I have been seeing YC for awhile now and just noticed I never reviewed him. Though I wish his office was located in non share space, since you have to share the restroom with the entire floor and the restroom situation is not great or cute. Moving on, I think he has a great bedside manner and we both love dogs and so he always asks about my baby. He's been great at treating my issues and even when I went to this orthopedic who couldn't help me, but he was able to alleviate the chronic pain. Super friendly and nice doctor. Ive never seen him before and I had some issues, so I emailed him to see if I can get an acupuncture appointment or herbal recommendation. He was super responsive and told me I needed more rest for my problem and said I can go to his office for an herbal consult. Upon visiting him, he said my problems could be handled with my diet, rather than any specific herbal remedy. He was super informative, told me wat I should or shouldn't eat, etc. He spent alot of time with me and didn't even charge me for his time since I didn't get any herbal supplement. NEEDLES FROM A GUY IN CHINATOWN Overall, I always felt relief after seeing him. Unfortunately, with my herniated disk, it was only short-term relief. This is my first acupuncture experience, but I did see Yaoshen Cai several times after. PRICE $80/session - CARDS ACCEPTED ACUPUNCTURE The first time he saw me, he missed the nerve behind my knee and it really shocked me, in both senses of the word. I saw him a few other times after that, and that never happened again, so it really was rare that he missed. He knows his points, in both senses of that word.. Ok I'll stop with the double meanings, lol. But ever since that first mishap, I never fully trusted him and was super antsy all the time, which stiffened my muscles, which made it very difficult to insert the needles, so I completely understand, it's not easy with fidgety customers! I FEEL A TINGLING There were many times where I felt a tingling and burning, that edged on the side of oddly neuro-uncomfortable. I'm not sure if that's usual with acupuncture, or if it's the qi realigning or whatnot, but it was there. CUPPING I loved the cupping at the end. It always felt great and increased more blood flow to the area, but I was burned a few times. DID IT WORK... I think it worked in the short-term, meaning for a few hours. It was always hard to tell because he immediately applies a numbing lotion post in the area where he does the acupuncture. PROFESSIONALISM He never pushed for me to come back, literally just says "have a good day." I respected that. But he's also crazy booked by hundreds of people, so not like he needs to try that hard. Also, everything is super clean and hygienic. HERBS He also is very knowledgeable about herbs. He is a vast array of herb information and can suggest something for your ailment based on Eastern Chinese medicine. I was able to purchase some Huang Qi (Astragalus) for like $2. OVERALL - 3.5 stars All in all, a good foray into acupuncture, and I'm glad I went several times and gave this a fair shot. I started seeing YC for a few problems I had; digestive issues, sports injuries and my thyroid. I won't know about the thyroid until I consult a specialist, but my other issues responded right away. The treatments were painless for the most part and the atmosphere is nap-inducing. He instructed me to avoid "cold foods" which I stumbled through at first but right away I noticed my digestion improved. I had terrible hip pain that has cleared up (I also got a less expensive office chair as my ergonomic gamer chair was the culprit). The place is very easy to get to, a short walk from the train and the place itself is really clean. I don't care for the shared bathroom, but that's on the building, not them. The only issue that was a work in progress is my knee, which I injured years prior thanks to an overzealous trainer. The needles were very painful in that area and I'm an active person who works out regularly . Unfortunately, I couldn't continue my sessions because of COVID-19 shutting all of NYC down, but following his recommendations I've been able to maintain the results. I'll resume sessions shortly for my knee and thyroid because I'm very happy with the results. Dr. Cai relieved the pain from the primary condition I came in for (dysmenorrhea), but some of my other ancillary concerns persisted (i.e.,insomnia). I like that he incorporates the principles of TCM nutrition into his recommendations which I think are essential to addressing the underlying causes of illness. He was also conservative about prescribing herbs, which I liked because we don't know the potential toxicity of herbs and I feel less is better. It is difficult to schedule an appointment last minute and I can't always plan for when pain strikes, so I also see other practitioners. He is also very open and clear when you have questions about your condition and what else you can do to help relieve pain. Being tired from the typical western treatment of medication, medication, and maybe surgery, it seems only natural to give Acupuncture a try. If it works then great, if it doesn't no harm no foul except on the wallet. I had a nagging shoulder issue that lasted about a month and a half after telling Dr. Cai about the issue he proceeded to do some acupuncture with needles and a cupping heat treatment. At first prick it hit a nerve and felt instant relief and I had confidence in the shoulder getting better. Within two days my shoulder is about 90% better than what it was. Still some lingering issues that might require another visit but pretty satisfied. Downgraded a star because the price increased from the reviews to $80 an hour session now. Due to popularity on Yelp Dr. Cai charges the white price which is about 40-50% premium over other acupuncture places. But the fact that he only takes appointments and no walk ins is both positive and a negative, his office won't be flooded with patients, but it might take you a month to get a slot, and his ability to communicate in English combined with the effectiveness of his treatment makes it well worth it. read more

His bedside manner is polite, he is 4th generation accupunturist that knows exactly what he's doing. he is an herbalist but unlike many that do both, alot of the people i went to see before Yaoshen always sold me herbs even if i didnt need them and Dr. Cai doesnt do that. How he helped me.. i was trying to conceive for almost a year. and basically had made the decision to see a fertility specialist in October. but before then i would try accupncture for 3 months. This is a long overdue review. The reason why I decided to sign up for Yelp. About a year and half ago, I felt a lot of pain on my wrist thumb area. I did the usual and went to see my physician. She took some x-rays and identified it as De Quervain Syndrome. This pain made it extremely hard to do ANYTHING - cooking, writing and even turning a doorknob. She said this is quite common and no big deal. We'll just give you a steroid shot. Great I thought! The pain subsided, but the pain returned a month later! And I was given another steroid shot and the pain returned within two weeks. I started to talk to people and researched online about how bad steroid shots are and how over time your muscles/tendons essentially deteriorates from the steroid! I decided to try acupuncture. I'm Asian, but never experienced it. I went on Yelp and found Dr. Cai's reviews in depth and helpful and booked an appt. The first time I went he examined my entire right arm. He first asked if I had an MRI to see if I might have some miniature bone fractures causing this pain. I told him I did get x-rays and that is not the case. This immediately made me trust him as a professional. (like the other person wrote before). He continued with the first session and afterwards it still hurt and I was naturally still skeptical. BUT he warned me that I needed 3 more sessions before the pain will disappear, so I took the chance. He reminded me acupuncture does not work like Western medicine. It is a gradual healing process and that my patience to see it work will be beneficial in the long run. My last session was February of 2011. It's now September! I honestly forget I even had this pain. He did wonders! I like him so much I want to find another reason to go back, but I'm actually good right now. I HIGHLY recommend him. P.S. I have been to numerous acupuncturists in NY and Yaoshen Cai is really good. I'm Asian and I grew up using acupuncture since I was a kid. My dad has always told me that it's not worth going to any acupuncturist; you have to go to a good one if you want results. All the others, according to my dad, is a waste of money. Other acupuncturists I've been to can't find "the spot." In order to know whether the needle was placed properly, you should feel your muscle tinge/spasm. I went to other places where they will literally put in like 5-10 needles into my back and no "spasm." But with Yaoshen, he gets it every time with one try. It's really amazing. His office may not be posh, but that's why you also don't pay an arm and a leg for his services. In order for acupuncture to work, you have to go frequently until you're better. Some acupuncturists actually consider it ludicrous and unethical that other offices charge so much. It defeats the purpose/philosophy of their job which is to provide healing. If you're paying an exorbitant amount for each appointment then it's not likely that you'll come as often as you need to in order to reach healing. So in my opinion, I'm totally fine with the fact that his office provides what we need (a clean bed, clean needles, privacy, and time for a full one-hour appointment). *Btw, you should also check to see if your insurance company and flexible spending will cover it. Ours did! Also, I've had chronic back pain for years and tried everything: physical therapy, chiropractic, massages, etc. And this (along with rolfing) were the only two things that worked on my back. I'm still not back to where I used to be (I still can't run on a regular basis) but at least I don't have back pain all the time. read more

What a gifted man, Yoashen truly has a special touch. A very good friend of mine told me about his work about 6 years ago. It isn't until now that I finally have paid him a visit. Unfortunately my visits are for a sprained ankle. In addition to going to physical therapy and doing exercises at home acupuncture has helped to speed up my recovery time. He practices a variety of methods and will use the one that best suits your need. In addition to this he will change your diet and give you exercises for your aliment. His touch is very gentle when he inserts the needles, it's after he has removed the needles that you begin to experience the best part ( at least in my case), the massage. The massage is intense but my foot thanks him for it. What I truly enjoy about going to him is his willingness to answer any and every question you might have. I also love the little women at the desk, who is there to greet you. I think it might be his mom (not really sure) in any case she is so sweet. read more

The man is a master. I know a few of you are upset that your phone calls are not being returned, but you have to keep in mind what you are dealing with. Dr. Cai has a tiny office with two beds in it, and one helper. Each treatment is almost an hour. So he can see at most 20 people a day. I wanted to see Dr. Cai today, and could not get an appointment. I went to another place and paid $150! Dr. Cai charges $60! I have a reoccurring stiff neck. Every 3-4 months I wake up and cant turn my head. After one visit with Dr. Cai I am always better. Every other place I have been treated. Including the place I just gave $150. I have gone in with a stiff neck, and left with a stiff neck. Dr. Cai should double his prices! Then maybe there would be some open appointments. His typical treatment is acupuncture followed by about 30 min of electrical stimulation through acupuncture needles, then about 15 min of cupping, followed by a light massage. This has cured me every time. Sixty bucks well spent in my opinion. read more

Yaoshen is a wonderful healer. I have been to a fair number of accupuncturists, and I think he is one of the best. Thankfully, he has been able to keep my condition under control (L4/L5 disc herniation with sciatica). As a caveat, my sessions have not been without some initial intense discomfort. I went to Dr. Cai a couple of months ago. I was in a car accident in April 2009, and I had several spinal and neck fractures because of it. For a couple of months I was in torso and neck braces. Even though I was pretty much recovered, I still had lingering neck pain and back pain. I was constantly rotating my neck and stretching my back to get some relief, and I went to get massages done every couple of months but nothing ever worked. Only short term relief. Dr. Cai is very skillful and patient when treating patients with Chinese (herbal) medicine. He keeps "tweaking" the herbal mixture, as needed, and I feel much better after drinking my "magic potion." I do wish the office was set up better. He is popular and the waiting area is cramped and not comfortable, especially in the winter when people come in with coats and boots and scarves and umbrellas. The most confounding thing, however, is the lavatory. * * PUBLIC RESTROOMS at 221 Canal Street, 5th floor: Also before you go to the restroom (in the corridor), you must take an allotment of toilet paper from the reception's desk. I discovered accupuncture 5 years ago in florida .I relocate in nyc and it was a real challenge to find a good accupuncturist .I went through a lot :( Yaoschen is an amazing doctor .He is kind and real responsible and do the best he can to help you :) .He is real talented and real dedicated to his job ! If you're looking a posh, upper east side feel then this is not the place for you. Located in Chinatown, this place is small. The reception area is small and is where all the herb drawers are located. The treatment area is small and partitioned off only by a curtain. So why the 5 stars? 1. The doctor is in and knows what he is doing. He asks what is ailing you and does a brief examination, Chinese herbalist style, to assess what you need. 2. He explains what he is doing and how it will likely feel. He is also amazingly skilled. 3. He is honest. In my case I was having digestive issues. After my acupuncture treatment he gave me dietary guidelines to follow. When I follow them I feel good; when I don't I feel it so he was spot on with that. He also didn't recommend subsequent treatments. This means to me that if he recommends subsequent treatments it is likely because you need it. 4. The price for his services is great. We came in with my elderly mother in law. My wife was told that they are closed and it's open every other Saturday. Ok that's our bad. We didn't check. And we're walk ins. We then put our bags down and sat our mother in law for a breather, to think when we were going to book our appointments. Then the lady said again "we're closed. We need to close the door." I checked out Dr. Cai because of the rave reviews on yelp and I have to agree with the reviews. My aching lower back for 10 years was gone instantly after my first visit. I give him more than 5 stars for that and $60 bucks was all worth it. This place is really small... the herb store and "bed area" was divided by a curtain. The acupuncture was combined with heat therapy and cupping. It concerned me the cleanliness of the cupping glasses for each patient (hey, i may be wrong!)... The verdict? This morning I had an excellent first visit at the office of Yaoshen Cai. In August I had been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome by a Sports Medicine Dr. specializing in the hand and wrist. Later I began occupational therapy, as I'm not at the point of needing surgery. I am choosing Eastern medicine now, as an alternative. I was greeted with great care and felt right at home. Yaoshen Cai carefully listened to my concerns before educating and then treating me for my wrist pains. He is very knowledgeable, caring and down to earth. I look foward to my next week's appointment. His office is very accessible to taxis, bus and train. There's also an bank downstairs if you forget cash.
