An out-of-state gas station near an interstate highway would seem an odd destination for a motorcycle ride, but it wasn't so much about the destination as it was about the journey. Last month, my wife drove here to pick up her sister and nephew, who live in West Virginia, so they could spend a long weekend at our house in Rhode Island. They caught a ride with someone traveling to Boston, and this was the rendezvous point. Anyway, my wife used a GPS to drive from our house to this gas station, and wanted to re-create the ride on my motorcycle, because she said the GPS took her on nearly all back roads, with beautiful scenery. Now, I don't use a GPS on my motorcycle. I use a map to plan my ride in advance. The problem, as I told my wife, was "I don't know which way the GPS took you." She only remembered bits and pieces of the route, so I planned the route as best I could. (She later admitted she probably took a wrong turn and the GPS re-directed her through some alternate roads.) While we couldn't re-create her original route exactly, we did enjoy last Sunday's ride under perfect weather, and reached our destination - an old-school Mobil gas station (it still has the cupola), located on a wooded road that runs parallel to Interstate 84, with nearby on and off ramps to the highway. Given its location, a lot of RVs (both towed campers and motor homes) stop here. The parking lot is huge, with several gas pumps in the front, and diesel pumps in the back. There's woods and a small grassy area behind the gas station, but the ground seemed a bit swampy. There are men's and women's bathrooms, but the bathrooms see nearly as much traffic as the interstate, and are pretty rough. I went to use the bathroom first as my wife had a cigarette outside. Just as I went to use the men's room, an employee slapped an "Out of Order" sign on the women's bathroom (because they ran out of toilet paper, I thought I overheard them say), which didn't make the wife too happy. The convenience store has a fair selection of snacks and drinks, but the younger female and older male employees on duty during our Sunday afternoon visit made a strange duo. She seemed majorly inconvenienced having to put the "Out of Order" sign on the bathroom door; and, as customers were at the register, he was discussing how kids in daycare spread bacteria by touching feces ... I shit you not.
