(This is my first ever Yelp review. Please excuse the novella.) I've struggled with a dizzying number of ailments for several years: vertigo, thyroid disorder, stress/anxiety, and unimaginable headaches. In 2005 and 2006 I had a brain aneurysm, that first bubbled and then burst. This caused me to miss months of work and left me frightened and often in pain. Western Medicine consistently treated these problems as unconnected. Despite having access to very good doctors, I was frustrated, in pain, and had no tools to begin to climb out of the pile of diagnoses I felt trapped under. I have no co-pays at doctors, and still a small mound of medical debt from previous health issues, so I was reluctant to spend out of pocket money on any health related treatment. But as my health problems continued to pile up I went to Mona in April of 2009. Her sliding scale encouraged me to make the leap, but after I experienced the first comprehensive health visit of my life I thought even the top of her scale was absurdly inadequate. Even after my first visit I felt a measure of significant relief from my immediate concerns of sporadic dizziness, and more important, a glimpse of understanding of myself as a whole integrated person, and a hint of the root of my various ailments. Chinese medicine was (and is!) a bit beyond my rigid western comprehension, but even the rudimentary understanding I've gained from Mona's patient thoughtful teaching and The Web That Has No Weaver, I've learned enough about myself to make healthy choices that leave me feeling balanced and integrated. My health, my mood, my sleep, my relationships are all in much better shape than they were before I started seeing Mona. Despite a fear of needles I find acupuncture with Mona a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I'm always a little sad when she comes back to remove the needles. In the very rare cases where something might hurt she gives you plenty of warning and a choice. A few months in I discontinued all the medications I had been taking (in consultation with my MDs!) and I've felt honestly healthy for the first time since childhood. This summer my schedule and some intense family issues have kept me from Mona, and I know I suffer for it. She's also amazing in a pinch. When I had a neck injury that a fistful of muscle relaxants couldn't touch, her needles had me feeling whole in about half an hour. Mona has an astonishing depth of knowledge about health issues. She's a nutrition and yoga expert in addition to her acupuncture expertise. I know that the wisdom and recommendations she dispenses from her iphone are more valuable than the direction I got from a dozen Park Avenue MDs. At Mona's recommendation I've also seen another acupuncturist, primarily for Chinese herbs, but also at times for acupuncture. He's a leader in the field, a dean of an acupuncture school, and extremely helpful and insightful, but honestly I feel both more relief and more understanding after a visit with Mona. Her office and treatment room are a sanctuary. Her patience and loving manner are superhuman. She's the only truly wise person I've ever met. If you're struggling with a chronic or an acute condition, please go see her. She's extremely self aware about what she can treat and what might be better handled elsewhere. I was so blessed to find Mona through Yelp. I had been managing a hormone condition with birth control and wanted to come off the pill to treat my symptoms more holistically and also try to get pregnant. Normally I go months without getting a period when off the pill but the DAY after my first session with Mona I got a full period, and got pregnant that cycle. I went to Mona for acupuncture and guided meditation every week for about 2 years. I love Mona the acupuncturist. She is truly amazing, sweet gentle and very knowledgeable and did I say gentle. I have had many issues from sciatic pain, allergies and other things and having gone to Mona I have to say they are practically gone. And they linger because of my own doing and not following what I am told to do. I have been going to Mona for a couple years, before that I went to others and I can truly say no one compares to Mona. She takes time to listen to treat your problem and then gives advice if you want on how to keep the pain off. There was a time when I would walk around in the city back hunched in so much pain and taking pills, and after seeing Mona I am off the pills and can do my regular activity again. Her office is also very clean and peaceful which is very important for me when I go to a acupuncturist. Her prices are very reasonable and if you have a hard time she will work with you. She took an entire hour to find out about my health history, and listen to what is really going on for me; It is so rare that a practitioner will really take the time to listen and inquire.
