After noticing someone with takeout Asian food, and being around lunchtime, appetites were lit so we hit Google to see what was in the area. And up popped Mizu Japanese Restaurant, only a few minutes walk from where we were...so we went. And we're so glad we did. We both ordered the Salmon Sashimi Bento Boxes ($22 each) which came with Miso Soup. The boxes were filled with a beautiful array of unique items and the salmon fresh and delicious. We loved it, and now Mizu is on our lunch list of driving to dining destinations. We are hungry to explore more of their mouth-watering menu!

It's the sort of place where the new parents going out to lunch are feeding the baby some quinoa-based baby food on the side. My interest in it is that where Japanese is generally vegetarian-unfriendly, MIZU offers a nice menu with a variety of well-marked options. Their signature vegetarian dish, agedashi tofu, was pleasant enough but didn't quite live up to my expectations. It was a distinctive combination of sweet and salty, but basically a tapas-size portion, not nearly substantial enough for the price. My tea confirmed that toasted rice in tea does indeed taste good, but I might have been better off ordering more food instead. Don't get me wrong, I could imagine going back and being full if I was willing to spend a lot, and they have some appealing things I'd like to try, but setting aside the novelty (for me) of Japanese, there are plenty of places where I know I could do better.

It's my favourite sushi haunt and it definitely helps that it's on the same street as my work building. With unique plates filled with buttery fish and a wide variety of cooked options including karaage, gyoza and dumplings there's something to please everyone. Service has been exceptional each time I eat here with water glasses being refilled regularly and helpful staff at every turn. It can be slightly more expensive than your bog-standard suburban train, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and comfortable surrounds.

They have simplified their 'plate pricing' by only have 2 types of plates on the menu - all plates with coloured rings around the edges are $4.50, the patterned plates / premium items are $8.00. Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. Takeaway can be made to order. Great spot for lunch, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Just make sure you get in early to beat the lunch crowds! Takeaway and catering also available.
