This is only 5 minutes south of the freeway and worth a stop to do the driving tour. I was just in Arizona a couple of days ago where I got to drive past the Pinal Airpark https://www.yelp.com/biz/pinal-airpark-marana?hrid=a-xcCVV7IN5C2fdhITaMlw which is quite full of parked aircraft. Mojave is more of the same, just a bit further away. There is a spot saved on Google Maps called "Airplane Graveyard Viewpoint" but you'll need to park your vehicle and walk a half mile through the desert to get to there. I wasn't interested in that since I'm not prepared for snakebites or security patrols or any of that nonsense. Instead, you can drive along Rosewood Blvd to where it dead ends near Kemira Water Solutions and see pretty well. Lots of colors and liveries on display here. Nowhere in the world can you you see past, present and future so vividly. As the name suggests, the Mojave Air & Space Port has all three in evidence. First and foremost, the airport/spaceport is the worlds hub for the infant civilian space movement. Home to Virgin Galactic and it subsidiary The Spaceship Company, it is where they hope to kick a new type of travel called space tourism. Based on a a mothership carrying the suborbital spaceplane up to about 60000 feet then using the rockets on the spaceplane to place it in suborbit. We were fortunate to be able to see the Scaled Composites Model 348 White Knight Two (WK2) lift the Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo sub orbital vehicle on a test launch. The launch was successful and the space plane got as high as the mesosphere in this test before returning safely back tot he spaceport. It is also home to the Scaled Composites Stratolauncher. The aircraft is one of the worlds largest and has a maximum takeoff weight of 1.3 million pounds. It was a bit shy and did not come out of its hanger for our visit. It is an active airfield and you do get to see some interesting aircraft flying in and out. The past is a bit sadder however. The airfield is a boneyard as well. From the highway you can easily make out the tails of once proud aircraft waiting to be destroyed. They slowly get parted out to keep other planes flying and eventually the carcass is broken down for scrap. A few are maintenance in flight worthy condition. You will also see active planes being parked int he desert. Sometime the airlines has excess capacity, other times the price of fuel dictates that its not profitable to fly and it will wait till a drop occurs. The hot dry climate helps prevent corrosion and helps to preserve the air frames. Its another one of those spots that is cool to see for a bit, but unless you are really into aviation, its a quick stop and then move on. read more

I love airplanes and space exploration so I had to stop by here on the way to Death Valley. No tours available unfortunately but you can visit the gift shop, eat at the restaurant and inside the restaurant you can walk outside and take a view of the airport. They have an airplane boneyard but you must be interested in buying airplane parts to enter. Neat for kids to see airplanes used by NASA (parked in the front). Nice friendly staff and plenty of visitor parking. read more

So we were Staying at thousand trails Near Palmdale California. One of the campers told us about the aerospace stuff going out in Mojave so we decided to take a drive up and look. The kids are in civil air patrol and three of them have their student pilots licenses and they have a keen interest in anything to do with aerospace, astronauts, and just plain old flying. There is a nice old jet graveyard, however we were not allowed to go to it. Since there's a lot of research and development going on in Mojave, we kind of were not allowed to go into anywhere. At one point we saw a sign guests please check in building 210. So we went into the building and we were immediately met by some security guards, and some military personnel that were armed. We were informed that this place was off-limits LOL. We were escorted out. When I told them that sign said for visitors to check in, I was told that we were not that type a visitor. Lots of hush-hush stuff going on apparently. But the kids still had fun. The kids did get to see The Rotary Rocket Roton display at Legacy Park along with the SpaceShip One and Voyager replicas. They were on display near some tesla charging stations. Just before leaving we found the Viyager café. It's kind of funny because above the door, saying Aviation spoke in here. It's quite funny since my kids are all in the Aviation area, there's a lot of Aviation spoken but I do not understand. What about the only building we were allowed to enter was the spaceport itself. There is a really tiny, and when I say tiny I mean like really small gift shop. It was a secretary, and to the right of her desk was a table with some items, and as you walk in the door there were some sweatshirts and T-shirts. There are also stickers, decals, keychains etc. Very expensive as you would imagine. For the Cafe...Unfortunately the café was closing when we went in, the waitress was extremely nice and allowed me to sit and have some water while cleaning up. I think it was about 110° outside. He also offered us a couple of large to go cups of water. A table next to me had some food and it looked really good, however I cannot comment on the deliciousness of it. I was able to get some pictures of the menu for any who are interested. The menu is aeronautically-inspired. read more

I think the security guard who works in the tower might have been stoned when I called. I called from about 20 miles away and asked, are you guys open to the public? She said, yes of course I'm the only one here. I said, okay I will be out there shortly. She said great. When I arrived I found the restaurant door open and the server trying to close shop. She was kind enough to reach out to the security guard. No luck, but she said why don't you call her back. so I called the security guard back, and of course she answered on the first ring. I explained that I have arrived and she acted as though we had never spoken. I told her I was waiting downstairs in the restaurant, and she said well you should probably leave so that they can close. The whole experience was really pretty surreal. read more

Simply driving around the Mojave, you notice that the evolving land itself is metaphor for human resolve, some of the most inhospitable land on earth now redefined by transforming its inherent problems into sustainable opportunities. Too much heat and sun actually means abundant energy. A lot of empty space actually means you can land your spaceship here. A huge section of this airport is a graveyard for planes, commercial and cargo airliners, old jets & helicopters that have done their time in the skies or have been recalled and grounded for life. No access is granted to see them up close unless you're there for the yearly air-show. read more

Awesome reasonably priced food, nice views of the aircraft flying around - I once saw the experimental Stratolaunch flying around the airport while having breakfast - The waitress is super nice, efficient, funny and friendly. Their salmon sandwich and 1000 dollar burger are delicious and nicely presented. I always come to this place when in Mojave because it is well worthy. read more

Come here every third Saturday of the month to see plane fly-in and displays. Have lunch at the voyager restaurant and watch planes taking off and landing. While coming home from an Adventure up north, I was driving home on the 14 freeway. I spotted a large collection of airplanes, parked and unattended in the desert. Curious, I made a mental note, and journeyed my way home. After some research later on, I discovered the existence of this place. I tacked it onto my already planned Antelope Valley Adventure, and waited for a time to go. Recently I took a spontaneous adventure, and made my way up to Mojave. An hour or so in the car got Schoolteacher and I up to the Space Port. I was excited to be here, and really hoped there was something cool to see and experience. Turns out there's not actually that much here. A small park, and broken visitor information screen are all that wait for travelers coming here. The park is fairly small, but does seem to be still under construction. Located within the park there is a MineCart, replica of SpaceShip One, a one quarter scale model of the Rutan Voyager, and a Rotary Rocket. Mind you, all very cool items made famous in the local area. The idea of this place is absolutely unfathomably cool. This is the veritable first stepping stone into the next frontier. To boldly go where no man has gone before actually happens right here in this very location. Unfortunately, in actuality, it's an airport in the desert with a small restaurant. Their refrigerator magnets aern't even that cool. There is also an airplane graveyard out by the runways, and they've also got days during the week where events happen. Okay, I must have driving nearby this place 100 times on my way up to the Eastern Sierra! Always from afar and I've always been curious, so this time, we ventured into the public area where we found a lot of old planes, rockets, and aerospace stuff. Much of it propped up along the streets for you to check out. Obviously, no longer in operation, but pretty interesting nonetheless. Nearby is the "graveyard" as many call it, but from my understanding a lot of these planes are either in transition or are used parts. What fun it would be to do the old "pick-a-part" hunt trying to find that gun turret or an ejection seat to use as the centerpiece in your man cave! Looks like there's a lot more to do around here, but it's already too hot and windy, so maybe I'll be back another day with the family. Roger this! read more

I was visiting the Tehachapi train loop and saw their was an air show here so made the surprisingly short drive. I am so glad I did! Great place to see all kinds of private, historic, or experimental aircraft including a lot of mothballed planes. I had forgotten that three Mythbusters episodes were filmed here. A local told me the air shows happen frequently (every other week?) so you may be as lucky as I was. Definitely worth a visit. read more

It was weird, and kinda creepy, because there was no one else there except for a ton of unmarked white government vehicles, and we thought we were gonna be knocked out or abducted by aliens or something. It was a wild, unique experience. They have a restaurant, a rotary rocket, and tons of planes on display. I definitely want to go back when the place is actually open. read more

UFO, Privateers, Pilots.. land land land... its a regular airport with so much more to offer, including jet research, parts, bone yard jet part pickings, dry air storage and so much more. There is here a lot more to meet the eye. The only problem is how to view the place, and the best I could see it is from outside a 10' cyclone fence. I took a bunch of photos, but to protect plane owners, I am not sharing them. Just kidding, it seems nobody cares... I just don't see how to get inside. read more

Lovely staff. Such a neat slice of Americana. Saturday mornings is a super neat "fly in". A variety of private, military, and other planes are on display on the grounds. The local booster club is very welcoming, provides tours, and has neat memorabilia for sale. read more

Visited here on Saturday which happened to plane crazy The 3rd Sat of each month. You go into the four corners turn East and you can't miss a big old DC8 sitting on the corner of Airport Blvd. Drove in saw the legacy park with memorials to dead test pilots and the one and only Roto Rocket. Got to see a super sonic trainer a handful of fighter jets and about thirty old 747 400's parked way out from several carriers like ANA Quantas and Atlas. Had a nice lunch in the Voyager Restaurant which is filled with local memorabilia even a signed pic of Chuck Yeager at one time the fastest man on the planet. Good food nice people. After lunch drove over to a taxi way and watched an unmarked 47 land and taxi by. Also a big ol L10-11 Tristan that Orbital ATk apparently uses to launch resupply rockets to the ISS. National Test Pilot school is here too. A guided tour would have been great and some stories of great moments that have happened here but all in all a great afternoon. First went to this airport years back for CQB training using the aircraft bone-yard there. If you drive by today the planes are still lined up. Some just parked and "mothballed" while others being disassembled for parts. Some movies are shot there as well. Voyager and Virgin SpaceShipOne are from here. This airport is registered as a "Spaceport". There are some cool "fly-ins" too. Great restaurant too. read more
