This place is such a hole in the wall and the fact that it's a hostel might deter some from visiting the coffee shop, but don't skip this place! What a wonderful find! I've passed by this place a dozen times not knowing it was not only a hostel, but a coffee shop! Aaron, my barista was friendly and quick to serve. He made recommendations and treated me like I was a guest! They have a few pastries, including gluten free donuts from Farm Fresh Fast. Coffee, espresso and tea for the win! Okay--this is now my most favorite youth hostel. It's very contemporary, pristine, uncluttered, incredibly reasonable, very comfortable bunk beds set up in some unusual arrangements. Large shared bathrooms (1 person) with wonderful rainshower and enough extra bathrooms that if one is being used, there are others. There's a wonderful outdoor patio. Breakfast is mostly coffee, bagels and fruit available if you want but they have eggs if you want to cook them yourself and a very well stocked kitchen. There's plenty of parking. If you need something the staff is very helpful. It's about 1.5 miles to downtown. There is a Greenlink bus that runs to and from downtown but I never saw it. Downtown also has a free trolley but only Th-Sun. The staff didn't know much about downtown, transportation, etc and had no maps. Maps are readily available downtown so I brought a bunch back for other visitors. The common areas are very well organized and clean but dorm rooms don't get cleaned daily so trash really piles up in the tiny trash baskets. But those two issues are minor to me. I stayed extra days in Greenville mostly because the hostel was so appealing and comfortable. read more

BEWARE: Take Modal's cancellation policy that follows very seriously: "Due to COVID-19, cancellations will not be refunded in full for any extenuating circumstances for the remainder of 2021." Clearly, this applies to 2022 as well given my reservation was for 6.17.22-6.19.22. (Note: Direct reservation with Modal.) I called to notify Modal staff on 6.16.22 that my friend just tested positive for COVID--(I actually initially called 6.15.22 @8PM- no answer.)-- & was met with zero understanding, just the strict no refund cancellation policy. I literally posed the question: "So, essentially, we are bringing COVID to Modal for lack of other options?" Receptionist response: "Yeah." I always maintain my humor- even in the worst of times- so please allow me to indulge you straight from Modal's website as to what they offer guests: Glimpse of Southern hospitality: A glimpse of Southern hospitality would've been great! I would've even settled for good (not great) customer service over the phone. (At least pretend you care my friend has come down with COVID in his travels & pretend you care about exposing guests at Modal. At least PRETEND.) Grab coffee or craft beer from our common area bar: WITH a touch of COVID. No extra charge. Relaxing in the company of locals & other guests: WITH KNOWN COVID. Our proverbial door is always open: To known COVID positive guests to boot! Step in & enjoy the Modal experience: Residential kitchen with known COVID positive person milling about. That's the experience everyone is looking for! We can't wait to share community: Community + known positive COVID person- sign me up! Visit often: Odd way of showing that you want guests to feel welcome & actually want to RETURN. After paying $300 for bad customer service & not even using the room--- I'm pretty solid, thanks! To be totally transparent: Guests this past wkend were not exposed to my COVID positive friend despite Modal's NO REFUND cancellation policy & poor customer service. My good friend happened to be out of town & opened his home to us last minute so that we wouldn't be exposing guests to COVID. For others who aren't as lucky as I am to have a good friend in the area who happens to be out of town & willing to open their home? Well, I think we all know the answer when travelers are left with no other options. Modal: Do better. A couple suggestions, if I may. 1. Try to resell the room & at least offer a refund in the event you succeed at reselling. 2. At minimum, teach your staff how to deliver good customer service. 3. Work toward a more friendly cancellation policy in the pandemic era that would encourage good COVID etiquette vs putting other travelers at risk due to your policy's shortcomings. read more

Surprisingly a breath of fresh air amid Greenville's constantly changing "trendy" spots. Makayla makes an amazing fig and maple coffee that truly sets the Fall tone without what's become the expected Pumpkin or Apple flavors of Fall. I had it iced and it was perfect while visiting the downstairs common areas enjoying the featured artist - would actually love this drink year round as a substitute for Chai. Current artist work featured is mixed media from Maggie MacDonald whose pieces can truly take you to places reminiscent of sandy beaches or beautiful natural gardens that the great Frederick Law Olmsted would have created and strolled. Beside each art piece, the artist has included beautifully written poetry. Immaculately clean with very kind staff. Looking forward to returning soon! read more

Modal was the hands down the nicest hostel Ive ever stayed in! My partner and I stayed in a 4 person dorm with two friends. Everything was clean, updated, and stylish. We had our own bathroom with a rainforest shower, and they supplied shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, towels, and vanity kits. The beds were ridiculously comfortable, and each had a curtain for privacy and to keep out light. The hostel had a lovely kitchen, common area, and deck. There was breakfast in the morning, snacks and drinks available for purchase, and a cute coffee shop on site. Great location (we walked to dinner) and easy parking. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The walls were full of art. The vibe was immaculate. read more

My partner and I did a group buyout of Modal for our wedding and we couldn't have been happier. It was the perfect place to provide accommodations for 20 of our out-of-town guests. They loved the fun vibes and took advantage of everything Modal had to offer. In the mornings they would gather in the kitchen and enjoy a coffee from the coffee bar; in the evenings they would grab a beer from one of the three taps offering local craft beers and then head to the outdoor patio to hang out and enjoy the drinks. And because our buyout lasted 5-days, everyone was very excited that laundry service was an option. Our guests were also pleased with the location. Even without a car our guests were able to explore all of downtown Greenville. Working with the staff and the owner (Joe) was a breeze. My partner and I were supported before, during, and after our buyout. We really can't recommend Modal enough. Stayed there two nights in "the shower room" and absolutely loved it. Check-in was super easy, the entire property is beautifully decorated and very chill, staff is legitimately friendly, and so it isn't surprising that this hostel is considered to be one of the most welcoming and inclusive in the world. The room was really cool and super clean, and that shower is just amazing. I also really liked the amazing (and giant) community kitchen where you can cook while you stay there if you want. Breakfasts are also super good. As a bonus, the coffee shop serves some of the best lattes in the entire state. Solid wifi, lots of places to work or chill, a friendly and safe atmosphere, parking in the back, super convenient location... I can't recommend Modal enough. It should absolutely be in your top 3 options whenever visiting Greenville, SC. read more

We froze with no heat all night because the heat was off and no one is on the premise to turn the heat on! When we complained the next day we were told we should have notified them but it was late an we assumed no one would be up. Kind of feel having the heat on while it is in the 30's is a no brainer?! I have never stayed in a nicer place. I seriously want to move here permanently! The price is wonderfully low, and if you're not staying in a private room there's still a good deal of privacy from the cubby-like bunks. At Modal you're not sacrificing comfort for price as the beds are incredibly luxurious and all common areas are simultaneously chic and homey. Security is also no issue, as every door (except bathrooms) automatically lock and only open with a keycard. Even the cubbies designed for personal items are keycard operated. The bathrooms securely lock with adorable vacant/occupied locks. I plan on making a trip from my home in FL to SC purely so I can stay here again. A part of me doesn't want to post this because I don't want to share this hidden gem. read more

Joe was incredibly accommodating, the kitchen was amazing, the rooms (we rented one for Talent holding) were AWESOME, he was even flexible with a last minute request to shoot in the Sunroom area. Modal is a rare gem in the bedrock of hostels. Sparkling clean, stylish, and filled with light, love, and hospitality. Delicious breakfast. My partner, Joe, and I were in Greenville for the day and lost our keys. After back tracking our steps, we found them, but realized the day was getting late and we were tired. The drive home felt unlikely, so I searched for hotels, inns, and hostels in the area. Hotels were expensive, inns were full, but Modal immediately answered the phone and assured us two beds in the bunk room would be waiting. When we arrived, Joe at Modal greeted us warmly, showed us around the hostel, and made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. Pluses: Art space, design, welcoming to travelers, and Queer space.
