Fourth job with Momentum. I will continue using them for electrical work going forward. They are precise and thorough!

I have a small-medium sized project to add primarily low voltage wiring to the bedrooms in our house (ethernet/fiber/speaker wire/blind power/control) and swap out 135 light fixtures with new ones. I spent a few months working with Matthew and Thomas in the end and I had a really poor experience that I'd like to share here so I can save folks like me time in the future. I couldn't help but feel the job was outside of their scope and abilities so I asked a few times but was assured it was within their capabilities. In the end, I received the most unreasonable quote I've received in my life for any type of work/purchase. I spent some time trying to understand the quote, but the pricing at Momentum is non transparent and the owner/project managers are unable to communicate with their customers. The bid came in at: $353,869. I've attached photos of it in the review for transparency. I've had it quoted by others and the actual job cost is expected to be in the 125k range. I spent a few weeks specifically on the quote to replace the 135 light fixtures. A seperate drywaller was going to remove all of the ceilings in the house and replace them after the work was done. The fixtures are being replaced one for one and the wiring is all in place already. The quote for 135 fixtures from momentum was $86,581.41 or $641 per fixture. Their quoted rate is $140 an hour which works out to 5 hours per fixture. I've since had the same work quoted by others and all have quoted 1 hour per fixture or $140. On this particular item, their quote is 4.5x the industry normal. I spent time on the phone with Tom, the owner, and he expliained that he has a policy with the folks doing his quotes that if he ever loses money, he'll fire them because in the past he has had some jobs where he lost money. This was the explanation he gave me for the quote, on the call which was an escallation to discuss the quote, it was clear he hadn't even looked at it. Matthews explanation was given the finishes in my house, this is how much it would cost. I reminded him the ceiling would be removed with full access to all of the fixtures and the finishing would be done by someone else. I never got a response so I took my business elsewhere. When you look at the quote, make note of this comment: "- Bid assumes all work areas are open and accessible; done by others. " - Access to door/window/frames/casings/decking done by others. All of the challenging work was to be done by others. Also note this at the end of the quote: "Trash removal, dumpster, and debris container fees." For $353,000, they don't clean up after themselves. I don't understand all of the positive reivews of this company which were ultimately what lead me to reach out to them to consider the job. read more

I had an issue that was probably caused by former contractors - not being an electrician, I reached out to two electrical contracting companies - Momentum first and another guy 2nd. The 2nd guy responded immediately and came out and he was a disaster (see my review of Williams Electric). Momentum called a few hours later and Matthew, their foreman rang me later on. He showed up the next day to scope out the work, was able to identify one of the issues immediately, determined that my home was in no danger of frying, and made an appointment to come out after the weekend (this was a Friday). On the appointed day, he showed up an hour early and spent about half an hour fixing the issue at hand, and then a few more hours correctly identifying and professionally labeling every circuit in our home (50-year-old home and several remodels = lots of mismarked circuits). I am super impressed with this Momentum especially with the technician, Luis. My elderly parent's fan wires popped and there was a burning smell. Momentum did a wonderful job! We had two EV chargers installed for two separate apartments, located 80 feet from the meters, and each connected to a different meter (three if you include the extra outlet we added). Every vendor had a different take on the project, but Momentum delivered exactly what we needed, which was somewhat unique. Nightmare in every way. CSLB report is in, it is available anyone asking. Our simple remodel, which involved picture lighting being installed, water heater and basic outlets installed, adding some basic can lighting and under cabinet lighting. Nothing too complicated or odd. Under the supervision of a foreman with a serious drug problem, who due to human kindness shall remain nameless, Momentum's team pulled existing wiring our of our walls, removed existing outlets without rhyme or reason, removed wall switches, phone lines and cable connections. Although drywall and ceilings were removed FOR MONTHS, the wiring often wasn't installed until after the walls and ceiling went in. Almost every day we would walk into our home and find holes in the walls and ceilings as the various teams under various "foremen" tried to figure out what had happened before them. Despite many reminders, they forgot to put in the wiring for the kitchen under- cabinet lighting - this necessitated putting the wiring and control panel under our house in a damp crawl space and the switch in the cabinet behind the garbage disposal. BUT, they put in the wrong wiring and removed the whole wiring and replaced it with...wait for it...a second batch of wrong wiring. Now we have lighting, but the wrong kind. (We didn't know this until the end.) In the end, Thomas Gellis, the owner, sat in our parlor, told us he would finish the job without further charge ( due to our "pain and suffering" ...his words) and send an independent electrician from another company to hook up and explain the complicated new remote system and return when the house was finished to complete the installation. He also agreed to reimburse us for an outside second opinion to assure that the work was safe and assist in deciphering what fixtures and outlets were connected where. The programming guy Greg from DiLuzio Electric came for two days and was supposed to come back when the house was in order. We now have light switches taped with masking tape to our walls. Mr. DiLuzio says that their technician Greg was on his own time with a side deal with Thomas, although he was in a DiLuzio van and wearing a DiLuzio uniform. and had made the arrangement with an outside supervisor who does consult work. ... Mr. DiLuzio appears to be covering his rear...I don't know any business that has a staff member schedule a side deal with an outside contractor for the same business and use company resources for two days...but everything around this is surreal. He threatened to sue us if we contacted him ( documentation available upon request.) Every single aspect of the job "fixed' by the last foreman, Douglas, was tagged as either code violation or substandard.( Documentation available upon request.) After seven months of jerry-rigging the job together we heaved a sigh of relief and contacted Thomas to coordinate the independent coming back. We needed him to sign a release of lien and looked forward to ending the nightmare. The lien was not legal. It was then that he called and told us he was demanding more money and was going to put a lien on or home. We were stunned. He claimed he didn't remember what he said. He acknowledged that we had been misled by Nathan. No amount of good faith on our part, patience and understanding was returned. In the end, he acted the victim. He only showed up when there was a problem or we called on him. He often contradicted his staff. He was aware of problems for months and over 100 emails were sent. Anyone involved in issues regarding the Nathan, Douglas , Thomas and Momentum please contact us. We will share emails , documents,and photos and need the same. We are shattered and broken by this nightmare. Update: a week later- kitchen outlets found to be faulty. Update: Two contractors suggested the reason the copper wire was removed from our walls was to sell the copper for money ...one mentioned ( without prompt) that "drug addicts often do this." We have no idea if this is the reason...but there was never a reason given. Update: One month later and the kitchen outlets seem to be connected to one another- against code and without dedicated circuits. Can't use the oven and dishwasher. Update- faulty wiring eliminated power to all bedrooms. office, hall, outside lighting. Even the inspector from the Contractor's Board refused to trip the fuses when he saw how they were wired. We are making the CSLB report available to ANYONE who asks. Any layman will be invited to tour our home and see the report and damages. I had a few major production expansion projects at our warehouse and Momentum Electrical's staff; Bryce, Enrique, and Matthew went above and beyond on their part to ensure we met all of the electrical upgraded needs. Not only were they timely, knowledgeable, and pretty flexible around our active production space, but they took the extra steps to partner with our new equipment install contractors to ensure the electrical tie-ins were accurate according to specs. Working with Bryce and Matthew on the PM side was refreshing. The open line of communication between the teams allowed for spot on and quick resolutions when problems arose or to make any last second changes to scope if they occured. Than we have Enrique, the on-site technician, who was more than helpful, worked great with our installation team, offered smarter resolutions to some of the electrical demands we had and was all around attentive to our staff. We had 3 ceiling fans installed in separate rooms and we had recessed gimbal lighting put in a vaulted ceiling in a separate room with a Caseta switch and Pico wireless remote. Mathew was knowledgeable, friendly and a pleasure to do business with. It was anticipated that there would be a need to cut into ceiling sheetrock and we would then need to complete the patching and repair. Ultimately the momentum crew were able to get the work done without damaging the existing sheetrock. The job ended coming in under the original estimate. Momentum is as good as it gets! I was in the process of getting a television mounted above my fireplace. I shopped around with a handful of electricians who either told me 1) that they couldn't do such a job without opening the drywall - or 2) they couldn't complete the job until 3+ months out. Thank goodness Momentum came to my rescue! Tom came over to my house for an estimate and within a few days Jamie and Angel came over to rewire and mount the tv. They utilized the attic space so no dry wall had to be opened - and the work was done beautifully! We were looking to do a big job so we wanted to be sure we picked the right contractor who will do a good job at a competitive price. As you know, looking for and working with contractors can be extremely frustrating. After calling and meeting with a dozen different ones, and after one guy bailed on us (even after we paid him!), we finally came to Momentum. For our first appointment, Tom sent us a Google Calendar invite. From that moment, we knew Tom was a different kind of contractor. He is young, tech-savvy, extremely responsive and responsible, and very hardworking and well-meaning. He is very good at answering emails and texts, even later in the evening, and he will work with you to the best of his ability to resolve your issues. We were tackling a big job of rewiring the entire house on a tight schedule, and as you can guess, there were endless amounts of issues and headache -- Pulling permits. Contacting PG&E and them not showing up. Getting inspection appointment last minute. Failing inspection due to constantly changing rules -- But Tom was there every step of the way and made sure things get done, no matter how dire situations may seem. When we finally got the job done, I somewhat sad to see him go. This is a guy who has your best interest at heart, and I learned a lot in the few weeks working with him. Who would expect that a kitchen in a condo built in 2005 would NOT be wired for modern appliances? Sadly, us. We had to do a rush search for an electrician to convert a 110 v connection to 220, running new wire from the ground floor garage into the 2d floor kitchen and installing new outlets. Several companies we talked with couldn't meet our schedule. And then we found Momentum. Tom immediately came over to look at the situation, gave an estimate and got our project scheduled within a few days. The electrician arrived on time (exactly!) and immediately went to work. Last week I had a circuit blow in my home. I thought I could get the power back but I could not. SO I went through the yellow pages, calling a number of electricians, hoping I could get someone to come look at my situation. Everyone wanted to help but they were all very busy and unable to help. Finally I called Momentum Electrical in Oakland and talked to Tom. Over the phone he gave me some suggestions to try but still no power. Tom told me that Momentum was very busy as well, but after I pleaded with him Tom was very gracious and said that he had a crew not far from my home and he have them come by my house ASAP. Well within an hour, Douglas from Momentum Electric showed up at my home. He looked at the situation, made a few checks and found the problem. Douglas explained to me what I had overlooked. I am very pleased with the way Momentum Electric, functions. Tom was very helpful on the phone and even more generous with his offering of crew time. Douglas was the consummate professional. Courteous, knowledgeable and friendly. I was helped out of a tough problem by these guys and I will use their service in the future when I upgrade the wiring in my home.
