I am so thankful we have our local Meadows Field Airport. There really is no better start to any trip than their easy check in and hassle free, small airport feel. The most I've ever waited was 20 min to go through TSA. I do recommend still arriving early in case there are delays since they only have one TSA check in station. I really enjoy not having to drive or get a ride to LA or Fresno to catch a flight. Even if you can't fly direct to your final location, you can sometimes find some solid connections from nearby CA travel hubs like San Francisco & LAX, as well as other major airports such as Phoenix or Denver. read more

You have to love being able to fly out of the city where you live. Meadows Field is very convenient. While the cost of a flight might be a little more than if you fly out of Burbank or LAX, there are other costs associated with driving an hour and half to two away (and parking costs) that makes it much more cost effective to fly out of Bakersfield. Whether using AA or United, I find the staff pleasant and courteous. The facilities are clean. I recently flew to Phoenix for under $300 RT. Oh, also they have a great gift shop where you can purchase Bakersfield merch! The more people who house Meadows Field will result in better offerings, so keep flying out of Bakersfield! read more

Okay. I'm really a big fan of our local airport. Nothing beats getting off the tarmac, collecting luggage and to your car in less than 10 minutes... And in bed in 30? YES please! Yes, the prices are still a little more expensive than LAX. But when you factor in things like parking, gas, and time - you're almost always better off. Layovers typically are in San Fran, Denver, Phoenix, or Dallas - which are all major hubs. I do wish they'd expand to have more flights. Maybe sometime soon! read more

I'm a locally based frequent flyer and start 1/3 of my trips here & 2/3's at LAX. When the new terminal was built almost 20 years ago BFL had 25-30 flights a day & Airport Bus of Bakersfield had 6 or 8 trips to LAX. BFL has been at 8-12 flights a day since the America West-American Airlines merger. About half the flights are big jets and half smaller regional jets. Things to watch - 4 of the flights depart with 75 minutes 05:15 to 6:30 , so things bunch up. If checking bags, 75 minutes before flight time, carry on only 50 minutes. As few flights are spread out , the rest of the day it is not uncommon to find no airport personnel at the counter, and no way to summon them. When it's close to flight time, the gate agents go inside the building. The only sure way is to come to the counter 30 to 90 minutes before a flight departure. (Really BFL- use should have some type of call system so airport or airline personnel know someone needs attention. ) For drop off one gets 15 minutes free parking! Short and long term parking rates are much better than LAX . I've had good luck with car rental, as long as you reserved. Walks ins are hit or miss. Small planes get delayed more than large ones and last 2-3 years my on time experience is good. Prices to my destinations are closer to LAX than ever. Certainly markets and destinations work well, others do not. With less frequency than LAX , if there is a tight connection I will opt to book through LAX for more flexibility. Food and bev services are minimal. read more

Having an airport in Bakersfield is great and convenient! It was so easy to get there and know where to go because of the signs. In front of the entrance are only for taxis and drop offs but I didn't see any security personal out front and there were a few cars just parked and waiting to pick up their family/friend. Maybe because to park in the short term parking you have to insert a credit card. Although the first 15 minutes are free, im sure people don't want to go through that hassle. Maybe if there were airport lounges, people would park and relax inside. read more

The vibe to this airport is very "Tom Nevers Field" (Wings tv show) and I say this as a compliment. The staff is very warm and sincere. Everything is tidy and well-organized. I used to use the airport bus to take me to LAX to then fly me out to JFK regularly. Which was taxing, to say the least and pricey. I hate driving so when the airport bus transport became unavailable, I had to drive the two plus hours and pay additional for long-term parking, which is an added expense. Initially, the airfare at MFA was very expensive and I can understand why--small airport, few airlines, convenient. But I will say that the prices are now pretty reasonable, if you book in advance. I have been traveling from MFA pretty consistently for the past five years, although I have forgotten to check in. Last January, I left my pocketbook-wallet in the seat receptacle in the plane upon exiting the plane and the airport staff held it for me to retrieve it and everything--my ID, a large amount of cash, cards--was all intact. That is really commendable. Going back to my opening statement, given the small-town atmosphere of MFA, you're never sure if you'll run into someone you know and I always do and have! read more

I thought if I take the earliest flight be less crowded, however during that time it's busy . When I check in they ask if I was by myself and I said yes , come to find out they ended up bumping to aisle seating which is lots of foot room , They random pick single passenger to be in the aisle to assist if there's an emergency, that was awesome. I have never flown into Bakersfield, always opting to make the drive up from Southern California, so after countless trips to Bakersfield, this was my first time actually using the airport. I flew in from San Francisco, one of four cities that fly into Bakersfield. The flight from SFO to BFL was $300. A pretty steep price, but that's what happens when you fly into a tiny airport. There's only one flight per day that travels from SFO to BFL so hopefully it works for your timing. When we arrived, it took maybe 3 minutes to get from the plane to the curb. This is a tiny airport and it's so nice to be able to just walk straight out. Unfortunately, the bathrooms weren't open in the terminal, which felt like quite the ghost time at 8pm. My understanding is that ubers aren't allowed to pick up at the airport due to county regulations. I'm not positive on this, but I thankfully didn't need this service. read more

Meadows Field Airport is a terrible airport. American Airlines allowed me to miss my flight scheduled for 6:02am departure. I didn't arrive early enough for my prepaid baggage drop. I proceeded to wait in line (skipped by others) for baggage drop. American Airlines rescheduled my flight to 7:00pm (12 hours later). After giving them my bag, I proceeded through TSA (rude TSA agents) to watch my original flight (6:02am) take off AN HOUR later. It gets better (SARCASM). I was kicked out of the terminal into the airport lobby lol due to "closure" until the afternoon flights. I stayed in the lobby and did not proceed through TSA to enter the terminal. I was informed another "closure" will occur and open at 5pm. Let's see if I make my 7:00pm flight. Meadows Field Airport is by far my worst experience in my flight endeavors. read more

It takes very little to impress me in an airport, and this little airport impressed me. It is very clean, even the gentlesir's restrooms, which often look worse than the Greyhound bus terminals in most big city airports. The TSA agents were not just polite, but actually friendly. Every big city airport I go through I feel like I barely get through the line without being told to go fornicate myself. But not here. The waiting areas at the terminals are clean, there is no gum stuck to the armrests or anything like that. No half-eaten sandwiches just left out and rotting on the seats like seems to happen at my local airport. Even the airline personnel at the gate are not just polite, but actually friendly. The only thing wrong with the whole picture is that it is in Bakersfield. However, compared to landing at LAX, this is the one you want to head to Sequoia, Solvang, Big Sur, or somewhere else interesting with LA (and Bakersfield) in the rearview after landing here. read more

First time flying out of this airport! I normally go down to LA for LAX but I thought this time I'd try out BFL and it was a great experience! Flight was at 9am and I was able to leave my house at 8am, go through TSA, and be seated at my gate already. Love that this airport doesn't have high foot traffic, I was able to get through really quickly! Very clean airport and very very friendly staff :'). Terrible experience. We landed and sat on the runway for 30 minutes, United was not allowed to taxi to a gate and unload. No reason was ever given. The United flight also had no Wi-Fi it was broken . This airlines is going into bankruptcy or the toilet. Avoid this airport and airlines.? Found out United only has one gate here because airport staff and cuts . Meadows Field Airport aka KBFL is a medium sized airport that serves the community and and around the City of Bakersfield, California. Its two runways are 7 and 10,000 feet reflecting its former use as an Army Air Corps base. While it has a commercial terminal, its a pretty quiet airport and we mostly fly in and out for medical transports. From that perspective, its lower traffic makes getting in and out easy, the only caveat is that the taxiways are quote long so it can take some time to get to and from the terminal to one of the runways. read more

It's my second time flying out of this airport and it's been a pleasant experience both times. Very quick TSA check in, with virtually no wait times or lines, and there is ample short-term and long-term parking available. The airport is very small but it runs efficiently. My flights have left and arrived on time and the staff I interacted with was courteous. The only thing is the flights have been SO early! It would be great to have more options! read more

I was fortunate to fly in from Dallas- Fort Worth Texas to Bakersfield. And just wow! Wow! It was soooo convenient. And the airport is super clean and quiet. The staff is friendly and helpful. And they are practicing social distance, providing hand sanitizer and wiping down areas as needed. Recently took a trip to North Carolina and it was cheaper to fly out of BFL than it was LAX (crazy!) It was my first trip out of BFL so I went in not knowing what to expect but it went pretty well. Security staff was friendly and clear with instructions, American Airlines staff were very friendly and got us checked in and our bags off without issue. Airport including the bathrooms were clean and well maintained and everything ran on time, can't ask for much more. I was really happy with the experience and had no issue leaving my car in the long term parking for 5 days. I'd happily fly out of BFL anytime. read more

DO NOT USE ENTERPRISE RENTAL CARS HERE!!!! I got to the rental place 20 mins early. Had the guy at enterprise check if my rental was ready. He said I wasn't even on the list. So I checked with the other two rental places thinking maybe I messed up who I rented with. Turns out, IT WAS ENTERPRISE ORIGINALLY. I asked him to check my name again, and he saw it. I asked why he didn't see my name to begin with, and he said it was MY fault since I should have said the EXACT car rental time. He said he was going to cancel my rental since I was being rude, in which he did cancel it. I am appalled, disgusted, and ashamed of the customer service I received. I didn't catch his name, but he was working the 9am-10am block on July 27th, 2025. Shaking my head, enterprise. Do better. read more

Seeing as this is my hometown airport, it's nice to be able to fly without having to drive to LAX. It is usually a bit more expensive when it comes to tickets but it's the convenience that works for me. This airport is small but it is well maintained and kept clean. The people are friendly and helpful. I really have no complaints when it comes to this airport. Minus 1 star because there isn't a variety of food. Just a small gift shop with some snacks. Benefit is that the airport is small so you don't have to be there super early for your flight, an hour and a half should suffice given you don't have any issues with your luggage. Heads up, since the planes are small, any rolling luggage has to be left before you step on the plane and loaded separately. You pick up your bag when you deplane after the flight. If you have laptops and such, it's best to bring a backpack or something you can fit underneath the seat in front of you or in the small overhead compartment. read more

A good start for a small airport, but it needs work in terms of connectivity. First, there are very limited AA/UE flights out of BFL, basically only to DFW, SFO, DEN, and PHX. A Vegas option sure would be nice, even if it's only one flight in either direction per day (Allegiant offers such an option out of Fresno). Second, there are no public transit options to BFL. The GET 22/45 bus routes stop close to, but not at, the terminal, and GET stubbornly refuses to adjust the route, despite it being called to their attention. I agree with the general comments previously that it's probably cheaper for one passenger to fly out of BFL versus LAX, however not for a family of 4. But since the "Airport Valet Express" service has been discontinued from Bakersfield to LAX (see its separate Yelp page), Bako residents have few easy ways to get to LAX anymore. A "half way" solution for Bakersfield passengers heading to LAX is to use the Van Nuys FlyAway bus, at 7610 Woodley, Van Nuys ($9.75, with parking at $5/day). Driving all the way to LAX is insane, not to mention long-term parking is also very expensive. Addressing the concerns above would enhance passengers overall experience flying in/out of BFL. read more

Free WiFi, no crowds, and some food service. For someone who has flown out of Inyokern(IYK - much smaller airport), and also suffered the 405 to fly out of LAX, BFL is a very pleasant experience. Just for perspective, I have flown over a million miles and to almost every continent (south pole is still on my bucket list). I have experienced the highs and lows of air travel. BFL is one of those "easy places", like Boise Airport, big enough to have some services, but not so large it's painful to drive to and over ran with agitated & frustrated travelers. As for prices, American Airline (via Phoenix) to El Paso was expensive - $243 - one way, (if you want to pick your seat, that's $33 more per leg -$66 total, and $25 per check bag, so $91 vs $103 for 1st class upgrade was an easy decision). United surprisingly cheap - $85 - to return. read more

Living in Bakersfield we have pretty close access to airports in LA as well as Fresno. Both options are cheaper than Bakersfield for sure. Everyone knows that LAX is the cheapest but it is also a pain in butt to get to and the lines are crazy long. Once you factor in everything is flying out of LAX actually cheaper? You have to leave early and account for traffic(which sucks) as well as wait times to get to your gate. You have to pay someone to drive you and pick you up unless you are willing to pay to park your car there. When you get back you are still a good hour and a half to 2 hours away from home. After considering all that the wifey and I decided it was worth it to pay the extra 200$ a pop to fly out of Bakersfield. Our flight was at 6 am. We didn't have to leave home until 5:30. We were in line and through security in about 10 minutes. The airport does have One gift shop before entering the security check and one small cafe once you pass through. Options are limited but I think there were only about 50 people there for that flight so you can't expect an abundance of options considering only a few 100 people are using this airport daily. Facility along with the bathroom was clean. Tip: the plane was a lot smaller than ones at other airports. Although my bag has never had any issues fitting on other planes. They did have me check it here for free because the compartments are smaller. All in all definitely worth the extra $ to not have to leave so early , pay for parking and have an exhausted drive home after vacation. read more

My wife and I arrived at Bakersfield airport (BFL) on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 430 am for a 530 flight to Dallas connecting to Little Rock (LIT) AR. With an assigned seat and was told by a very rude American Airlines employee that I was too late to make my flight. She said I was supposed to arrive two hours early instead of one hour. Nowhere did I see this as being a mandate and to stand by and she would book me on the next flight. There were ten other people she did this to also. She would not allow us to proceed. That did not happen because there was no connecting flight that day. This all happened because of the actions of this very rude and cold careless employee. about us missing our flight. There is no one at this airport to help you or to call at this time or anytime because no one answers the phone. The airport needs to get some customer service. This is the worst customer service at any airport I have ever been to and I have traveled all over the world. read more

Rude. Once we missed our flight the clerk immediately was rude for no apparent reason. We were stunned but not angry, but he immediately reacted very uncaring and rude. When we experienced difficulties at LAX with our flight being delayed the experience was actually much more appreciated and caring from the staff. read more
