Went here for lunch today. Every single entree was amazing! Service was quick and server was attentive to refilling drinks without being asked. I ordered a fajita, but what I received was a tostado. It was very crispy on the outside but tough on the inside. I tried to eat it but gave up about halfway through. This is the first time I have been disappointed with what I've ordered at this restaurant. I don't know what went wrong this time other than a miscommunication. Also to note, it was extremely busy, but I had sit and wait for about 20 minutes for my bill. I think because I told them I didn't get what I ordered. Maybe they thought I didn't know the difference between the two items. I don't know, it was just very disappointing. read more

We dropped in around 7:30 on a Wednesday after seeing most of the other restaurants were closing at 8. While not much to look at on the outside, the food was fresh and tasty, the service was efficient and prices were reasonable. And it wasn't only us, shortly after being seated a group of 8 (presumably) Mexicans (or at least native Spanish speakers) sat down, which is always a good (and validating) sign. I was traveling in the area and happened to find this hidden restaurant while stopping at Walmart. It's on a small strip. The decor is a little dated, but the restaurant is clean. Chips and salsa came out right away. Salsa was great and the chips were fresh. Not too salty or greasy. Guacamole was great. I ordered chicken fajita lunch special. It was good, but it didn't come sizzling or with tortillas. So it was more like a fajita salad. Disappointed in that as I really wanting fajitas. There isn't any chile poblano on the menu to order, but it's on the front of the menu describing what it is. Hm? Service needs improvement. Waiter never came back to see if everything was okay or to refill drinks. Beef taco and beef chalupa were both good. Chile relleno had a little too much cheese. read more

We came here because our 1st choice burger place on the main strip was "out of food" at 6:15pm. Covid has obviously done a number on several of the establishments around west Jefferson. Everywhere was short staffed and we had a party of 8. So we called Monte De Rey and they could accommodate us. We enjoyed some of the best Mexican food at an extremely reasonable price. We also were lucky to have "Shorty" as our waiter and he was awesome. He went above and beyond to serve us. We got several different entrees but the fajitas for 2 and the loaded nachos were superb. It should have been named fajitas for 6. The margaritas were yummy too. We Had lots of laughs and a special birthday surprise! Thanks Monte de Rey for a dinner to remember! read more

Since we look for good Mexican food wherever we go, we decided to stop into this little place near the Walmart in Jefferson. It was popular among the locals, so it seemed like a good bet. We were quickly seated, but that was the only thing that happened quickly. I decided to order a margarita and see how it stacked up. It was definitely middle of the road. There was some tequila in it, but not much. We had chips that were not salted and served with a very thin salsa. Then we waited.....and waited.... Eventually they brought out 3 of the four entrees. We waited politely for them to bring out my sister in laws. Then we waited some more. This always seems to happen to her, I don't know what it is. After 10 min., they finally came back out with her dish. By that time, we had given up and already started ours. I had an combo plate that had a tamale and two kinds of enchiladas. Oddly, both enchiladas tasted exactly alike. The tamale was pretty much all masa. While the people were very nice, there were just too many issues, we won't be going back. read more

It's not easy to see from the main road but easy to get to beyond the end of Walmart parking lot. This was our first visit and we will certainly return. We were under the mistaken impression the restaurant was permanently closed as was reported by another online site. Far from the truth as was evidenced by the number of cars in the parking lot. I had the combination plate and my wife a lunch special. We both felt that the food had much more flavor than similar dishes in other Mexican restaurant. Service was fast and friendly. The dishes were served hot as they should be. We do recommend it based on this first experience and hope that those that follow will enjoy it also. We love this restaurant. We live out of town but every tome we go to WJ, we head here. You get large portions and the staff is always friendly. The cheese dip is the best and the dessert at the end is perfect! We always want to come back. read more

It's okay. Came here because my favorite restaurant closed (Tamales). The decor is dark and dated, but the service is good. The quality of the food was moderate. Nothing out of this world. I ordered the Taco Salad and the shell was very greasy. The ingredients inside were bland. The food got cold quickly. Being from California & Arizona we know great Mexican food. We were hesitant to try this place due to the location in a very small town and word from a local. We were extremely surprised, so much so we came back a few days later. The food & service here is exceptional! The pork was very tender and the #1 Special Shrimp plate was out of this world. The tortillas are fresh and the rice & beans are great too. You can't beat the prices or the quantity of food you receive. Overall, great place!!! read more
