This place puts all the over priced cutesy sweetie shops in Glasgow to shame , hang thy head in…read moreshame t'other places, bow and behold the true king/queen of the Glasgow sweetie shops. With the same garish exterior that most of these places have, the sweetie shop has much more in substance than any of its competitors i have ventured, pocket money in hand into. With a whole wall and i mean a whole wall, devoted to jars of loose sweets, this place is a total dream. There is enough sugar in this shop to sweeten an ocean. In addition to the loose sweets there is also the usual assortment of ice cream, choc bars, crisps and the like. A place that is well worth the visit, just don't tell your dentist!!

Better priced than the establishments of this kind in the city centre and with just the same selection, you will leave with an ice cream in one paw, a mix-up of candy crayons and strawberries in the other and chocolate smeared over your face. It will make you feel like a kid who, well, had just been inside a candy shop. And how can that be a bad thing? It is ADHD enducing, but an altogether enjoyable experience. After all, it's tedious to forever be watching those E-numbers.

There are many ice cream shops offering ice cream for far less. As well as ice cream they offer fudge and tablet. No pricing is displayed for the tablet but they do suggest that comparing the cost of this tablet with any other tablet is unfair as this is a high quality tablet, so I would not be surprised if the price when you reach the toll is also a massive shock. I will be avoiding the fudge shop on future visits.

Everywhere you look there is something different- apart from the eye-popping selection of fudge from banoffee to strawberries and cream- there are home made ice creams, an admirable selection of handmade chocolates, "thanks for looking after my cat/dog" boxes of sweets, seasonal gifts and humorously packaged little gifts. I love this shop and highly recommend a visit. It's on of those shops you go in intending not to spend anything and just have a nosey and end up buying lots of goodies because they're too good to miss! Set alongside loads of other quirky and well sticker tourist shops it's so worth seeing for yourself. The customer service is great too. It's cash only but there's a bank machine right next door which makes it even easier to avail yourself of your cash!

Ok maybe i'm being a little negative and am probably a little guilty of tarring this place with the same kitsch by numbers brush, but hey ho that's the way it is. Sugar Candy Mountain is however a nice wee place. In addition to the glorious walls of jars filled with sugary treats, they also do a rather fine hot chocolate (fair trade coffee is also on offer) with everything priced as we have come to expect form these places. I used to work in an old fashioned candy shop (yes it was the best job ever and I could eat all the sweets I wanted) and these songs were played on rotation. It drove me nuts. Anyway, Sugar Candy Mountain, bang on the centre of the affluent suburb of Milngavie, sells all the old fashioned sweets from your childhood in the original jars stacked on shelves around the shop. I agree with the previous reviewers points that the new trend for retro shops has resulted in some overstyled twee places. However, I really don't think Sugar Candy Mountain falls into that same irritating bracket. When I visited yesterday, schoolchildren were gathered round the sweets asking the prices excitedly and an elderly woman was sitting at the counter, enjoying a cup of tea with the owner. It appeared to be a meeting place for the community, not just kitsch place for faux bohemians to spend £2 on half a bar of macaroon (a similar west end establishment springs to mind here). And that's can't be a bad thing can it?
