That process has been consistently smooth and efficient. Everyone I've encountered here has been polite and clearly engaged in their job. I've had great conversations about books, reading recommendations, and even baking tips! The staff work hard to inspire people in the community to read and learn. Since COVID (and possibly before) the librarians regularly post videos geared towards child enrichment, with story times, crafts, baking, and science experiments all being offered. I think this is a cool, thoughtful service. They also put on library reading challenges, offering participants the chance to win cool prizes (for both adults and kids) from various community businesses. The building itself is a nice size. It has both a cozy and open feel with high ceilings. They offer a sizable amount of computers for public use, as well as places to read and/or study. It is always peacefully quiet in there when I stop in. I feel fortunate to have access to such a fine resource staffed with hard-working and passionate people. It is a gem!

My favorite thing about this library though is the Friends of the library store to the right when you first walk in. You can donate books there and they sell them for very cheap as well. I just got two books on my wish list for $3 each and they appeared to be brand new! My mom said they used to have a cafe and she misses that part- but I wasn't here during that time.

There is a reception area when you come in, and restrooms not far from it. There are two levels. Each one is very user friendly. There are tables and chairs to sit, and stay a while. There is NOTHING TO DO in Monmouth or the Salem area in general. You're surrounded by farm land and literal fields of dirt. Not to mention the manure farm that you have to drive past to get into the town... a literal POOP FARM is what greets you to Western Oregon University, I'm not kidding the entire town smells like feces you kinda block it out eventually but if you think about it... it's there... always there. On top of the town being a boring rural, white trash, methane air filled hellscape. WOU has horrible academics and sports. Out of the many many classes I took there I genuinely learned nothing from 98% of them. The teachers are underpaid and the schools finances are so bad, programs get shut down and striped back every year. The sports teams are horrendous and many of the players think they're hot sh*t, they all have that D2 ego where they claim they're gonna transfer up but instead fail all their classes and spend 7-8 years going into debt to play for a mid ass sports team. Because of these horrible circumstances and WOU letting literally anyone into their school, the football team has literal criminals on it. I have wittinesses on 5 different occasions 15-25 football players mug someone. This always happened at party's where somebody would piss off one of the football players so 15+ of them would gang up on 1 single guy and beat the life out of him. Not all of the players are like this but I know many of them are. 0 stars, Save yourself, don't go here, it's such an awful school and in such an awful place. This review hardly scratches the surface of how God awful this place is. The people who like it are lying to themselves or don't know what a real college has to offer.

One man in particular who works there spoke in full voice and was just having a grand old time, all the time, and no amount of earplugs or distancing myself from the checkout counter was ever enough. I'm positive that the people he interacted with appreciated his energy and enthusiasm and liked being made to feel welcome but I eventually gave up and made the drive to Newport every time I needed to be able to really concentrate. At the Mark O.Hatfield Library main desk, staff will issue to area residents a "community borrower's card" for a yearly fee of $50. To access the campus, I always park in the visitors' lot on the east side of Winter St., close to the intersection with Pringle Parkway. The signage is confusing: parking is free for casual drop-ins only on weekends. For those from away, walk NE from the visitors' parking until you see the fountain. There is found an excellent map and you can orient yourself. The Martha Springer Botanical Garden is a few minutes' walk from the library and worth a visit. It does not show on the online map. It is the green strip north of the Sparks Center, on the south bank of the Mill Race.
