I had a 1:45 PM appointment with Brenna Ewing at Johnson County Dermatology today, and my…read moreexperience was one of the most frustrating I've had with any medical office. I left more than 30 minutes early for my appointment but got caught in a major traffic accident backup on the highway. As a courtesy, I called the office five minutes before my scheduled appointment to explain the situation and let them know I would arrive by 2:00 PM or sooner. I arrived at exactly 2:00 PM and immediately went inside to check in. Only then was I informed that I was in the wrong building and needed to go across the parking lot to another office. After going to the correct location and checking in, I sat for several minutes before being told that Brenna Ewing would not see me because of a strict 15-minute late policy. What makes this especially frustrating is that I was physically on-site at 2:00 PM and was delayed further because the staff initially directed me to the wrong building. I explained the situation and even asked if she could simply take a quick look at the spot on my face that I had come in to have examined. The answer was no. I was told I could wait an hour and hope to be worked in or simply reschedule. This is a perfect example of the double standard that exists in healthcare today. If a provider runs 15, 30, or even 60 minutes behind schedule, patients are expected to wait without complaint. But when a patient encounters circumstances beyond their control, calls ahead as a courtesy, arrives on the property within the allotted time, and is then delayed further by office confusion, there is apparently zero flexibility or consideration. Customer service, common sense, and basic courtesy were completely absent. I understand offices need scheduling policies, but there should also be room for professional judgment and compassion. Instead, I felt treated like a number rather than a patient. Very disappointing experience, and unfortunately it left me with little confidence in either the patient-first philosophy or professionalism of this practice.

When I arrived, no one was wearing masks. I was told that they are exempt from wearing them, and was then lectured about the death rate of COVID, that masks are completely ineffective, and that I can go ahead and take my mask off. When I explained that I have differing beliefs and good reason to wear one, I was again belittled. You could tell they really didn't want me to wear it, which is not their choice to make. Already blindsided about the masks, I then asked if the doctor could keep 6 feet from me in the room. A reasonable compromise, right? She told me we could discuss it once we got to the room. I wasn't sure why we couldn't discuss it in the lobby right then, but I later realized it was because she had no plans to keep her distance from me. In the room, she sat very close to me despite me having already requested her not to. I understand if someone is exempt from mask wearing. I get it. My issue here is that they did not make this clear to me as a new patient. Furthermore, the doctor lectured me about masks and suggested I take mine off. And finally, they did not attempt to keep distance. I felt very uncomfortable. This office should make it clear they are exempt, so their patients can then make a choice that is best for their personal health. They should also allow patients to wear masks if they choose, without making them feel wrong for wearing them. I am very disappointed with the professionalism of Midwest Dermatology. If you want to feel that your voice is valued and heard as a patient, do not choose this office.

For starters, I recommended this change to their Yelp page, so it should reflect accurately: They are no longer in the confusing medical plazas of St. Luke's, but instead they're at 4400 Broadway Blvd, Suite 400 on the 4th floor, naturally. Don't make the same mistake I did of running late, parking in the wrong garage and high tailing it over to the right spot at the last second! This new space is crisp & clean. Sterile, if I'm honest, but that's a good thing in both the medical world and Covid times. They have all the proper precautions in place like temp. checking, distancing, masking, sanitizer available, etc. Dr. Newland herself was right on time and diagnosed my minor issue in like, two seconds. She also listened when I said I'd rather not take an oral antibiotic (my own personal reasons, focusing on building my microbiome and immunity) and prescribed something else that should work. If I get scheduled with her again I'll be glad to take the appointment, and if she's taking new patients which she appears to be, I'd recommend reaching out.

WORST OF ALL - I called with chest pains (thinking I had Covid issues I was obeying CDC instructions to call my GP first) only to find they were ALL on Spring Break...! I couldn't get access to any clinician (couldn't get past the officious receptionist). So I hung up & called a NP in the family, and was advised to get into the ER immediately. Bottom line - 3 weeks now since my heart attack and still NOTHING from my doctor or anyone in the practice. Pretty appalling. I am done with trusting my health to this place and I would never recommend anyone go there. But hey - maybe they just hated me...?

The office here was efficient and the appointment was thorough. I went to another dermatologist last year at another hospital who was almost mocking that I was in to get checked out. She's like, "you don't use a tanning booth and don't have anything worrisome? Why are you here?" Um. You know, to not get skin cancer and to do preventative care! It was the opposite here where my appointment ran smoothly while also taking any other questions I had. So if she's accepting new patients (no guarantee), I'd highly recommend Dr. Horner. She knows what she's doing and is overall top-notch.

She will also tell you if she feels comfortable or not removing a mole or doing a certain procedure. The parking garage is a pain in the butt, no one can park between the lines. If you drive a larger vehicle you should just head right up to floor 6/7. This is considered plaza 1 but its in building 3. The nurses were all very friendly and communicative. I have another appointment in May. She is part of St, Lukes Medical Services.
