Simply the best! I reached out to YES career coaching…read morebecause I was feeling stuck and ready for a change in my work. My resume was OK, but I wanted to put my best foot forward. The team did a fantastic job on rewriting my resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. I ended up applying to a handful of jobs and got an interview immediately. What ended up happening though is that during the resume rewriting process, I developed this newfound confidence in my work that I never had before and I was going to go after what I wanted to do. I started to network with people that I knew in my area at different companies and ended up with an opportunity that was a perfect fit for me. Since I was a referral, the management team was not too focused on my resume but I ended up getting the job! I am thrilled to start this next chapter of my career and I have to thank YES career coaching for guiding me to see the light I had inside of me so that I can show up and be the best version of myself. Highly recommend!!

My 30 min consultation with Katherine was really helpful! I learned formatting tips and ways to beef up my resume by adding a header, summary, and core competencies and creating sectional dividers. She recommended outcome-based bullet points that highlight the benefits and quantify the results rather than a laundry list of tasks. Katherine was friendly and thorough and even had enough time to quickly proofread my hubby's resume. It was really nice to get an extra set of eyes! While the $299 starter package seems a bit pricey, it's a good deal considering that you are equipped with the A team of an interviewer, drafter, and editor. They will rewrite your resume and can fine tune and belt out those bullet points. While my resume could use a few tweaks, the starter package is a great option if you're looking for a resume overhaul without doing all the guess work. I found the resume consultation surprisingly useful. Would highly recommend it and consider the packages!

WORST EXPERIENCE AND TERRIBLE RESUME....STAY AWAY!…read more I hired Paul Maraschiello, owner and employee of Associated Resume Writers, to write an entry level resume for me. After speaking with many people and companies, I decided on Paul because he had 10 years of social service experience, the field I am entering, as well as 20+ years of experience in resume writing. The first meeting went fine and although I didn't care for his personality a whole lot, I needed someone experienced to write a great resume. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Right before he sent me the resume, I spoke with him briefly to provide a few pieces of information. I had to clarify multiple times that foster home and group home are not interchangeable terms. For someone with experience in this field, I found that a bit unnerving. Also, there were other pieces of information I told him I didn't want in the resume and he didn't listen and included those anyway. I had many conversations with him following this, mostly through email but a few conversations over the phone, and he was incredibly insulting towards me. He blamed the resume being pathetic on my lack of experience rather than his lack of effort. There were misspellings, grammatical and formatting errors. He didn't even spell my address right, which I spelled out for him. Beyond the technical errors, he didn't seem to have a grasp of my field which is part of the reason I hired him. In one conversation, he even told me that I may need to go and work with "retarded people" to gain further experience. Unbelievably offensive! He became incredibly rude and even hung up on two of our phone conversations. Apparently he didn't enjoy me telling him that I was contacting the BBB about his business, his complete lack of professionalism, and his inability to provide a satisfactory service. Hopefully this review will help someone from making the same mistake I did. Although I cannot speak on behalf of the other services he provides, I can say that I would steer clear of this man. I found that he doesn't handle criticism well when it comes to his work. Unfortunately, that's the risk of owning your own business and taking money from people to provide a service. These are my experiences with him so I can't speak for others but I would never choose to work with someone so rude and insulting ever again. One last point, he threatened to take me to court for filing with the BBB and posting any reviews. Both of which I have the right to do under consumer laws....trust me, I checked before doing anything. He also threatened to turn my name into his social services contacts to warn them about me. Professional? I think not!

I found out this morning that the Society for Technical Communication (STC) has filed for…read morebankruptcy. As of today, the STC headquarters in Fairfax, VA has permanently closed its doors. All activities have ceased. I am saddened by this decision. STC has been instrumental in my professional career as a technical writer and communicator. I joined in 2004. I was a part of the Manitoba chapter. There were a multitude of STC chapters around the world. When I moved back to the greater Toronto area, my chapter was STC Toronto, which happened to be the largest chapter outside of the United States. STC published a journal and magazine that members had access to. I remember reading the magazine that came in the mail. There was an ad for the Master of Science degree at Mercer University. Targeted at technical communicators who were in the workforce, you could get a graduate degree in Technical Communication Management. I kept this ad in mind. I enrolled in the program in late 2007. I became a graduate student in January 2008. I graduated just over two years later in August 2010. I learned so much from this degree. Usability. Project management. Proposal writing. Instructional and information design. Multimedia. Web presence and accessibility. Content management and development. The list goes on and on. In one course, we worked with STC to establish the Technical Communication Body of Knowledge (TCBOK). It's a source for content in the technical communication field. I was fortunate to have contributed to it. The TCBOK is still accessible as I write this review. I attended a number of STC summits: - Minneapolis (2007) - Philadelphia (2008) - Atlanta (2009) - Dallas (2010) - Anaheim (2016) All summits were paid for my employer at the time. Last year, the summit was in Bloomington, MN. I asked my manager if I could go. My employer (specifically, my manager's manager) did not approve to fund it. I realize that times are tough. It kills me that I wasn't able to go. It never crossed my mind that it would be the last STC summit ever. Summits were great to network with other technical communicators -- to learn about cutting-edge trends with the best in the profession. I always learned so much and was inspired to take what I had learned and apply it to what I do at work. I will miss attending STC Toronto events. I remember attending my first one just north of Broadview station. It was great meeting folks from our chapter, learning about various topics, and having lunch. STC Toronto used to have a monthly gathering at The Pickle Barrel at Yorkdale Shopping Centre. It's so sad that these events are no more. I have good memories to cherish. STC was established in 1953. As the oldest professional society for technical communicators, it's even more painful to see such an established organization cease operations for good. I am thankful for its existence. I will miss it dearly. (37)
