Every time I come to this salon it is an amazing experience. When I call, staff is friendly and helpful. When I book an appointment, the process is smooth and simple. When I arrive, the salon is clean and tidy. I have gotten my hair done multiple times and never felt the need to specify on a stylist- they are ALL good. I had an appointment today at 1630 and at 1200 I received a text message that the stylist called out. I then called to be rescheduled for today again and Virginia who answered the call was the worst, uncaring, and rude receptionist who I've ever dealt with at a salon! She did not care the slightest bit that the customer was inconvenienced. She was rude on the phone and did not care that the salon would lose a customer! She then proceeded to hang up on me and not answer when I called back again! What a nice place this salon is! I will definitely make sure to never go back there again! read more

So similar to other negative reviews! I should have deepened my research. One month ago, Mode Aveda Gainesville West told me we were making an appointment for a color and trim for my daughter who has long, wavy, thick hair and the stylist, Chelsi is their senior color consultant. She had a picture showing a natural color to enhance her current style and shared it with the stylist. She came out 3 hours and $300 later having been highlighted and toned with blotchy pink hair! The worst part is the stylist lied to me stating that my daughter showed her a completely different picture and stood by her work. Needless to say, thank goodness Sally's is around the corner and the qualified stylist helped us repair this hair emergency immediately. Please do not give this salon any business. read more

I was disappointed with the quality of service which I received at Mode Aveda. About 1.5 months ago, I scheduled an appointment with Maybelline (one of their new hair stylists) for an all-over hair color to cover the brassy highlights in my hair. I specifically asked that the color be as possible to my natural hair color (an ashy medium brown, level 6) as possible. After arriving at the appointment and sitting through a two-hour hair coloring session, Maybelline began to dry my hair to reveal a gothic brown color which was several shades darker than my natural shade! When I expressed my concern, Maybelline reassured me that the color would lighten after several washes. Maybelline never informed me that she put in permanent, rather than demi-permanent color, in my hair, and that at Mode Aveda, "all-over color" was code for "permanent hair color." She then proceeded to give me a lackluster blow-out which was a far cry from the beautiful blow-outs that I regularly received when I do my hair at other salons. Dubiously, I paid $130 plus a 20% tip and left. Two and a half weeks and approximately 7 hair washes later, my hair remained the same dark, gothic color. When I called the salon to complain, I spoke with the salon manager, who had a condescending tone and seemed annoyed with my dissatisfaction. She instructed me to schedule a hair consultation to evaluate what could be done. At the consultation, I was seen by another stylist, who informed me that because the hair color was permanent, I would either need to strip out the hair color with bleach (a 6-hour procedure that would substantially damage my hair) or highlight my hair to break up the dark color (a 4-hour procedure which also damages hair) . She then asked me when I would like to schedule another appointment with Maybelline, to allow her to "fix" her mistake. When I told her that I did not want Maybelline, a junior hair stylist, to redo my hair again, she appeared taken aback that I would not give her a "second chance." I then requested and scheduled an appointment with John, a senior hair colorist. At my appointment, John seemed rushed and annoyed that he had to redo my hair and told me that I didn't need to bleach out or highlight my hair, but would be fine with a light bleach shampoo wash followed by a new hair color. I agreed and after two hours sitting in the chair, looked up to see reddish/copper hair at the top of my head. When I voiced my disappointment, John told me that my hair would always "draw." red and that he could try making the hair darker, but that it could look gothic brown as a result. Defeated, I agreed to keep the hair with the red roots and tipped John $40, and bought a $12 bottle of shampoo which I didn't need ( they wouldn't let me pay a tip with a credit card without buying something). Two weeks and $200+ later, I still have red hair at the top of my head. This is the first and last time I will be coming to Mode Aveda. I am very disappointed with the level of overall service at the salon, the lack of courteousness of the staff, the wasted money, and the lost time. I would not recommend this establishment. I absolutely loved my experience with Mode Aveda. They were able to squeeze me for an appointment the day before my graduation (thank you so much). Noah did such a wonderful job. He's incredibly personable, professional, and uses the best of the best tools. I have choppy face framing pieces and he was able to seamlessly blend it in with my layers. Super expensive for a cut that needs redoing in a few weeks. Charge extra for drying. Quality stylists, but you really pay top dollar for it. It's a huge sp[ace with most of it unused. Therefore, you are paying for lot of overhead in the west location. Seemed to be a lot of unnecessary people like receptionists and someone to take you to your chair. If you can afford the time to go frequently and at least $70 + tip for a simple men's cut, go for it. read more

I've been going to Aveda for years as I travel and am confident that I don't have to worry. However, the last 3 times I was home and went to this salon. Each time the service and the cut/color got worse. No personalization, the wash chair was broke, and my cut was so bad I actually went home and had to style some of it myself just so I didn't look like someone put a bowl on my head before cutting. I've been coming here for over two years now and love my stylist Shandell. She listens to my needs in regards to my hair and make my visit very enjoyable. I have noticed that there is a high turnover with stylists here. I get the feeling that they are not very understanding of the stylists needs and are not family friendly. It doesn't take a genius to see that they hire younger and younger who have no home commitments. I've run a business before. Be careful of not supporting your employees or you will continue to lose your client base. read more

I worked for them for a month and now they won't give me my third week paycheck! It's sad because the first week I worked there they took down their pay scale and wouldn't email me it like they said they would. I knew something was shady with them on how they pay their employees and I was right!!! I truly feel bad for the stylist that work there. Giving them video classes when I used to get hands-on classes and not being charged for it!! Oh yeah, they charge them for that too, if it's hands on. What a joke! Pay me my money! I went there to pick up my check that was left there in my station, they said they would mail it to me and six weeks later, still nothing. Don't go there! The only reason I come to this salon is for Nicole. She is fabulous. She has always done a great job on my hair and both of my sisters' hair as well. I trust her judgment completely. She is very professional and really listens to your preferences, which is really important since after you leave the salon you're the one who has to look at yourself. I've never gotten a bad cut or color and I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone. The salon is cute and stylish, but like all the other posts have said, the owner is kind of a jerk and not friendly at all. I followed my stylist to Mode Salon West. Yang is the best. I have hard to color, long thick/heavy straight hair. Bad layering makes my hair look choppy. Finding a good hairstylist in Gainesville was not easy. Most rarely spend more than 30 min cutting my hair. Yang on the other hand gives the time my hair needs whether it's the cut or coloring. I don't even need to communicate what I want done anymore. It makes the process a lot simpler. read more

I'm only leaving a 5 star review because of Josett!! This was my second appt at Mode Aveda and I came back reluctantly. The first appt I had a treatment and haircut (the Aveda treatment I've been getting for years just in a different state at Aveda salon) and it burned my hair! :( literally as I was leaving the salon I felt weird burning on my scalp and upon shampooing my hair at home I discovered my hair broke and I now have a lot of baby hair. This has never happened to me before and I personally use Aveda products and have always gone to Aveda salons so it must have been due to a styling/blow dying technique of the first stylist I saw. Needless to say, I cancelled my second appointment with him. I then saw Josett who was wonderful, really listened to what I wanted and OMG she gave me the best haircut ever. I didn't even get a treatment this time ( I was scared) and my hair still looks more lively than ever! It's shiny, bouncy and manageable again all thanks to the haircut she gave me. I scheduled a diamond treatment and toner with her in January and I can't wait. Thank you so much for the wonderful service! read more

The receptionists are rude but a woman who calls herself "H" is the worst by far. Every time I have called to book an appt or make a change she has been short, rude, condescending, and arrogant. She should not be the first point of contact for any business! In the 4 months I went to this salon they had almost a complete staff turnover which in turn caused me to have 3 different hairdressers within that time period ( not by my choice). Each time I would try someone by the next appt they had quit. They have a very high rate of staff turnover there. My first appt I was called 20 min before the appt and told my stylist was running 1 hour behind and I would have to wait. My third appt I was running 20 min behind and called to let them know, they said it was fine, but when I arrived I was charged half the appt fee already and told my appt was rescheduled. Doesn't seem fair right?? Thankfully Jon did do my hair upon my arrival so not all was lost. I feel all customers should be treated much better than this but especially when I am a 20% tipper and tried to ride the bumpy wave of staff turnover. I love Aveda and Jon was great but I will be taking my business to a different Aveda Salon from now on. It's a shame! read more

I finally found a stylist who gives a great cut without taking off length! In the past, I'd go for almost a year without a hair cut because every time I'd go in for a trim the stylist would end up taking off way too much length. Karen is wonderful! The staff at Mode Salon West really go above and beyond for their customers. I went in for a cut and color last Tuesday morning and was really tired from running around to meetings beforehand. One of the employees asked if I wanted anything to drink before my appointment and I asked if they had any coffee. She said no they didn't, but before I even knew it she ran right out the door... and five minutes later brought me back a coffee from down the street! I was blown away. Then I had my appointment with Eugene and I told him I was on a bit of a schedule. He got me finished up before the time I needed to take off. The place is nice and friendly but when I came in to get an ironing done, I was told the price would be $15 and up. They didn't specify which gave them flexibility to charge me (or any customer) however much they'd like. I ended up leaving the place paying $35 plus tip which I wasn't expecting. The only place I have ever had my hair done in Gnv, and the only place I ever will. If I ever have to move, I am kidnapping Shawna, and bringing her with me. The best thing is they have a range of prices based on the stylist's level of experience, and the stylists occasionally brainstorm during appointments, so you get the benefit of a more experienced stylist at a more affordable price. Everyone is totally invested in giving you the look you want in the most flattering way possible. Shawna has been doing my hair since the fall of 2011, and I am the happiest I've been with my hair in my entire life. I have never had anyone take so many pains over coloring and cutting my hair. You get a "moment of wellness" mini massage with essential oils at the beginning of the appointment, which is my favorite part. read more

Attention curly girls: Russell at Mode Salon West is pure genius. I ended up in his chair yesterday by chance or good luck, and I left the salon happier than I have ever been after a haircut. This morning I washed and styled it myself for the first time, and I couldn't believe how healthy and bouncy my curls looked or what a beautiful shape my hair had. He is passionate about what he does, and I would bet he's equally good with straight hair. I won't trust my hair to anyone else. read more

As soon as I sat down, the woman would not stop berating my thin, damaged hair. I know that I have split ends and that my hair is not the best, but I like to feel good when I go to the salon. It is a rare treat for me to go to the salon and be pampered, but I felt horrible about myself the whole time and when I left. They also don't style your hair--you have to pay $15 extra for that. When I pay $45, I expect my hair to be styled! I also expect to be pampered and feel good about myself. I will not be back. read more

After giving a detailed description of how I wanted my hair cut, the lady did what she wanted to do without even considering what I said. I told her I wanted my hair to be a shoulder length bob which would have meant about an inch off and she cut about 4 inches off. Once she took the first cut I wanted to cry but the whole time she just kept saying how this was the best hair cut for me and that it was my style. I commented that it was too short and she then informed me that she was stacking the back of my hair so that it would have the right shape in the back. To make it worse, the sides of my hair are extremely uneven because she was rushing through my hair cut. I have been here several times before and had a pleasant experience but this was absolutely the last visit I will ever make to this establishment. I am extremely upset about my hair and because it is so short there is no way to conceal it - I can't simply put it into a ponytail or a bun. Horrible experience for an upscale salon where a haircut is $45. Not something to be expected when you are paying that price. read more
