fact, I had my hair washed and blown out by Ashley the past 2 times. I now know her, but the first time she did my hair she was a stranger to me; a stranger would have thought that we knew each other for years!!
