I used to work in an old fashioned candy shop (yes it was the best job ever and I could eat all the sweets I wanted) and these songs were played on rotation. It drove me nuts. Anyway, Sugar Candy Mountain, bang on the centre of the affluent suburb of Milngavie, sells all the old fashioned sweets from your childhood in the original jars stacked on shelves around the shop. I agree with the previous reviewers points that the new trend for retro shops has resulted in some overstyled twee places. However, I really don't think Sugar Candy Mountain falls into that same irritating bracket. When I visited yesterday, schoolchildren were gathered round the sweets asking the prices excitedly and an elderly woman was sitting at the counter, enjoying a cup of tea with the owner. It appeared to be a meeting place for the community, not just kitsch place for faux bohemians to spend £2 on half a bar of macaroon (a similar west end establishment springs to mind here). And that's can't be a bad thing can it?

My boyfriend and I popped in here before meeting up with friends on Easter sunday to see if anything was different about this shop. It's basically the same as all the other American candy stores. Overstocked, over priced and I walked out without buying anything because like I told my boyfriend- there's nothing I miss that much from the states that would bring me to pay as much as they ask for in these shops. (Especially when shops like Poundland and TK Maxx have started stocking a few American goodies!) My family is visiting this summer, so I'll ask them to bring a few of my favourites with them. Situated at the Greenock end of the beautiful Esplanade on the Clyde, this little cafe has been tempting locals for years now. Whether your driving by and fancy grabbing a tub of ice cream for home, or having a relaxing walk along the esplanade which would be all the better if it were accompied with a 99, this cafe should be your first stop. They sell their raspberry sause (which is the best I've ever had) by the bottle, and its only a QUID! Ace! They also have some of thee best ice cream this side of Italy with the Vanilla ice cream with Tablet being my favorite. They also do one with puff candy in it for you visiting yanks coming off of the cruise ships! If your passing through the inverclyde area its definitely worth a trip to this quaint little cafe for some of the best homemade, traditional italian ice cream you can buy.
