Desserts were allegedly from the Dutch Costco, Sligro (nephew and cook Stijn confirmed their origin), the Portuguese fish soup was lukewarm and very un-fishy and the quiche was decidedly rubbery. Better burgers are available at any In-N-Out in the US, likely also at Nations and Burger King, any day. So if you're tempted to walk down the super charming Schinkelkade and settle for some time at Van Mechelen (named after a Belgian town with a superior food culture), enjoy a drink and bitterballen instead. Until they guarantee that the cook of the day is older than 18 and trained for his job, forgo dinner - and maybe have a pannenkoek elsewhere.

It was just a bit unfortunate that I was the only one in my group who wanted to, but a delight nevertheless. The two negative points for us is that (1) the place is pretty dim at night and (2) all of our dishes were cool when it got to us. Lighting was low enough that we all took out our phones in order to read the menu and food was cool that I'm pretty sure they'd been left out to sit for a while. But nothing could be further from the truth. The food was excellent, the service was respectful but low key and the chairs offer the utmost comfort. I've returned to this restaurant many times over the years and spent long evenings relaxing in those comfortable chairs, enjoying great food, great conversation and feeling very spoilt. I invariably choose a three or four course menu, which changes daily. It's a nice way to try something I might not have chosen from the a la carte menu. I was here again very recently. Fortunately nothing has changed. If I were to make one criticism it is that the house red wine is meant as an aperatif and is not really suited to any of the dishes.
