I reached out to Jessa at Mod Physique when I was around a year postpartum. My body had not bounced back from pregnancy in the way that I had hoped and a year after giving birth via c-section I felt like I still looked 3-4 months pregnant. Carrying my ever-growing child had become painful in my abdomen and I overall felt like pregnancy had wiped out my strength and confidence in my body. My efforts to remedy the situation myself had proved fruitless. My initial consultation with Jessa was enlightening -- she saw and understood so many things about my body and its condition that I would never have figured out on my own. Over about six months and 8-10 sessions (mostly via Zoom), Jessa crafted and incrementally enhanced an exercise routine to build back my core strength, straighten my curved spine, and resolve my mommy pooch. After a few months, the results became obvious and encouraging. I have not historically been an "exercise person" and approaching a personal trainer felt intimidating. I appreciate that Jessa met me where my knowledge and skill level was at, took the time to explain the exercises and their purpose, and adjusted the program to accommodate the amount of time I had to realistically spend on exercise during my busy days as a working parent of a toddler. Edit and Update! I've now been going to Mod Physique on a regular basis, as in four times a week, for several months now. Jessa has added both a stretching class as well as a 'Mod 45' class which has less cardio for people who may not be quite ready for the challenges of her regular hour-long Mod Physique class. As Jessa's been teaching more and there are more regular students, she's expanding into even more challenging sets that focus on inner and outer thigh work, glutes, hip flexors, and... burpees. :) My abs have never been this strong, and I can definitely tell that I don't jiggle much at all when I go running on my non-Mod Physique days. Jessa is supportive, insightful, really knows her stuff and is there to assist and correct so that everyone is using their best form during the workouts. Come give this amazing combination a try!! Easy location to park nearby; new facility, super-helpful and supportive staff. The workout is an intense hybrid of cardio, Pilates-style core work, weights, strength/lengthening and in a vaguely circuit-training style... all on cushy mats in bare feet so you have fabulous control. Mod Mama classes for pre and postnatal are AMAZING. I'm 14 weeks into my pregnancy with my wedding just around the corner and wanted to find a prenatal exercise class that felt like a REAL WORKOUT -- one that could get me feeling fit and toned. I LOVE MOD PHYSIQUE! I joined the studio when I first moved to Portland and have been going 2-4 times/week for the past 2 years. I feel so strong and confident because of the killer workouts. Jessa is a very knowledgable instructor; she is very mindful of posture & form to ensure that her students are maximizing their workouts and are doing so safely to prevent injuries. I also love the Mod Physique community; it is a cozy group where everyone is welcoming and friendly. I also did a number of private 30-minute cardio sessions with Jessa in preparation for my wedding... these were incredible! The scheduled classes are amazing and effective, but if you need an extra butt-kicker to take things into high-gear to achieve your fitness/wellness goals, these private sessions will do just that. Jessa tailors the workouts to your abilities and is always encouraging you to take things to the next level. I did one session/week for a month, then bumped it up to 2 sessions/week for a month. She tracked how many reps I was doing & how much weight I was using during each workout and by the end of all of our sessions the results were quantifiable but also apparent on my body! Jessa is such a wonderfully dynamic and attentive leader. This workout makes you sweat and feel the burn. The marriage of cardio, weight training, and combo moves helps me feel a full body workout in just an hour. Ive been to the studio about eight times and have never done the same workout twice. Jessa does an exemplary job giving everyone feedback on body positioning for maximum safety and burn potential. I may be so bold to say this is the perfect workout. I highly recommend Mod Mama for pre and postnatal fitness classes. I regret that I hadn't discovered it earlier in my pregnancy because it is a very challenging and energetic workout that isn't watered down like most prenatal workout videos I had tried. Jessa and Kerry are both amazing instructors and I would recommend the class to any expecting (or postpartum) mother. They pay very close attention and tailor each workout to suit the clients needs. I am addicted to the classes at Mod Physique. I look forward to going and hate when I can't. I feel and see a real difference with my body since becoming an active and dedicated member. The barre is something I have never done and even thou it's difficult I am enjoying it so much. I am using muscles I never thought I had. Jessa is such a creative teacher and I am amazed at all the different exercises she comes up with. She is so knowledgeable and i feel like I am getting an education on the proper way to do Pilates. I have taken numerous pilates classes at other studios and never felt like I was getting much from them. I feel like I am finally getting the benefits from pilates. After trying nearly every fitness, pilates and yoga studio in the NE, I was so glad to come across Mod Physique and find exactly what I was looking for - a friendly, fun and challenging studio with no pretense or intimidation. My husband and I have been seeing Jessa for functional movement training for 3 months and just signed up for more. We are not the fittest people and found ourselves staring down middle age with poor posture and movement habits and a collection of aches and pains. Luckily, we stumbled on Mod Physique and decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed the instructor and the class size was great. I did the Mod Physique class. It was a good workout. Not the best I have had but a really good one. I am training for a half marathon right now so this is a wonderful workout to do on my break days. And it is in a really accessible location. I was visiting Portland for a two week vacation and saw the 4-class deal on living social. So glad that I decided to try out the classes!!! Jessa, the instructor, was excellent---gave clear instructions, was tough but gave solid modifications when needed, friendly, prepared interesting routines, picked good music---I could go on! I'm back in NYC now but if I ever move back to Portland, I would definitely take her classes. If you live there and want to have fun AND be toned and healthy, take her classes! The best fusion workout in the city! I've taken numerous barre-based workout classes in Portland and elsewhere in the PacNW, and this is hands-down the best one: individual attention with a warm but firm focus on form, and true High Intensity Interval Cardio mixed in with the effective barre, weights, pilates, and yoga derived exercises. Three + months of consistent attendance have shown visible changes in my body - arm and abdominal toning! that I never thought possible! - but MOD has brought even more than that... I'm aware of my posture and breath in new ways, I'm dedicated to continue attending as Jessa keeps each week and workout fresh and new, and I am finally getting the cardio that was desperately missing in other barre workouts in Portland. Cardio is what burns the calories, after all! This is the best fusion workout in the city, and a true physical challenge. Come try it. It has nearly the intensity of a cross fit class (but with a vital focus on form and safety that xfit is often lacking), and you'll set your own goals and limits, with Jessa's grace and humor gently pushing you along - it's all made me a believer in MOD! read more

I was able to deliver my baby in just 8 contractions! The medical staff were astounded by my ability to push very effectively and were even more impressed because I had been given an epidural. I'm not saying this will happen for every woman who goes to the Mod Mama pre/postnatal classes at Mod Physique, but I personally owe it all to the core and pelvic floor work that I did and the instruction on connecting with those muscles from their Mod Mama classes. I knew what muscles to engage when it came time to push and had developed a deep connection with them, I believe that made a huge difference in my birth experience. Now that I'm postnatal I am really appreciating the pelvic floor strengthening and recovery work provided by instructors that are trained in the needs of pre & postnatal women. If you're looking for an amazing and fun full body workout - look no further! Mod Physique is seriously the best. I have tried it all over the last 8ish years. Yoga, Barre, OTF, Pilates, and this is by far my favorite class Ive ever taken! I love that it combines cardio, weights, barre and pilates. Each class is slightly different and I NEVER find myself wondering, "when is this over?". In fact, I don't want the class to end sometimes! I've never looked forward to a workout class as much as I do with MOD. I love that Jessa (the owner) is extremely knowledgeable about the body, something that is very important to me. I want to get in shape and FEEL GOOD - to move through the world with ease and do things BETTER, and I feel thats what Mod is about. I have been a runner, swimmer, hiker, and martial artist for years. I've always been super active, but a year and a half ago, I developed sciatica. It was extraordinarily painful. I quickly went from working out three or four times a week to feeling comfort only when I was lying on the couch with a heating pad. Pure misery. I saw a chiropractor and an acupuncturist who together relieved the immediate symptoms, but who also told me that I needed to truly strengthen the small muscles in my hips and low back or I was going to continue to struggle with sciatica. I have been going to Mod Physique for about six months, and I'm incredibly satisfied with the workouts. The workouts change every week, and they are an excellent combination of strength work, cardio, ab work, and exercises that challenge muscles you never thought you had. And, that is the most important part of my review here. I saw my chiropractor a few months ago, and she said, "Keep doing whatever it is you've been doing, because your hips have gotten so strong." As someone who loathes 'indoor' exercise, I am a convert! I'm starting out with Mod 45 & am happier with the experience than any other 'gym' class I've ever attended for these reasons, to name a few: *The classes are small & personalized. Jessa keeps her eye on every person, gently helping you adjust whatever is needed. She is very professional and knows how to address specific individual issues *The facility is bright and extremely well organized. *The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and welcoming. *Jessa and her husband, Greggory, who participates in class, have a great sense of humor throughout. This class has reinvigorated my workout. I just love it here. I was at a gym for over 10 years and just couldn't give it up because each time I tried a new work out or studio, I just wasn't challenged enough to make the change. Well, I tried Mod Physique and have now been going for over 6 months. I love this work out! It is a great welcoming, knowledgeable environment. The routine and music change weekly so it is always fun and hits on a new body part. Jessa's gentle correction to form and posture help me so much to build and lengthen my muscles. The cardio bursts keep my heart rate up throughout the session. I just cannot say enough about this workout. It is really a fusion of all the great parts of single style studios. Mod Physique it the perfect mix of pilates, barre and cardio. Classes are fast-paced, challenging and include tons of creative exercises. They are also a great bargain, and include options to buy class packages if you don't have time to take advantage of the unlimited monthly. The owner/main instructor, Jessa, is fun and likes to focus on technique/proper form. She keeps class sizes small (max 8 people per class) which allows for lots of individual attention. This has been immensely helpful to me since I have mild scoliosis and was experiencing daily back pain. After attending just a few Mod classes, my back pain went away due to Jessa's focus on developing core strength and proper posture. I'm the type of person who tends to burn out quickly from workout routines, but I have been going to Mod Physique for six months now and still look forward to attending class each week. read more
