Most years, Five Stone has been successful in getting the appraised value of my home lowered - sometimes by a lot. I think the fee they charge for this is reasonable, and they seem to be efficient and very easy to deal with. Usually, we exchange only 1 or 2 messages per year. They donate a substantial portion of their profit (about a third) to local charities, and they invite their clients to choose from a list. They're a great business; highlky recommend.

They did zero work, literally zero, as soon as we signed up they literally told us to go find comparable property sales ourselves and sent a bill at the same time because they wouldn't do any work to try and protest for us thus they knew we would not find any savings. The entire reason we used them was to find the comparable and do the protest, which they didn't do either of. They should at least have a policy that if they have zero data they can use to make a case, you should not pay anything to them at all since they won't do anything. I would not use them again, I have contacted state representatives to suggest regulating this industry due to unethical companies like this one.

Fast Forward to a couple of weeks ago. I was so happy with my first H and R Block experience that I visited again...... bad move. The thing that I didn't realize is my taxes are a little more complicated from a year ago. I am filing jointly with my wife, I moved to another state, I have a 401K, a HSA, etc. With each complicated task, you get charged more money. I left H and R block with a 400 dollar bill! The crooked thing is that they don't tell you your total till after you are done completing your filling. After sitting there for 2 hours I didn't have the patience left to say "Never mind, I'll go somewhere else".I left angry that some of my wonderful tax return would have to go back to H and R Block. Especially considering I don't have any idea what the heck they did. I watched the guy hit the buttons..... it looked like something I could have done from home! Next year its all about Turbo Tax. If you are single, then H and R Block is great, but if you have difficult taxes I would consider finding another alternative.

I don't even remember how i came across E D Johnson and his tax services but I called him and we set up a meeting. Once we sat down and he reviewed my W2's, what i was pulling in as income/giving the IRS in tax money every year and the fact that i was married to a woman who was dependent on me because she didn't work, he was borderline offended by my previous returns. He immediately took on my case - for a very reasonable fee i might add - and told me he'd make it right. He wasn't kidding. When we got our tax refund we called him and told him there must be a mistake or something. He had more than tripled the refund i got one year prior! And mine is a relatively simple case. I can't even imagine what he could do for people with higher incomes/kids/home businesses, etc. It watching a magician pull a rabbit out of a hat. This past year was a rough one for me...wife doesn't work and I lost my job and pulled in like half of what I usually get in regular income. After going over all the specifics of my layoff, and the fact that I had to plunder my 401k just to put food on the table I was expecting to actually owe money to the IRS. But nope, E D calls me back and says the IRS actually owes me 30% more than last year! I don't even have the words to express how grateful I am. But I did create a new nickname for E D, he's "The Magician". Never again will I trust the idiots at turbo tax again. I cannot recommend this guy enough.
