One word to summarize MJC : useless. I challenge anyone to find a single graduate from this college that isn't a nurse (or some lesser derivative, like RT or LVN). There's a good chance you won't, because that's all this college ever produces. Back when I was a young (and very naive) human I used to think college and higher education was for advancing humanity. Building better technology, scaling, furthering our understanding of the universe. Boy, was I mistaken, because at MJC I learned the truth about what college is REALLY for. Which is just to PRETEND to want all that but actually just kiss @$$, smile, feign competence, and, most importantly, try to get a big paycheck. ​​​​​​At MJC, everyone just agrees with the majority, and logic or critical thinking? Hah! Nice sense of humor you got there . Now that's what I have to say about the students there and how they're nothing but incompetent Muppets. Let's talk about the college as a whole Releasing nothing but Healthcare workers. Why does MJC do this? Because its the easiest field for incompetence to hide. You see, as a plumber, you either fixed the sink or you didnt. As an electrician, your light either works, or it doesn't. If you're a mechanic, the car either runs... or it doesn't. But in Healthcare there's plenty of incompetent actors to flourish behind ambiguity. The right approach, the right mannerisms, the right personality. All of these are subjective and debatable, unlike whether or not a car simply runs. Another reason why Modesto poops out these useless Healthcare workers is because its the easiest "problem" to fabricate. If your car runs, you assume it works. If your sink drains, you assume no problem. Theres no "nuance", theres no "condition", theres nothing to attach narratives to. Theres no "your car work, oh but it has 'autism' and thats why you need to also give it this". Theres also no emotions. Your car gets serviced for an oil change, there no gut wrenching potential (or phantasmal) "cancer" thats going to demand big monies to cure a "problem" you didnt know you had. Healthcare is the easiest field to scam humans with because it has the biggest cloud of ambiguity and distortion compared to the trades. Its honestly sickening once you see it for what it is. Im not about to waste my life on gaslighting nonsense, even if it pays well. Besides, I can do much better with my capabilities without these uselsss "higher" education camps. I'd give it one star but then I'd be completely also discrediting the useless sciences I did learn there like Anatomy, Physio, and Microbiology. But beyond a few worthwhile classes (that you cant even really capitalize on without significant capital) going here is a waste if you truly want to level up your intelligence. Class of 2022 & 2024 So many great memories at this college! They made buying my school supplies and books very affordable towards the end of my educational journey. I am very satisfied that I chose to do all my classes here. I also met a lot of nice peers in every class. The professors/ Instructors are great. Sure, there are a few iffy ones, but that is everywhere and the good ones outweigh the 'not so great' ones. It was such a bittersweet moment when I graduated. The 10/10 recommend taking classes here before transferring to a CSU, or a UC. read more

I cannot say enough POSITIVE+ statements about this college & as importantly, the "Counselors" that I've met & worked with, when navigating the road to my FIRST (1st) Collegiate Degree who made my graduating, at all possible, +MADE IT possible for me to possibly be able to walk away; yet again, with another degree due to my life-experiences, relationships & commitment to be a 100% above-board student & person during my educational goals in, & outside of the Collegiate adventure... Review reflecting my College Graduation recently...I was never told that I was selected for the Valedictorian attribute but I was thinking about that recently & wondering what I would have needed, doing while enrolled in college or not; to earn such a prestigious gift/award... I really like the interface, they use for your "student back-office area" where you can request a transcript, check your progress when actively enrolled in class(es) , and pay your tuition, OH!!! And see the balances & awards of your personally-applied-for, Financial Aid & more... The Pell Grant offered me hundreds of dollars EACH SEMESTER to continue in Collegiate work, but I couldn't qualify for receiving the "pre-approved funding" it as it required so many units, each semester of courses, towards my chosen degree of: Associates of Arts, General Studies, Social & Behavioral Sciences, & I was only able to complete one/1 course each semester due to my pre-existing health conditions aka; Disabilities. FAFSA=Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Where is it located?: https://studentaid.gov/ No one that I could tell, discriminated against me, or my family... I thought I'd never finish but it seemed like in less than 2 years I was graduating with my College degree... (* It should be noted, that I uploaded to M J C's Yelp! Business/Scholastic/Education/ etc. listing here on Yelp!, the real-time photos of my diploma & a picture of me accepting I believe it was, my diploma after walking the process... They take much of the stress & angst out of applying for government financial aid too. I received emails informing me politely that I could apply for the upcoming "time-frame" of Student Aide Batches: I followed the prompts then, & ALWAYS PRINTED UP the finished application; once or twice annually just in case I needed to have a record of it for the schools records. I never needed to call upon my saved docs but I did continue to receive confirmations of monetary rewards/awards that I did qualify for. How do you obtain these funds? Well, for me, I had to signup & agree to have the funds transferred to the method of credit company of their selection. It was streamless & stressless. Don't delay in signing up for ALL that they offer; they are SO GENEROUS! I often felt unworthy of all they had to offer, but with time, I realized I was a good-honest person who desperately needed what M J C College was constantly offering to me, for the accepting... In closing today's Journal Entry I want to give a gentle yet firm, shout-out to Professor Bento; English Major Professor, who helped me more than any other English Professor and/or Teacher has. I'm sorry, he is JUST THAT UNIQUELY GENIUS & HUMBLE & LOVES CATS, thought I was a shoe-in for a solid/honest letter grade of an "A" but was shocked to learn of the letter-grade C instead. I'm grateful for successfully passing the course but still believe, that I did the work & diligently so, & I never missed any MANDATORY COURSEWORK or Classroom time, or assignments, +plus any Extra-Credit ( I believe there was EXTRA-CREDIT offered; if so I did it all successfully as well. MJC - Where Dreams Go To Die I went to MJC for over 7 years, trying (and trying) to get enough of the correct credits to transfer to a University. I was told the WRONG information by a guidance counselor there two or three times, so I ended up graduating with an AA degree, but never could transfer anywhere. I honestly believe the guidance counselors are paid to get students to STAY at MJC as LONG as they can... To be honest, I am autistic with ADHD, but I did eventually graduate MJC with a 3.4 GPA and I do have a high I.Q. So you'd think I could have gone to a University. Here are some of the things I experienced at MJC: The only really good thing about MJC: The bullying was over. I did have some friends there for a while. That was nice, but a lot of other things went very wrong... I wasn't getting anywhere the first time I went to MJC, so I left for a while and came back for the new computer program. I took robotics because I wanted to work for Disney building dark rides with animatronics. We spent an ENTIRE SEMESTER programming ONE robot ARM to move a small object two feet! NONE of the computer classes I took did a thing for me. Not Graphics, Not Robotics, Not Basic, Definitely Not DOS... I ended up getting my first Macintosh computer in 1992, and taught myself everything I know on it. But I could NEVER get a job doing ANYTHING I learned in any computer class at MJC! I also took cinematography. I seriously wanted to learn, but the other students treated it like the "easy" course, and the teacher let them, so I basically learned NOTHING from Cinematography. Then when I finally thought I could transfer, the counselor told me I still needed to take biology. I thought I could do that since I got straight A's in all the other science classes - Geology, Meteorology, etc. I even tutored some of the other students. But, the first day of the ONE Biology class available that semester, the teacher stands up in front of the huge room and tells us the following: "This is NOT an easy class. If you were thinking it was, sorry to disappoint you. It's not fun either. We will NOT be going to the beach and playing with dolphins. We will not be doing any field trips at all. You will be attending two-hour lectures, three days a week and three hour labs, and there is a LOT of book learning. It's hard work and FEW make it. MOST students leave before the semester is done. So if this is not for you, then I suggest you LEAVE NOW and NEVER RETURN!!" Due to my ADHD, after her harsh and unwelcoming introduction, I never returned. And that was it. No University for me, no high paying job, no enjoyable job ever... Thanks MJC! read more

Classes are amazing and great and usually the people are very nice. Many interesting things go on here. The one thing i would warn is BE CAREFUL WHEN PARKING ON CAMPUS (west)! I just got scammed out of 107$ for some bs ticket that i was never given a notice for or even mailed anything!! I called multiple times regarding it but i was told the equivalent of "nuh uh" and i wasn't even allowed to fight it. This mysterious parking ticket dates back to last year! It is honestly BULL!! They're just trying to milk money out of people with nonsense. To recap: Yes the environment is nice, the people are good, rarely any bad happens here- but the authority figures? Absolute crap. This school is a joke. They pretend they have a bunch of ways to helping students but they really don't. They are completely racist against white people. They only have help for you if you are African American or Hispanic. The teachers do not help you. They just want your money and won't let you get a refund or listen to your issues. It is super frustrating and sad. If you make money and work your butt off all your life, you aren't allowed to have any help. It is totally uncalled foe and any person that knows my situation, agrees with me. I am giving it 2 stars just from the nice students and janitors I have met here. This college sucks, they act like they have so many resources and ways to help students, but they don't. I was a student here for several years and I never got anywhere with my education being here. Counselors don't know what they're doing and don't help you achieve what you want for your educational goals. Nor do any of them even know what the proper courses to take for your major are and none of the staff were ever helpful and they are always rude. Teachers here are absolutely horrid as well, I never had but ONE teacher that actually cared about my education throughout the entire time I was enrolled here. I was a student at MJC in the late 90's. I enjoyed my time there - the classes, the instructors, the campus. It was a good choice for me after high school. Through my classes, I was offered a student employment position doing tech work in the theater department. That led me to procure a contract staff job which started my career at MJC. From theater, I moved to another department and started one of the best personal growth periods in my life. My co-workers, administrators, faculty, and students all have been wonderful to work with. I feel especially grateful to work for an institution who has personal and professional development at the heart of its mission. Indeed, MJC is not perfect, but we strive to provide the best possible experience for our students and guests. I'm incredibly proud of the work put in and the evolution MJC has undergone in the last four to five years to meet the needs of our community. Asked my counselor what would be the best courses to take to get my associates in nursing to get into medical sonography school. Was told "I don't know you'll have to figure it out" isn't that what a counselor is for? To help you set up classes to where you'll be able to take the next step? Garbage school. I was awarded an AA degree in April 2022, and still have yet to receive my printed diploma! MJC can't give me a status update, and said "it's possible it won't be mailed until the end of summer." Originally it was expected to take 6-8 weeks. If it's not mailed out until the end of summer, that's more like 14+ weeks to receive a printed diploma. This is holding me back from applying to jobs that require me to submit a copy of my diploma. MJC's solution is telling me to submit my official transcripts to potential employers instead. So if you're working toward a degree at MJC, be prepared for delays on top of delays once you finish. Dear MJC: The average time it takes other colleges to complete this process is 6 weeks. Your unexplained delays are unacceptable to students who have invested so much time and money into your institution. read more

So I attended this institution for longer than like to admit, and the time that I spent here really help shape the type of thinker/student/person that I am today. I always hear the common gripes about how MJC sucks, and to some extent there is some truth in that. But, buck up buttercup and get your classes done so that you can go some place better. The East campus itself is really nice, and some of the renovations have made it even better. There is a lot of history that I really enjoy about this campus, and there should be photos of the development of the college over the years. They used to be in the student center. This campus is covered in trees, and in between the Morris building and the student center is a large open area that I would always play frizz bee or some other throwing activity on. The parking situation is definitely better than when I first went here. The Instructors are good as well, at least the ones that I had. I did not treat this like high school, so I really got to know my instructors. This made my experience here so much better. The instructors here care a lot more about their students than the university professors that I had. They would spend the time that I needed to understand and grasp concepts. They would even meet off campus. Moreover, they are far more personable than the majority of professors that I had at UCSC. The educational value of MJC is a steal as well, although it is more expensive now than when I first started here. But, even acknowledging that, it is still less expensive than university level lower division classes. I had so much fun here when I attended. I wish I could do it over again, but life moves on. read more

Shame on you! MJC East is the old campus and while I realize that the new campus is being funded much better than the old. How could you possibly allow such poor maintenance of you facilities. I came on to a play on a Friday night just to discover that their box office does not open promptly, the outside of the building is in gross need of a proper cleaning, and the lighting in front of the building is inadequate. read more

I started attending Modesto Junior College immediately after being honorably discharged from the military and had absolutely no difficulty getting into classes that I wanted or needed. I understand this is more difficult for non-veterans, but for me, it worked out perfectly. The veterans services office ran more efficiently than any others I've encountered at the multiple colleges and universities I've attended in the past. There were plenty of class options that fit my schedule as I was both working full-time on a 12 hour night shift and going to school 1/2-3/4 time while also raising a family. I managed to get a degree and all of my prerequisites completed in time to apply for the Stanford School of Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) (also known as the Primary Care Associate Program) and was accepted. This program is highly selective, accepting only 50 of the sometimes thousands of applicants, and I was accepted the first time I applied. Once in the demanding two year PA program at one of the world's premiere medical schools, I realized how fortunate I was to have such gifted and dedicated profs and instructors for my science and math courses to help me prepare for the rigors of a challenging program. Their dedication and passion enabled me to benefit all the more from the academic experience I would later encounter. The humanities courses left me well prepared for the intensive critical thinking that is expected of a student in graduate-level scientific studies as well. Professors consistently took my ambitions and academic goals very seriously, offering additional office hours to coincide with my hectic life schedule. One professor even allowed me to take a full two weeks off from class shortly before finals to travel to Haiti after the earthquake in 2010 to do some desperately needed humanitarian and medical aid work; Upon returning, he made time to meet me at a cafe for a whole weekend to help me get up to speed again so that I would not just pass the final, but do exceedingly well in a subject with which I had historically struggled. Another MJC professor, after I had finished my educational goals at this institution and moved on, availed himself to help me write a superb cover letter for my application to Stanford. There are countless other examples of science instructors who were willing to lend their personal time and guide me to conquer personal and academic obstacles in some of the most demanding courses that MJC offers. Some notable examples are the Chemistry, Microbiology and the Anatomy program (which left me notably prepared for the rigors of a similar but very fast-paced anatomy program at Stanford University). If I were to describe my experience in a single sentence at MJC it would be: "The faculty at this school invested in me and helped me build on my strengths to succeed in the career of my dreams." If you plan to pursue an education in health sciences, I highly recommend this school. read more

MJC has been a great experience so far. I have had nothing but great professors. Professoressa Thorpe (Italian), Dr. Hamilton (Eng101), Jeff Anderson (Family Relationships), and Mr. Richard Vander Bosch (History102) are amazing! I highly recommend these teachers! The only bad thing about MJC is that classes are extremely hard to get into. Many of them are unavailable and when you are on the waitlist, spme teachers do not even let you in even though half the people drop out by the first month. read more

The overall quality of instruction is very good, and there seems to be sincerity in the teaching. The course offerings of the school are limited though. Although it may be technically possible to finish a degree in 2 years, the time frame is an illusion. Many core courses are only offered once every other year (if that). There are limited amounts of good teachers at this school. I was blessed to run across 2 of them. A spanish teacher Mr. Hoobyard, and a culinary instructor Chef Gary A.(can't remember spelling of last name). Other than them, I pretty much had some of the worst teachers, unable to teach properly and not willing to help. I even had a teacher by the name of Bob Glatt curse at me, call me names, and throw a cup of hot tea at me. The school allows teachers to get away with murder basically. It was reported all the way up to the president, and they did an investigation. Other students made complaints as well, because I was not the only one he assulted. This is by far one of the worst schools I have ever attended, and they deserve to have someone come in and investigate most of the teachers and actually fire some of them. Their online instructors are almost worthless as well. If the computer system is messed up, they don't care. If you answered right on a quiz, and the program still marks you wrong, the instructor tells you too bad. If one of the assignments didn't come up for you to do, they still tell you too bad. It is like a school that sets you up for failure. This will be my last semester at this school, because I refuse to waste my time and money at this place. I will happily move else where. read more

I attended here a couple years ago-the staff was extremely rude. I only had one teacher that seemed like he cared about the students. The rest treated us like pay checks. The two year transfer process took me 4 years, but my time spent there was really the only time I enjoyed being in Modesto. There's a plethora of informed and passionate faculty, and I'll go as far as to say the area is more than lucky to have some of the professors service the intellectual growth of its youth - Dr. Serros and Prof. Duchscher in particular. There are some great programs, some that could do with a bit of further development, but that comes down to funding and priorities - it makes more sense for a popular program like agriculture to get cash and attention than it would for something esoteric like animation, regardless of how super interesting it is. Over all, the people are nice, the facilities are up to par or better, and whilst there are some classes that do fit the 'extended high school' stereotype of community college, in the majority of my classes I was still challenged, and put in hard work for my good (and sometimes not so great) grades. read more

The book store staff at BOTH campuses are LAZY and INCOMPETENT!!! Don't even bother trying to get the items you need here. Prices are a rip for one, especially on the books. All I needed was a lab manual which is loose printed papers printed out and packaged together as a whole so you don't have to print out all the papers at home, which in the end is cost efficient because running your own printer at home to print over 250 pages costs a lot with paper and ink. So I will give them this, it's a good buy at like $10. However I was at West campus went to the bookstore was on my way and asked where it was because it had moved and someone in a blue shirt that obviously worked at MJC told me that the bookstore on that campus was only open for the first two weeks of the semester and this was now the third week of the semester. So then I proceeded to drive over to East campus where I went to the bookstore and waited for someone to finally asked me what I needed, I said I needed the lab manual and the connect plus and pointed at the class that I needed he didn't even read what I needed and said oh anatomy that's at the other campus and so then I explained I was sent here because they told me that the other campus bookstore was closed and he said no that's not the case so then I had to drive back all the way to West campus come to the bookstore only to find out that they are out of the Lab manual. So a lady who runs the bookstore told me well they should've told you that the other campus because that's the only place where you can special order it and pay for it there and then wait for it I said this is ridiculous I've been sent back-and-forth back-and-forth so I think it was a lady who runs the bookstore said she'll make it right for me and have it ready for me on Thursday well guess what I am sitting here in my car and it's Thursday morning I come in the same lady who was supposed to make it right for me was sitting there eat food and acting like she had no idea what I was talking about and then finally remembered and said oh yeah we don't have them mind you it's only paper that needs to be ran through a machine and package together and still couldn't get done and this was early afternoon Tuesday when it happened so they had the rest of Tuesday, all of Wednesday and then now it's Thursday morning and it was not done for me. this place is a joke and ridiculous did they do not truly care about students. That's my biggest pet peeve don't say you're going to make something right for somebody especially in customer service and not do it. Especially if it's for someone who is a student that's just trying to succeed in a course that they are taking on your campus that work at. WHAT A JOKE. so to say the least I will not be dealing with this incompetent staff ever again and will continue to print out my own labs at home out of my own pocket so be it. I've always had a good experience at MJC. I was able to get 12 transferable units right before Fall semester starts... so I'm good to go. I like the central location (East) and the facilities are good. Professors and instructors are good. Bookstore, good... Staff - good... Modesto Junior College is the oldest community college district (not school) in California history. It is the 16th oldest community college overall. My father attended back in the 1950s, so I guess attendance runs in the family. read more

How is it possible that MJC refused to provide student loans and denies the approval of privately funded loans?!? How did MJC justify this choice? The State of California funds community colleges, but MJC blatantly refused to provide funding to its students. "Currently MJC does not participate in the Direct Loan Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program or any of the Federal Family Loan Programs [e.g. Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL), including Federal Stafford Loan, Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), or Supplemental Loan for Students (SLS)]." Amazing nursing program! (Although I am not interested in nursing, I am into orthopedics/physical therapy).. Been working in the cadaver class, love my anatomy instructor Michele Monlux! I have had a great experience at MJC so far, all of my instructors( with the exception of a couple bad apples), have been great. Most of my instructors have all been excited about teaching, come up with fun different stories and ways of explaining what they are teaching. Engage students into discussions that require critical thinking. I even really like my math teacher, and I hate math ha she jokes around a lot and works hard to over-explain things in different ways so that everyone understands the material we need to know. Favorite instructors so far- bio 116: McInnes, English-Bruce Anders, Political Science- Steven Miller, Women's history- T Lunt, & Speech Comm. I would recommend this school! Great teachers, cheaper than a private J.C. and although counceling services are not that helpful---talk to the councelors at the school you are thinking of transferring to- they will help you! read more

This is a janky place. I'm only giving it any stars at all because I went there and graduated, plus one of my high school teachers is a professor there and he helped influence what I decided to major in. Had some issues with the Evaluations Office and them not giving me my degree because one of the student employees marked something off on my degree application with white out. No phone call, no email, no notice by paper. Nothing until I went in to pick up my degree a semester later and was told that my application was denied. I eventually did get my degree after several phone calls to different departments and signing paperwork. Of course, no one wanted to admit that they fckd up. All they had to do was apologize. I do it all the time working in customer service. Such an easy thing to do. I went in to pick it up just several months after everyone graduating that semester got theirs. The ladies in Evaluation were total biznitches about it too, one of them being a girl named Rosie and another one who wouldn't give her name. These people need to start wearing name tags so they can be accountable for their actions. Imagine going in and saying hi only to be met with an expressionless-faced 20-year old "adult" putting on mascara with one hand and holding a mirror in another not acknowledging that you're standing in front of her. That's what happened. Seeing as how Evals is right across from Records in the same building I'm surprised a real adult didn't say anything. Absolutely unprofessional. The financial aid office sucks here, no communication or organization. Granted, some of the professors are better than others, but that's a post for RateMyProfessor.com, so I'm not even gonna go there. I don't remember the names to all but two of the professors there. I don't expect them to know me either although I had joined clubs on campus and tried to be as active as I could. This is not the place to make friends. It's "only" a community college so people aren't as friendly. I guess there isn't an incentive for them. After taking a class with someone I usually never saw them again. There are supposedly 20k students enrolled here although you'd never be able to tell by the amount of foot traffic on campus. If you have the chance just enroll at CSU Stanislaus. It's a wayyy better school with better department staff members and their student assistants are really friendly. The professors are not perfect, but at least personable. They've actually tried to keep in touch after the semester is over and they try to memorize your name. Some of the professors here teach at both colleges. I was happier than ever to transfer there. It's overall more professional. The atmosphere is different. read more

Have really enjoyed going to college here. Came here right after high school and was easily able to get classes. The teachers want you to do your best, but definitely check with friends and teacher rating sites to find out about your teachers before you register for them, because you will not find good teachers by guessing. read more

I've been a student here for 6 years. For my last semester I need to take physics. MJC will not let me take physics without taking a preliminary physics class that they only offer once a year (even though I've completed Calculus). After they denied my appeal, I now have to drive four times farther to take Physics at Merced College so I can move on. I am disappointed and frustrated because MJC has made college life unnecessarily difficult for me. Hence, this 1 star review. Just to add, classes are always full before my registration date allows me to register every semester. This is bothersome considering I have 60+ units, in good standing and have zero priority. It just makes it harder for you when you're trying to finish up and transfer. read more

Track use only: I love using the track and bleachers. It's convenient, clean, communal, and casual! Between seeing friendly faces from around town and the neighborhood to the events and training goings ons, it can get busy and some times crowded, even. But any time is a good time for use. They have great classes and sports facility use with clubs and classes. Just being out and about with friendly like minded and focused people is a happy bonus to staying healthy. Speaking of bonuses, there's always the chance of stumbling onto events and happenings on campus and from word of mouth. Great use of public funds read more

I had no idea this was here really cool. Very educational. It's small place on West MJC campus. It's full of taxidermy animals, plant replicas, fossils. It's a science mueseum with interactive areas full of sound n questions pertaining to the exhibit. There's kids play area and small gift shop. Only complaint is parking. It's a JC people if you haven't been to one it's not easy to find a spot and the free ones are a very long walk to the museum little ones don't like that. read more

I've read many other reviews from people and first must say, when it comes to an educational institution, basically you get back what you put in. HOWEVER, I had an awful instructor who made my spring semester a living hell. She literally was terrible to me! Then I had one other professor the same semester who was a life savior I am so grateful for her. I suppose many teachers just don't care. read more

As an alumni, it was great. The professors were good and it was the key to launching me to a successful career at Sacramento State.

Last July I took the Cooking Through a Cookbook class with Community Education. The whole experience was great. We learned how to make a new dish every night. You never went home hungry and there were even leftovers. read more
