My dad is a regular at Modern Gentlemen Salon and speaks highly of the stylists. After a two months hiatus from my last cut -- I was long overdue, so we stopped by this afternoon. The place is modern and stylish. The atmosphere is relaxing and intimate and fortunately I had a short waiting time. The best experience of the wait time was not surfing through my phone, or flipping through the pages of a GQ magazine. Oh no, it was being offered a refreshment and sipping a glass of whiskey. They offer other refreshments such as water and soda, but I decided to keep it classy. Maya was my stylist and let me just say that she is excellent at what she does. She asked how I typically style my hair and after a few back and forth comments, she went straight to work. I wanted a new look and let her take the wheel. Before finding Modern Gentleman, I regularly visited a number of chains and boutiques. The chains were all noisy and impersonal. The boutiques were slightly better, but I found myself spending a lot of time in waiting areas despite having appointments, and I never connected with any of the stylists. Modern Gentleman is exactly what I'd been looking for. Maya is the best. She's effortlessly conversational, and, thankfully, remembers how I want my hair done far better than I do. Even on the rare occasions when I have to wait a few minutes, the glass of bourbon and leather sofa make it all okay. When I told her I had an infant son in need of a trim, she said she was great with kids and immediately told me to bring him in. I think these photos speak for themselves. I've been going to Maya for 4 years and I love this place. It's very detail oriented with plenty of great perks. You get offered a drink on arrival with some nice whiskey options, a wash and condition to start, a straight razor shave on your neck, and a rinse and styling afterwards. My first time with Maya, I told her I wanted to change hairstyles after having the same Southern bangs style for 20+ years. She sat me down and we talked it over deciding what to do with my hair. She decided what would be best and most comfortable for me, and she got to work right away. I've now gone back 3 more times since then, and her work remains solid. Did not meet client's expectations. Very disappointing after I requested a simple men's haircut trim and consultation. One of the most uncomfortable hair cutting experiences I've had, so I wouldn't recommend this salon. I've been living in the WP/B-town area now for 8 years and had always gone to Floyd's on Milwaukee. Happened to squeeze in a walk -in to MGS a couple Friday's ago and I'll never go back to Floyd's again. Ever. Three reasons... First, for the same price as Floyd's I got a haircut and a product, but that's where the similarities stop. Second, Marcin, who cut my hair, was so damn awesome in every way...suggesting a new cut for me, chatting it up about fast cars, UFC, crazy times from our pasts, and most importantly focused on all the details with making the cut work...btw, like it more than anything anyone's done before for me. Ever. Last, environment was relaxing. No, I didn't get that massager thing Floyd's does, but I didn't need it. Shampoo, hot towel were all good n better after starting with the delicious complimentary cappuccino. Ended with me looking forward to the next cut and them giving me the reminder to schedule it. This is seriously something I need, as I find it hard to self - motivate, while my haircut goes from cool to "Do you think I care about what's on my head?". He's been going to floyds for a while and was looking for a new place to get his haircut because he always complained about how they can't get it right. I helped him look around for a different place and this place had JUST opened, It was perfect timing!
