Such a cute, cozy library! There is one room, where you enter, full of books. To the right, a second, large room is filled with books and toys for kids. From Legos to a mini kitchen, trucks and lacing work, there is something for every young child. The library is clean and air conditioned. The staff young and friendly. If you're visiting for a time, and have your ID on you, you can get a visitors card which allows you three months of book check-outs (up to 3 at a time). What a great offer! If you want a really quiet cool little place, sort of a hideaway refuge to get away from it all and have some good reading, this is it. Key West has long been known as a root hold for authors and writers. Of course the name and fame of Hemmingway overshadows most of them, but there are in fact so many more. The list of those who have engaged in the art and craft of writing while in Key West or about Key West is seemingly endless with works by John Hersey, James Merrill, Elizabeth Bishop, Richard Wilbur, John Malcolm Brinnin, Alison Lurie, Robert Stone, Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, Philip Burton, Judy Blume, Nancy Friday, Harry Mathews, Marie Chaix, Shel Silverstein, Wilfrid Sheed, David Kaufelt, Ann Beattie, Jimmy Buffett and Philip Caputo. Then, it is also well acknowledge as the place where Tennessee Williams completed his famous works "Smoke and Summer" and "Night of the Inguana," and where Robert Frost wrote "The Gift Outright." Every year Key West hosts various events for writers whose various works and collections have ended up here. Most recently the library really received a prize jewel of a gift being the mere 47 worded hand written "General Order" documenting Key West's history back to 1823 along with some one thousand other historical documents which have been added to its rare books and artifacts collection. Important! Free "patron only" parking is around the back, so enter from Elizabeth Street. Also, while there is a "power outlets turn off at 5:45" sign, ignore that on days when they close at 8. I want to give it two stars, but the employees here are so very cool! Also, there is a great display of painted "cut out" ships by David Harrison Wright. The library could use many updates, a little cleaning -- or, in the case of the restrooms, a LOT of cleaning -- and the Internet can drop out sometimes, but it's a great location with many good things going for it. read more
