Stayed at SweetPeas visiting from Atlanta over the weekend. I loved everything about this place. Staff was super kind, friendly and incredibly smart. Another guest and I got a whole history lesson on the architecture around Asheville. Great conversation!! It's in a fantastic location since there is so much to explore within walking distance. The hostel is extremely clean and well managed. My pod was cozy and very comfortable. I loved all the exposed brick and hardwoods. Everyone I spoke to that was staying there were very nice and doing their own thing. Family style kitchen and living space was inviting and lovely with loft style ceilings. It's also reasonably priced for staying right downtown. Honestly, I was very impressed with this place. Would absolutely stay here again. As a matter of fact, I'm really looking forward to another visit. Safety - Coming and going was great. They really care about safety and don't allow outsiders to come in. Only the people staying there have access to the place and you get a key for your cabinet to safely store your items. Walkability - Literally anything and everything is in walking distance. Food/Drinks - There are plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. Coffee shop two doors down, burger place with bar next to that. Brewery on the back side of the building with trading post across the street. Diner was around the corner as well as a dessert bar. I was a huge fan of everything SweetPeas had to offer on the block. Atmosphere - This place had such a cozy feel. It was warm and inviting with a lot of historic notes. Everything about this place was adorable. There's plenty to read, a guitar to play, and a ton of other stuff to do if you just feel like chilling.

A little haven in downtown Asheville! Perfect location, really awesome staff and a clean spacious living space to meet people from around the world. They offer an array of updated amenities (shower, bathroom, tv, laundry, fridge, dishwasher, etc.). Beds are comfortable, with black out curtains for shade and privacy. I will definitely be back!

Sweetest people, has that true home feeling. I felt safe and loved there. BIG warning though, they say the fridge is free use and to just label your food..... don't expect a lot of room, I put one bottle in there and had to do some maneuvering. They have people that work and live there so they probably take up most space with their own grocery's. It's not that big of a deal when being in downtown Asheville and having amazing restaurants a skip away :)

Pros: cheap place to stay that is centrally located and has nice decor. Cons: Weird layout, very loud, stuffy private rooms, unhelpful staff. There are signs posted saying you can print whatever you need from the communal computer, however, that proved not to be true. The French speaking woman who was working there refused to let me print out google maps directions that I needed to visit Pisgah even after explaining that I don't have a GPS, am not from here, and get lost easily. Was very rude about it too. If you have the money to stay elsewhere, do so.

A (bottom) $35 private pod. Twin bed with a privacy curtain, mini light, outlet, shelves and a locker. Pretty comfy.

Awful experience. I complained about the noise and they decided to kick me out rather than rectify the problem. Do not stay here.

The ceiling is peeling/cracking/sinking in multiple rooms. The bathrooms have broken tiles in the shower/problems flushing. It was suggested that their was free breakfast (and it does say "really, its a VERY SMALL breakfast" but literally what was free was black tea bags, coffee grounds, rice, and maple syrup..... so i don't even know why it was included unless to trick people. -I stayed in the all female room and it was great! Requested a bottom bunk and got one, room was nice and cool temperature wise. -The staff volunteers keep the place very clean but......are really weird. Hate to say this, but I've travelled the world at hostels and have never met more offputting staff. When I checked in (which is on your own, totally fine) I walked into the building to see 2 people sitting on the couch. I said hi to them, and they both just looked at me like I was bothering them, and went back to their phones.....ok...odd...but guests sometimes aren't social no worries.....only for me to learn a bit later that they were the staff volunteers. Others in the hostel had similar experiences, one girl in my room thought the guy didn't even speak English because when she originally checked in he responded in a different language and walked away leaving her confused as heck. Just super odd, and gave me a sour taste about this place. ALSO, when i found out they were staff and had been here for 3 weeks, I had asked for food recs/hikes/ things to do and they literally said "yea, I don't do anything so IDK"....like.....just super freaking weird. -all this to be said, I would still recommend this place, but really you are getting a very isolated experience on just a place to sleep. don't expect anything more.

However, the biggest issue is that the property does not currently reflect the photos shown online. When we arrived around 1pm, there was no one available to check us in and no answer when we called. We ended up leaving and returning a couple of hours later after finally hearing back. While waiting on the porch, we noticed several items left out--loose baseboard trim, a broom, a bag of cement, and a detached flexible downspout in the walkway--which immediately gave the impression that the property wasn't being actively maintained. The outdoor areas continued that theme. The side yard and fire pit area looked like they hadn't been used or maintained in some time, with weeds growing through the pebble ground, empty or dead plant pots, and older or broken furniture visible around the property. Inside, there are some pieces that reflect the historic character of the home, but the overall decor felt inconsistent. Some furnishings fit the period, while others felt more like standard, dated pieces that didn't contribute to the charm the property is marketed on. For the price, we expected a more polished and cohesive experience--especially when compared to nearby properties like The Black Walnut Bed & Breakfast, which appeared noticeably well maintained. Overall, we left feeling that the listing photos--many of which appear to be from prior ownership--don't accurately represent the current condition. With attention to upkeep and updated photos, this could be a much stronger experience.

And they kindly had our room ready early for my husband and me because our plane arrived several hours before check in. Karen also had helpful advice on things to see in and around Asheville. Our room was spacious, pretty, quiet, and relaxing. My sister had an adjoining smaller room and it was fun in the evenings to keep the door open before we went to sleep. Sitting on the inn porch in the evenings was delightful. We chose to stay in Montford instead of right downtown at the suggestion of a local friend. While you can't walk outside and immediately have a dozen restaurants around within a few blocks, there are a couple of good restaurants within a few minutes walk and downtown starts 10 or 15 minutes walk away. In return, you get a quieter leafy neighborhood with lovely architecture that's nice for a morning stroll. Plus we got restaurant delivery a couple of times and ate on the inn porch! Note that rooms are on the 2nd or 3rd floor, and there are stairs up to the main entrance. None of us are young and we were fine, but FYI I didn't see any elevators or chair lifts, so I believe you do need to be OK going up and down stairs. Steve was happy to help with luggage, though. Highly recommend The Lion and the Rose.

I stayed at Haywood Park Hotel in Asheville for an extended family reunion and paid almost $1,000 for a multi-night stay. Upon arrival, guests were informed that all elevators were out of service. My room was on the third floor (effectively the fourth due to a mezzanine level). I explained that I am 67 and have significant spine and Achilles issues and physically struggle with stairs, but there was no meaningful accommodation offered beyond someone carrying my luggage. To make matters worse, the room initially smelled so strongly of bleach/cleaner that my eyes burned and I could not remain inside. After multiple trips up and down several flights of stairs in summer heat to report the issue, the room was eventually treated and became tolerable. The elevator situation continued through Thursday, requiring repeated trips up and down unairconditioned stairwells and significantly aggravating existing physical issues. I ended up taking more pain medication during this trip than I had in weeks. Friday morning, I was suddenly informed there was access to an elevator through the connected atrium and, if needed, rooms were available at the sister hotel next door--with an offer to move our whole group. That was difficult to hear after spending two days struggling physically. It left me wondering why solutions or accommodations were not offered earlier. On top of this, key cards repeatedly stopped working (for me and family members), requiring additional inconvenience, and promised gestures--including comped valet parking--never materialized. I want to be fair: staff members themselves were polite and seemed to be trying to manage a difficult situation. My room and bed were comfortable once the odor issue was addressed. But hotel management handled this poorly. Historic property or not, charging premium rates while leaving guests with mobility concerns climbing multiple flights for days without proactive accommodations is not acceptable. This hotel claims to be ADA compliant. I left early because I simply wanted to get home and recover. ** After submitting feedback/review to the hotel directly, valet parking charges were refunded, which I appreciated. However, this occurred after the stay and did not change the overall experience.

Before coming, I read that the Gingerbread House competition had just ended and that the displays were still up. When we arrived, I didn't realize parking was now paid $30 which was surprising since the first time we visited it was free. Walking up to the hotel is impressive on its own. Seeing how this massive structure was built out of stone so long ago is amazing. Inside, there was a video playing that explained how the hotel was constructed, which was very informative. The roof being made of solid concrete to help make the building waterproof was especially interesting. When you walk through the front doors, the entry is grand and open, with huge fireplaces on both sides. The gingerbread house displays were spread across two floors and were absolutely incredible. It's amazing to see the talent, from young adults to experienced artists. Some of the displays look incredibly realistic. I added photos, and hopefully the video of the grand prize winner shows as well, it's truly impressive. We walked around the rest of the hotel for a while and then stopped for lunch (see my restaurant review). The food was excellent. We hope to return one day and stay here.
