Wing Chun Academy is just awesome! I always wanted to practice Kong Fu but never got to it. At the…read moreage of 31 I decided to finally go for it. Obviously I was nervous as I had no prior experience. I was invited to participate in a free class - and ever since I'm hooked. I try to practice at least 5 hours a week - and the results are amazing. I could barely touch my toes when I started, and now I can do almost a full split! Bare in mind that don't have an 8 year old flexibility. The team is really friendly and informal. Instructors are very skillful, knowledgeable and patient. Operating hours are really good (morning, lunch, afternoon and evenings) so you can always find the best time to practice. All levels work together so you always practice with someone that is more experience then you - but you work only on your skill level. If you are looking to get into shape, learn self-defense, and get a huge boost in confidence you should try Wing Chun Academy. There's lots of parents that bring their kids with them and there's kids classes as well (ages 4-5). One more important thing, in Wing Chun Academy you practice in a non-full-contact method. What it means is that you are not getting punched or kicked for real. First thing you learn is how to stop your punch or kick an inch from your opponent face or body. The idea is to use your opponent force against them (and stay safe during practice). There are punching begs and other methods to simulate full contact. I think that this method is more advantageous as it teaches you to control your strength, speed and accuracy. And a real combat situation, all you need to do is take an extra inch forward to get your opponent. To conclude, I've been practicing Wing Chun for about 8 months now and I love it. I feel stronger, faster and in control, and I am much more flexible. I also feel very confidant and IF I will even be in trouble I could protect myself bare hands. Last word, how cool it is to practice Bruce Lee's martial art???

It's all practiced together and self reinforcing. So they teach the sword principles in their empty hand martial arts and the other way around. When people say that Aikido is based on sword, here that is clearly true and demonstrated. The skill and knowledge of the instructor and senior students is very high.

Classes sporadic and would rather join somewhere it is a little more consistent. Didn't like the place, not a real business location, just a community centre space they rent for the class. Seems like a part time venture rather a regular martial school. No fly by night for me. I would think any semi-successful school (it sounds like they've had it for at least 6 or 7 yrs) would have a regular space dedicated to their school only rather than a community centre after this amount of time. I'm not entirely surprised though as this guy is truly weird. Don't know how to put it into words but not just a nerdish weird, but more like someone who is passive aggressive strange that he wants you to desperately like him like a friend. I can see that he would not be very nice if things don't go his way. Update Oct 17/15 http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/paramedic-with-ptsd-loses-job-may-lose-house-after-licence-dispute-1.3261892 That explains his crazy weird behaviour dealing with mental illness but it's even scarier to think he has this ability and can snap at anytime. Anyone with mental illness should not have access to weapons of any kind, but being a martial arts expert is dangerous in my mind as you can't take it away from him. I just hope we don't read about him snapping and people getting hurt. It may be in poor taste to say, but I have to be honest this guy creeped me out and I think he is the powder keg waiting to go off. I hope we never have to read in the paper about him losing it

Here are my reasons: (1) absolutely no customer service as it relates to your policies. You have access to an email that goes to who knows where and no one really knows whats going on; (2) in connection with item #1, they adopt and enforce absolutely ridiculous policies. I was a member of the Vancouver branch and wanted to transfer to the Calgary branch. I was told this was impossible. Instead, my options were to "upgrade" my membership at double the monthly rate or cancel my Vancouver membership, re-enroll with Calgary and pay the initial joining fee again; (3) there's no water fountain. This one is actually extremely bizarre. How can it even be legal to permit people to work out in an environment where dehydration can only be mitigated by waiting for some guy to finish his business in the washroom so that you can desperately access to sink taps? I know its a "no frills" gym but, Fit 4 Less, is a water fountain really a "frill"? At this point, your members may even settle for a garden hose attached in the alley. Don't sign up with this gym. I realize the price point "appears" worth it, but trust, there are better ones out there with similar or the same prices. (World Gym in Calgary for one).
