I've been wanting to lighten my hair for a while. Stumbled upon the Yelp reviews and decided to give it a go. I am a sucker for salons that have online booking. Booked a haircut and ombré appointment all online. Easy peasy. The salon is right near the El. Great location that's easy to get to. The salon has a minimalist decor with a wide variety of magazines. I am always early or on time for all my appointments. Had a wait a few minutes while my stylist finished their client's hair. No biggie. Informed my stylist what I wanted and looking to do. I understand it is a gradual process of lightening my hair and that this would be the first step. My end goal was grey ombré. I already knew and mentioned that what I want will take at least 2-3 more visits. So this is just the first step to getting there. The stylist instead starts rolling his eyes. He then goes to me "Well I only booked you for 45 minutes." I then informed him that online I booked ombré and a haircut. He then confirmed I was correct, but he has only 45 minutes. I should've ran out of that chair. Instead I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt since he had good reviews. Took me 3-4 hours of sitting in that chair waiting for my hair to process without heat. No offer for tea, water, mags...nada. I've been to several salons before, but never had a stylist copping so much attitude. You could tell he was annoyed that my color, cut, and took more than 45 minutes. The stylist was doing a lot of eye rolling and sighing. The end result was definitely gray . He styled my hair nicely with beach waves. Didn't realize it was only the front by ears, bangs, and a few pieces near my neck were only gray until I had to style my hair the next day. Also my bangs were cut way too short along with extra layers. Would I go back or recommend it..nope. Maybe with other stylists it might have been better possibly. I get we all have bad days, but this was just horrible. read more

The salon itself is quite nice (sunny, friendly staff, neat and inviting), but this review is for my OG, Michele. After moving to Chicago, I was casting around for a place where I could get the kind of colorwork I like (bold, bright, "unnatural" shades) done, and I wasn't having much success. I'd been to two salons but either hadn't clicked with the stylist or hadn't been happy with the color. Then I complimented a barista at Jupiter Outpost on her super-cute hair (platinum pixie cut with patches of pearlescent color), and she mercifully pointed me in Michele's direction. Michele has not only successfully bleached my naturally dark hair white as a ghost on several occasions; she has also bestowed me with perfect mermaid hair (deep aqua), pearlescent orchid, and silver and pink tones. She's fantastic with bleach and tones and exciting colors, and she's the one you want to go to to fix your head if another stylist did you dirty. She's a master with Kevin Murphy products in particular. She's also an incredible empath and a very fun person who I look forward to seeing with each appointment. Muitos beijos! read more

This review is SO overdue! Michele Parisotto is an artist and a lifesaver. I recently moved to Chicago, and walked away from Kevin Murphy hair color. BAD decision. After a few months of my hair being awful - I spent a good deal of time looking for a person who works with that brand of hair color. THEN I FOUND Michele. I've been to salons dying my hair since I was 13 and this salon has truly become my all time favorite. I'm usually a salon hopper but I've consistently visited Axelle + Ivy for over a year. I'd continue if I wasn't moving out of the area! First win, they have online booking. It's super easy to schedule and adjust your appointments. Any place that uses technology like that gets my vote! Second win is Cassandra. She really rocks. I sometimes have a hard time describing my vision or what im looking to change, but she seems to easily get it. I've always let her make recommendations and have gone with what she has suggested. But, the best thing about Cass is that she does not force the small talk/chair chat. I'm naturally a reserved person. A lot of times I come in after the workday (she has evening hours, bless you Cass) and the last thing I want to do it small talk for 3 hours after I spent my entire day doing that. She respects my inner introvert and hasn't shown any issue with me working on my laptop or phone while she does her magic. " I'm a dude and unfortunately I relate to George's lament far too well. So what am I doing going to a salon and not a cheap barber shop? One word: Tanya. I have been getting my hair cut by Tanya for about 3 years now. She's nice, cool, fun and makes getting a haircut seem like a day at Six Flags, but without the long lines, crappy food or long drive to Gurnee. Ok, in retrospect, getting a haircut is nothing like Six Flags, but getting a haircut from Tanya is still like riding a roller coaster, but without the queasy feeling that you can get, especially if you've had a lousy hot dog. Axellle + Ivy Salon may have just opened up in August of 2014, but I've been seeing Krystle for YEARS. Seriously. She's the longest relationship that I've had with a stylist ever. I think it's been at least since like 2007ish. Maybe before. I can't remember that far back... She cuts and styles my hair effortlessly. So much so that when it grows out, it still looks great. While I typically get my hair just cut, I've had it colored a few times, and it looks beautifully natural. I have thick hair, and taming it sometimes is less than fun. Krystle listens to what I want, and will throw in suggestions as to what would look better (let's face it, I have no clue what I'm looking for when I get my hair cut.). Thanks to her, she even encouraged me to grow my hair out, and I receive many compliments on it (but short was SO MUCH EASIER! :-) ). The new salon is bright, and the crystal chandeliers are an added bonus to brighten up your day! Super easy to get to as the El stop is literally right there, but come a bit early, as street parking can be tough, especially earlier in the day. Krystle is seriously amazing! It has been so long since I have actually liked my hair, but since she did my hair yesterday I can't stop looking in the mirror. She really listened to what I wanted, and gave me the beautiful blended balayage highlights I wanted. I love my hair cut too. As someone who has been trying to grow my hair out for years, it's always really annoying when a stylist cuts a lot off when I ask for a trim, but this was not one of those times. Krystle took all those pesky split ends off, and the difference in my length is barely noticeable.It was my first time at Axelle + Ivy, but it definitely won't be my last. The salon has a great atmosphere. The modern interior is so beautiful and elegant! Everything is super clean, and all the girls are so nice. Axelle and Ivy was recommended to me by a co-worker - two co-workers, actually! In my twenties, I cut of my long hair and had a Miley type haircut. Longer on the top and very short (almost buzzed) on the sides. I loved it for about three of the five years but I definitely outgrew the Miley look in my thirties and started growing my hair out about 2 years ago. It's been a struggle since I love being blonde and as any stylist with tell you, it's hard to grow your hair when you like to bleach. Long story short, I knew I needed a haircut and went to see Cass. I was nervous she wouldn't listen and just take matter into her own hands and cut off way too much like the last two girls I'd seen (used to get cuts at Twisted Scissors and color at Solo). But she didn't - and she didn't judge me for being nervous either! Cass literally works miracles - aka she is very well trained and has a ton of experience. She explained that a good haircut can take off bad ends and give the illusion of longer hair. Probably the best haircut I've ever had and I felt so good afterwards! Michelle was AMAZING!!! I needed a corrective cut. I had crazy short layers and definitely the "mom" cut/Jennifer Anniston "Rachel" cut. Michelle brought me back to the 21st century with a bob/lob, blunt but still with some movement. She came in early to take me (I flew in from Boston and only had a few hours) and she took her time and did a wonderful job. She was also extremely engaging, warm and friendly. I highly recommend her! Also, the other stylists were super accommodating l - contacting Michelle to see if she could come in early, helping me to charge my phone which was dead from travel. After reading reviews here on Yelp, I decided to visit Cass to get my long hair trimmed and shaped into more defined layers. She did a phenomenal job, and I couldn't be happier! My hair feels soft, looks healthy, and I feel more confident already. Cass was easy to talk to, but also didn't try to force conversation (I'm fairly quiet, and I love observing the techniques stylists use, rather than talking through the appointment--she let me zone out, and it didn't feel like we were sitting in a tense silence). I really hate being pressured into buying things, so I very much appreciated that she didn't try to sell me any products, though I asked about them, and bought two of them because I loved the way they looked in my hair. Axelle + Ivy seems like an intimidating "beautiful people" type salon, but everyone was kind and down-to-earth and easy to relate to. I highly recommend the salon, and Cass. I honestly wish I could go back to this place every day. Everyone was super friendly without forcing any awkward conversations or pushing any products. It was clear everyone had a ton of experience (and talent!) working in the hair industry. In the few hours I was there, the clientele ranged from long blonde balayages to bright red highlights to men to children. I followed sweet stylist Emily here from Solo Salon and boy am I happy she moved. Axelle + Ivy is so warm and welcoming. I've had a hard time finding a salon in Chicago that's 1. not ridiculously expensive and 2. Not snobby and pretentious. All the women that work here are sweet and welcoming and I always feel like I'm in for a treat when I visit! The salon itself is very clean, modern and minimalist - just what I like. I've been seeing Emily for over a year now and I adore her. Her prices are affordable, she's such a delight to chat with and I always feel like a million bucks when I leave. Moved to this neighborhood and decided to try Axelle+Ivy based on a colleague's recommendation. The salon's vibe is cool - under Lake St. train tracks and with neon pink signage. However, the stylists' care doesn't match the environment/price point: After my initial highlight/haircut w/ Cassandra (who's nice personality-wise), I went home, looked in the mirror, and realized she simply hadn't taken enough length off, particularly in back. (My hair grows fast, and it can get Sister Wives-long if too much is left at appointments.) No biggie - I phoned the salon and asked if I could stop in for a bit more cut off. Usually requests like these are no big deal for stylists (I've shortened bangs post-appointment like this before); stylists will fit you in same or next day, especially salons like these where you're paying stylists a few hundred for highlight/cut and tipping high, too. Well, this time I was told the soonest I could be squeezed in a fix was five days later. Oddly long wait time for a fix but no worries, I could wait. However, when I visited the salon for the fix, I became really confused re: why the fix wait had been so long. The stylist "fixed" the length by spraying a bit of water on it and cutting. My hair is thick, layered, and slightly wavy, so it's really necessary for a stylist to take care and wash/get the entire head wet so that the lengths don't end up uneven. This "fix" took all of 15 minutes, and when I got home, I realized one of the sides was uneven/noticeably shorter than the other. I didn't even bother going back - and called my old stylist in Lincoln Park instead. My old stylist couldn't believe someone had left the layered lengths so unevenly. If I hadn't paid $200+ and waited days for this final highlight/style and its fix, I wouldn't have been so frustrated. But at that price point, service/quality should match. There are far better hair places in Chicago at this price point or even less. read more

The owners just opened their own place and after knowing Tanya from another salon, this is the 3rd salon I follow Tanya to :-) she always does a great job cutting my hair, always even and NEVER too much like how some stylists chop everything off.
