They are aged, rustic cottages on Big Shag Lake. As long as you don't need all the acoutrements of home or an upscale hotel and manage your expectations of a cabin in the woods, you can certainly have a terrific visit. Cons - furnishings, bedding, linens and housewares are all a bit tired and worn. No A/C can be unpleasant if you happen to stay during an unusual hot spell. water smells of iron, you share space with spiders, and the shower is tiny and dark. Pros - Quiet setting on lakefront property, rowboat included, motor and paddleboat available for rent, firepit and grill available, property set way off the road so the only traffic you'll hear going by is on the lake. Lots of windows allow you to take in the outdoors and a passing breeze. Gary and Su and very gracious hosts and work hard to ensure guest satisfaction. Molly, the resident dog, is one of the best behaved dogs we have ever seen and very lovable. Deer sightings, raspberries and blueberries are plentiful. Sunrise from the cottages is breathtaking, and with a brief drive to the other side of the lake you can enjoy an equally pleasing sunset. Proximity to Marquette, the airport, Pictured Rocks, numerous waterfalls and other areas to explore make it a great central location. You also didn't need to go too far to enjoy the towns around Au Train. There were a total of 11 people and the place sleeps a good 14. Everyone was comfortable and enjoyed our time at the cabin. Ages 2-80 and there was something nearby for all to do. They also have cable and WiFi in the cabin as well so if you want a little down time it's available to you. It was a 6-6:30 hr drive for us but it was worth it. I definitely recommend this place if you have a large family looking to enjoy some time together out in nature. They do offer a smaller cabin next door to this place as well.

What would it take to get a five star rating out of me? I'm not sure. Maybe EITHER more rustic & secluded OR more luxurious & refined? That's the only semi-negative thing I will say about this place, The hotel is nice, the workers were nicer, the rooms were clean and the halls were quiet. The continental breakfast was pretty solid too. Bananas (finally! after 9 days in Michigan hotels, I was beginning to think there was a law against them) mini omelets, bagels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, turkey sausage and a pancake machine. The real star of this hotel is the back patio view. Sitting on their deck enjoying the views of Lake Superior while having a cold beverage is pretty amazing. The rooms with lake views have their own balconies or you can be a cheap ass like me and share the patio with the others.

Room left a lot to be desired. Paid $200 for the smallest lakefront room and was not worth it. Bedding was clean; however, room was not and maintenance was poor. Cobwebs in most corners and up the walls behind doors, dirty coffee pot, coffee splattered on window sill. Weatherstripping separated from door and daylight coming through, pine trim not sealed before painted so the sap is coming through, drywall coming apart in multiple areas, shower caulk and drywall separated from the shower, 1/3 of the bathroom ceiling was patched and repainted leaving the rest to not match, sloppy painting and patch not painted. Had a frig and microwave but lacking typical amenities like iron, ironing board, alarm clock and outlets. Literally one outlet available and none by the bed. TV great for the deaf because ability to turn off closed captioning was disabled. See pics for examples. I'd suggest finding other lodging. Perhaps rooms other than 125 are better. While this is close to town, there is a motel and hotel in town that are comparable to the cute outside of Beach Inn Motel.
