I have been fortunate enough to fish with Montana Troutfitters guides on multiple occasions and can't recommend them highly enough. They are guest focused, accommodating and down right fun. I've brought with me guests that are experienced anglers and complete novices. They never batted an eye and were able to put everyone on fish regardless of the angler or the conditions, and even trained someone while on the boat who had never held a fly rod before. Additionally the shop crew is stellar. I've popped in prior to some self-guided wade trips on the Gallatin and beyond and each time the've been super helpful and given me the flies I need to get the fish to eat. My dad and I did a guided trip with Blaine on the lower Madison, everything we wanted out of Montana fly fishing. Blaine was the chillest guide we could of had, next time we're in the state we will definitely be doing another float trip through this shop. Hit the Montana grand slam, if we were more experienced we woulda easily had a 20 fish day. Ended up with 12 not including the 3 that came off after hooking up. Staff was friendly, helping us with everything we needed (not much since the trip booking included everything we needed). Grant (our guide) was fantastic. Friendly, very helpful and a great teacher. Really knows the rivers and helped us catch a bunch of nice fish every day we were out. Shop itself has a fairly limited selection of gear but really good fly and tying material options. read more

Had a great time on the river! Chris Bury was our guide and he is awesome! My daughter and I spent the day with Chris on the Madison river outside of Bozeman. We both enjoy recreational fishing but have never fly fished. Chris taught us the basics and let us get to it. It was so beautiful and so fun!We actually caught some fish. What a blast!! What a fantastic experience! I wanted to set up a great experience for my two boys (age 12, twins) as they are new to fly fishing. I called ahead (1 week) and spoke to Jason who was tremendously helpful and accommodating. He set us up with Ron who was the perfect fit. He was patient with my boys and full of knowledge about the rivers and the whole area for that matter. Ron was far MORE than I had hoped or expected. He gave my boys some lessons on shore before we started and even showed them how to use the screen to see what the fish are eating in the river and how to choose flies based on that. The food they had for us was exceptional and even my boys were raving about how how tasty it was. 12 yr old boys can be picky! Ron had my boys casting better than me in no time with his expert pointers and kind manner. I cannot recommend Montana Troutfitter enough. I will be calling them again when we are back in town as I am sure me and my boys will be ready to hit the rivers! Outstanding guide, great fish finder, and fun to spend the day with. He got us on the fish on a very tough day from what the other fishermen on the river were reporting. My wife and I walked in with two older custom fly rods my father had left to me after his recent passing, the rods did not have reels. Being custom rods they had no markings on them to say what line weight was right for each rod. Jake, the stores manager grabbed a few different Promo Reels and took us over to the side of their building and started working through the different lines by casting to find the right weight and action according to how the rod reacted, amazing! After finding the proper line, Jake even took a decent amount of time to show us each how to cast and place the line, and how you'd bring in a fish. We need a lot of practice, but Jake was super calm and not in a hurry, he kept saying to each of us, this is why we're here, we're here to help! We were so pleased with the service that we might come back for a full on fly fishing class and guided fishing trip. Thanks again Jake! :-) read more
