Nice "Mom and Pop" Motel. The room was not large, when you opened the door, it hit the bed. I should have asked for a room with 2 beds(I did request to be closer to the restaurant next door to walk to) It had been renovated, as was the bathroom. It needed a fan in the bathroom There was a small table and chairs, mini frig and microwave. It could use black out drapes as each room had an outdoor light on all night. I'm glad I had an eye mask or I would've been awake all night. There is a good family restaurant called Family Inn next door. The road noise can be loud at times but we live in Milwaukee by a freeway so we are used to the street noise. The room we had was not very big, the door hit the bed. I should have asked for a double bed room as we would have had more room. It worked for us but I felt cramped. read more

We stayed here on July 3 on our motorcycle trip around Lake Michigan. We just wanted to clean place to lay our head and this was perfect. The room was spotless, the beds were so incredibly comfortable, I can't even tell you. We stayed at a place the next night for 200 bucks that was not even close to as comfortable. Yes, it needs a little updating but it's so clean and the beds are so comfy and the air-conditioning was so cold, I don't care that I felt like I walked into 1955. Plus the front desk kid, I can't remember his name but he was 20 years old, he was so sweet and funny. And the young lady who helped us the next morning could not have been nicer. This is a great place for a good night's sleep. Don't overlook it just because it's old. The price was right, and we got a great nights sleep. Just exactly what we wanted. read more

Location was great. However, no one at the front desk bothered to tell me that o had to ask for a hair dryer. They all left and I'm. It even sure anyone was at the front desk over night. The 4 star rating is not for amenities or luxuries - but because it was a great value. We were not sure we wanted to stay because of the look of a very old motel - which it is. Our room was knotty pine and rustic looking. But the room was comfortable if not large and reasonably quiet - we had the windows open and mostly just heard the train going by at midnight and in the morning. TV was older (not flat-screen), wifi worked very well and was free. Bathroom was small - BUT all this for only $60 including tax. Staff was friendly and we had no complaints. The picture of a room included on this yelp page does not seem like it is from this motel. Our room had a double bed and a single bed and although it was in a smaller back building, the room shown seems larger and different style. read more

I would never stay here again, nor would I recommend this place to anyone. Luckily we were only here for like 8 hours, if not I would have asked for a refund and left. The pictures are so misleading as very few of the rooms are remodeled and updated like the ones in the photos. Our bathroom looked NOTHING like the photographed rooms. 1. The mattress was from the 70's with one of those yellow egg-crate looking foam toppers. The fitted bed sheet didn't even fit the bed so we had to try to adjust that the best we could. 2. The walls are paper thin and it's located right along the highway. There could have just as well not been a wall there cause it sounded like the traffic was driving a foot from our bed. Luckily we had ear plugs. MUST HAVE EAR PLUGS TO STAY HERE. 3. The carpet was disgusting and there was no way I was touching it without shoes on. Granted carpet in hotels is always gross, but this was very obviously stained and on a different level. 4. The AC didn't work. Enough said about that. 5. The door just had a lock on the door knob, no dead bolt or anything so we felt slightly unsafe. At the end of the day, we can not comprehend how this place has 4.5 stars on yelp and 8.2/10 on hotels.com. read more

This has been a great stay. The owners have went above and beyond making sure we were comfortable. It's a clean, nice place to stay. The value is unbelievable. I recommend booking through them than booking on a "discount secret rate" site. The mornings are really low key. First off... cleanest and most pleasant room that I've stayed in in years. No frills but nice fridge, microwave and television. Furniture was modest and newer and the bed was super comfy and obviously high quality. Bathroom was updated with super plush towels and even had lotion, shampoo and conditioner. Shower was hot and lots of water pressure. Now, let me sing the praises of the manager, Tina. If I ever own a motel, I am stealing her. Lol warm and inviting and stayed when I called at 11:20 so that someone was in the office when we got there. She was attentive and when our air conditioner didn't work, she went above and beyond and at midnight, she went to the back to fix it and made sure we were totally pleased before she went home for the night. Outstanding service. For the price and for a small, privately owned motel, this is top notch. The owners should be so proud Stayed in room 14. We will be back. read more

We stayed here at this time last year and are planning a return trip. The motel is very conveniently located for easy access to "downtown" Escanaba as well as the highway to head out of town altogether. The room was spacious, clean and cheerful. We both slept well and that is good when you are on a road trip. They are also a pet friendly motel, so our dog Foxtrot will be joining up from now on. We are so happy that this place exists. It makes long weekends to the U.P. more fun. read more

Definitely a classic no-tell motel. Rooms are small but clean. Water was hot in the shower. There was a fridge and a coffee maker. Price is low. The person checking us in was super nice and gave good suggestions for night life and food. When we checked out the guy was also super friendly and let us raid their buffet of sugary goods (donuts, muffins, etc) for the drive home. All-in-all not a bad spot. read more

Before I being I have to say this...if you go into this motel with the expectation that you are walking into a JW Marriott then you are going to be highly disappointed. We were making a weekend trip to the area for my nieces H.S. open house and needed an inexpensive place to stay that allowed pets. After checkout out several different websites to get an idea of different places we came across Sunset Lodge. According to what I found it was rated the top place to stay in the area by customer reviews. So, after looking at the prices I booked us a room. Some rooms have been renovated and others have not. Mine was not. But I don't mind that at all. I figured that those are the rooms that allow pets as they have some older finishes. The reservation that I had was for 1 queen bed. When I walked into the room there was a table with 2 chairs right underneath the window that faced the parking lot and US-41. The bed was next to that with a night stand on each side of the bed. Beyond that was a coat rack, microwave, mini fridge, and the bathroom. Overall first impression was the place was cute, and what I had expected for the area that I was in. Just a cute roadside motel! The bathroom was a little small, but nothing that I couldn't deal with. After all, I am not going to live there for the rest of my life. I will say the shower set up was strange and made it difficult for me, but most of the time I have issues as I am 6'4". The TV was mounted to the wall in the corner which gave more floor space, and I am glad they chose to do that as it would have been cramped if they did not. The thermostat on the wall controlled the baseboard heating only. The room did have an A/C unit in the wall by the bathroom door. It was an older unit and seemed to struggle at times to keep up with our demands...but since the warmest it got while we were in town was 70 degrees, it really wasn't needed a ton. The room door did not have a deadbolt but a chain as well as a locking door knob. I never once felt unsafe or that someone was going to come and get into the room. The TV selection was pretty good and gave a wide variety of channels to entertain yourself when it was time to hang out in the room for the evening. They do offer a breakfast in the morning, but it's strictly a grab and go style with some fruit and donuts, muffins, etc. The breakfast does come with the room...and it's better than nothing. There is a restaurant right next to the motel if you want something more than a muffin. The staff that we encountered during our stay were beyond friendly. They gave us extra blankets and pillows when we asked, cleaned our room after we left and did a great job, and just were outstanding people. I am pretty sure that the lady that checked us in on Thursday was one of the owners and she was great. Told me about all the different events going on in Escanaba and how to get around by using a map they have in the office. The overall amenities are few as there is no pool, continental breakfast, business center, etc. BUT the overall value of the room, the friendliness of the staff outweigh all the "extras" I may have missed out on. I will definitely stay here again! OH and a great bonus...they don't charge an extra fee for pets when you bring them along!!! read more

Clean,Cheap, and Friendly. I took a motorcycle trip around Lake Michigan with my My fiancee and a buddy. This was our second stop coming from Wisconsin. Our First night staying at the Racine, WI Marriott. The Sunset Motel may seem a little questionable from the road, but once you go into the office and check-in with Jared (Owner). It instantly changes. Jared had lots of helpful knowledge about the area. He told us good spots to visit on our bikes, and gave us good suggestions on where to eat. I was very happy to have visited Jared and his motel. Location: - Close to the roadways we need Rt 2 and M 35. It was close to the downtown area, and it took us 45 minutes to get up to Lake Superior. There is a restaurant and gas station in in walking distance. It is close to the downtown, and a nice doughnut shop called Doughnut Connection. Rooms: - It was really Clean, and organized. The room's had clean towels, tv, microwave, and mini fridge. Overall: -We were all very happy with our stay. It was a very nice stopping point. What a great little gem to stay at when visiting the nearby eben ice caves! The staff was very friendly and our room was perfect for our over nighter with a teenager and 8 year old. We were able to charge up our devices and use the free wifi. The bathroom was small, but it did have a nice shower stall and was very clean and updated. The room we took for the night was a two bed double. The room came with a coffeemaker, mini fridge and microwave. We didn't hear our neighbors accept for a door slam of a outside car or the door opening next door. After taxes we paid around $70. With the extra money we saved we drove up to the apostle island ice caves the following morning to continue our weekend adventure. We will definetly come back. Kudos to the family owners. You have a really nice motel that made our family feel safe and comfortable. read more

A great room for the price. Super comfy bed, strong Wi-Fi, a nice shower (even though I'm a bath gal 100%, it worked out). We definitely had a renovated room in October 2018 that felt very current. It was a bit small, particularly the bathroom, but sufficient for two adults. I liked the in-room table and two chairs and a nice full length mirror. Lots of small comforts that you don't always get in this price category, so we were impressed. Grabbed some tea, fruit and biscotti at checkout. Two thumbs up. read more

Almost did not stay once we saw the place. So you can say we had reservations about our reservation. After staying at so many up scale chain places it was a leap of faith to stay here. It was fine. The room was comfortable for the two beds, a single and a double. Not spacious but comfortable. The sheets were a little course from starch or price but very clean and in good shape. Plenty of outlets due to a totally empty power strip near the desk. Small shower and toilet area. There was a TV but did not try it. The wifi worked better than lots of the other places we stayed. Good speed and easy to connect. We had the windows open and so we could hear the rooms next door but could not tell what they were saying. We also heard a train at midnight. Cost about $60 read more

We stayed here one night on our journey around the lake. We stayed in the back building. Our room was small, with a bed, table and chairs, fridge & microwave, and tv. Our room was rustic and adorable. Not fancy, but had window that opened, big fluffy towels and was spotless. The bathroom had a shower but no tub, which was fine for us. The owner greeted us when we checked in and gave us detailed directions to the waterfront and several recommendations for dinner. All staff we talked to were extremely friendly. We would definitely stay here again, very quaint and friendly. It's also great to see a young couple working to revive an older motel! read more
