The guides I have had a pleasure of fishing with from Yellowstone Angler are all top notch, awesome people that you can enjoy spending the whole day with. They are all very knowledgable about the local waters and insects and willing to teach you whatever you are willing to learn. If you go out with these guys you will be put in a position to catch some very nice sized trout if you are able to follow their directions. As I did my first fly fishing trip ever with a guide from here I can say from experience that they know how to teach and aid anyone from their first cast onward as they are also able to help hone the skills of more seasoned veterans. Highly recommend you get a guide from here if you are fishing in the area and want to set yourself up for some great catches and memories. The shop itself is also very cool and has a lot of great merch and lots of friendly folks around who are easy to strike up a conversation with and get some insight into how the river is fishing and what bugs they are getting hits with. I have been reading Yellowstone's gear reviews for years. I wanted a Hardy Zane Pro rod to chase bone fish in Turks and Caicos I could not find the rod local so I called Yellowstone 2 days before I was leaving, after ups had already picked up their orders for the day. I was willing to pay for overnight shipping and the guy that picked up the phone offered to drive it to ups at 4:30 in order to save me $50 on shipping by shipping it 2nd day instead of overnight. John Bond was our guide on our float in July 2018 and it was such a fantastic time! From the moment John Bond introduced himself to the end of the float we had some great laughs, learned a lot and enjoyed the BBQ he brought for lunch! John did a great job of catering to our needs (myself being new to fly fishing and my husband being more advanced) and ensuring we both had a great time. He spent some time going over the basics with me and was super patient. John definitely went above and beyond our expectations and took time to get to know us. He also took some great pictures of us so we had some memories to take home to our family. Baught one of there silvertip 5wt fly rod less than a year ago, when I noticed the real seat butt portion of the rod was coming un glued, so called them up to see if they could help me out with it. I was informed if I wanted to get it fixed it would cost me 50.00 plus shipping, he then informed me that since it was only 80.00 that is there policy. I could buy a new rod for the same price. I asked him do u use different epoxy for more expensive rods he informed me that he doesn't. Made me chuckle to myself. U know I realize that 80.00 dollars isn't that much for a fly rod, supposed to be a quality rod according to there own web site . So as far as I'm concerned there rods suck and there warranty is even worse. If I could give minus stars for this review I would.... read more

I'd planned on fishing the East Gallatin the afternoon of my arrival, but it was on "hoot owl" restrictions, and could only be fished in the morning up until 2:00 p.m., so I headed to Livingston from the Bozeman airport. Stopping in at George Anderson's Yellowstone Angler, I talked with an employee who recommended Mill Creek, in the Paradise Valley. He recommended checking a section at mile marker 7, and described an irrigation diverter to look for. It took about half an hour to get to Mill Creek, but luckily, it was near my next destination, Nelson's Spring Creek. After crossing Mill Creek, the road began to climb. What a gorgeous stream! Hugging a mountainside, it tumbles down over big rocks and boulders. It's loaded with cutthroat and cutbows, and they are willing to come to a dry fly or a nymph. I caught many smaller fish, but some in the 12-14" range, and I lost a bigger fish to a bad knot. Nobody was fishing this stream, perhaps more focused on better known waters, but I'd fish it again anytime. I floated the Yellowstone River with Yellowstone Angler guide Ashby Bell. A former Pennsylvania native, Ashby is known for finding big fish in the Yellowstone. He certainly lived up to his reputation. We fished below Livingston, and the river was huge and at times, brawling, with big fast rapids. And it was low for this time of year! However, Ashby seemed to know the water intimately, moving us from bank to bank to find the best structure, or pointing out soft water in the middle of a rapid. Like other favorite guides I've fished with, he soon seemed more of a generous fishing buddy intent on making my day the best possible than someone I'd hired just to do a job. We talked about everything that day. But he could not have been more professional or talented. We started with a 19" brown that took a Chubby Chernobyl right across from the put in. He joked that catching a good fish that soon could be a bad sign. We've all had it happen; you think the day will go well and you don't see another fish. But I'm pretty sure he knew it wouldn't happen to us. All day there were sizeable browns, cutthroat, and rainbows in the net, either on the Chubby or one of the droppers suspended below it. And a huge brown that I finally got to the surface came unbuttoned as we dropped into a rapid. It would have been great to get it in the net, but I was thrilled to have hooked and fought it. Ashby took the attached photos and sent them to me promptly, without a reminder. I wish all my Montana guides had done that. I've been in touch with him about fishing with me in Pennsylvania. Next time I'm in Montana, I'll float with him again, and I've learned that he fishes many rivers in the state. My first fly fishing adventure was with John Bond. He was always giving me tips on what to do, where to cast, when to back mend ( new term for me) and finally how to set my hook. It wasn't easy but it was soooo fun and I caught several fish the biggest a real fight for me a 3lb rainbow. I can say I will definitely do this again. read more

TL;DR: a fantastic shop with some strong and not-so-strong guides. Strap in, this might take awhile. This review will cover 2 guide days w/ the shop, 3 in-shop interactions where location/bug recommendations were made, and separate phone/online purchases for a rod/reel, a reel, and a box of flies. First, the guides: I fished two days w/ the shop, both floats on the Yellowstone. The day with Jon Bond was fantastic. Good vibes, easygoing, lots of laughter, but also lots of fish. Plenty of good tips on where/how to hopper fish, reading water, etc. Just a great all-around day. The other day was with Eric P. Eric is without-a-doubt fishy. He definitely knows the river and how to get you hooked up with plenty of fish. The trouble was, he absolutely ignored the guy in the back of the boat. Didn't look back, didn't talk to the guy in back, didn't even have a casting brace in the back of his boat. Basically, the guy in back got a lunch and a boat ride, but not a guide. Eric also throws off a solid "you-suck-at-fishing" vibe; every time I missed a cast by more than a foot or two, his disappointment was palpable. He could stand to do some soul searching about why people pay for guides......it's not solely about getting onto fish but also to learn a bit and enjoy the day. On to the shop. Went into the shop several times in my week in Livingston. Everyone had just the right mix of chill and helpful. Nobody hovered, but they were always ready to help. We got solid recommendations on where to fish on our non-guided days--they asked questions about what we were after, how much time we had, etc. Jamie (who we later learned owns the joint with his dad but couldn't have been more down to earth) recommended 4 patterns for our day on Slough Creek. We landed fish on every single recommended bug (and not much else). One of the better in-shop vibes I've experienced. All of my phone/internet orders have been smooth. If they don't have something in stock, they tell you up front. When my first choice of fly line wasn't available, they didn't hard sell me on the other options but did take the time to outline the pros/cons of alternatives. When I asked them to stuff a box for me for a specific handful of rivers, the bugs seemed thoughtfully selected, well organized, and was within the budget of what I requested. Terrible e-commerce company. Definitely do not recommend ordering online. Ordered rod and reel 17 days ago and they only shipped it today after having to call and insist that they replace the back-order item with something similar. They take 2-3 days to answer emails (having to always send two before they answer) and do not give you lead time on back-ordered items. After suggesting they NOT sell out of stock items they insisted that its how they do business. I let them know that the rod and reel were birthday presents and needed to have them within two weeks and there was not effort made to find a replacement reel. A perfect example of why Amazon will rule the shopping world. read more

Customer service is awful. The owner assembled and installed fly rod case to my truck. Cost $500. Fell off the truck within 30 miles. The owner said he didn't think they were responsible. He finally said, "I guess the customer is always right." He begrudgingly replaced it. Good products. Awful, awful service. read more
