I travel through Boone periodically, but usually eat somewhere else in my journeys. Timing was different during one of my recent trips, so I started thinking about Boone dining options (used to live nearby). Dos Amigos came to mind, though I bet it's been a decade or more since I last ate there, so I had no clue what to expect. As the previous sentence reveals, this restaurant has been a tenant in the New Market Center shopping complex for quite a while. Mexican food and adult beverages seem to belong in a college town, after all. And the restaurant was well attended during my visit, a good sign that the restaurant was still deserving of my business. That said, I was seated and attended to very quickly. The complimentary chips and wide variety of accompanying dips (five options!) were a strong start to the meal. Thankfully, I somehow managed to save enough room for the main event, a lovely plate of carnitas that arrived in a reasonable time. Joining the pork on my plate was guac salad and a healthy portion of beans. I found myself pleased with all the food I was presented. Prices were reasonable for the amount of food I received, and the quality of service I received throughout my stay was excellent. Dos Amigos is a bit noisy, and the dining arrangements do show a bit of wear and tear, but if you don't mind those things I'd call this a smart stop for a filling meal. A solid "American Mexican food" restaurant. No complaints. ACP checked all the boxes-- decent rice, moist and well seasoned chicken, plenty of cheese sauce. This restaurant provides 5 different dips/salsas for free at the table, which is a nice change. Friendly and attentive staff, bustling but not unbearably noisy. Fun place to grab a meal with friends. This will always be our go to Mexican restaurant here in Boone. The service is always so speedy and the food is always so delicious! I had to get my go to order the Shrimp Cocktail which is full of flavor and amazing shrimp! The only sad part is they weren't serving alcohol so no margarita :( read more

Absolute best meal and service! We both had the Rava Con Crema which was new to us. Absolutely delicious! I had the blood orange margarita which is made with Patron. It was brought in a shaker so it filled my glass 3 times. The mango salsa was amazing. They bring 4 different salsas with your chips, all good. Went on a Sunday afternoon with friends and were quickly seated. Music was nice and not too loud. The food options were endless and happy to try a few items with my partner. Our server seemed overwhelmed as she would rush by our table. The pina coladas were HUGE and I was shocked by the price. Fernando MADE my day. Absolute treasure of a server. I'm a waitress and I ought to take notes from him. He was both friendly but to the point. I also credit Carlos for getting my tables chips and dips IMMEDIATELY after sitting down. They give you 5 dips to pair with the chips and it was such a high note of the meal. The atmosphere was also so welcoming, comfortable, and authentic. Having a Latina immigrant mother, my standards for Hispanic food is super high and did not expect somewhere in Boone to exceed that standard. For the main entrée, I get the sopa de pollo, which is very flavorful and filling. It comes with a ton of vegetables. I also recommend their horchata, which is free refills. In town visiting our college student & stopped in for dinner. Friday night & the restaurant was pretty busy. Minimal wait. Customer Service was pretty good through the whole meal. They bring out chips and multiple dipping options. I love salsa and theirs was pretty good. I got a margarita with Patron and wasn't impressed. Hence the 3 stars, margarita's should be on point at a Mexican restaurant. Dinner came out quickly. Everyone enjoyed their meal after adding some of the sauces. Food was bland. The ambiance was typical for Mexican and we were served warm tasty tortilla chips with 5 different kinds of sauces. We just order 3 soft tacos and 3 crisp tacos which were so-so. Fernando the server was super attentive! he gave us the perfect amount of time to look over the menu, and exercised great patience. We were excited to have some Mexican food on our recent trip to Boone. Unfortunately, our top two choices were closed on Mondays so we chose Dos Amigos based on reviews. Not sure why the reviews are mostly positive...nothing special. First off, our waitress appeared to wish she was anywhere else but there. Maybe her dog died? Besides that, the value for what you got was decent but I'd rather spend a little more and get food with flavor. We tried a variety of entrees and results were the same. Not much flavor. I had the California Fajitas and the seasoning and the cut of mixed meats was different and scrumptious. Banana peppers was a variation I never had before, but I want again. I don't understand the 3 star or less reviews-- this place was amazing! TDLR version: the dips that came with the chips were all SO good, the food was delicious, our service was amazing, and the place was clean. DEFINITELY recommend. Long version: -Food: chips and dip were the best I've had (I've never had an array of dips served for free like this). My chimichangas were so delicious-- I will be ordering those again! My husband said his quesadilla was very good as well (we both admit the chimichangas were the best lol). It all came out perfectly cooked and in a timely manner! -Service: our waiter was wonderful, such a sweet guy. Drinks were refilled frequently, they checked on us multiple times and refilled our chips before we had to ask. They even provided extra napkins without us asking! -Atmosphere/cleanliness: it was clean with a good atmosphere. Maybe a little crowded in the area we were in, but that didn't bother me because the restaurant wasn't extremely busy when we went. I'm a travel nurse working in Boone currently, and I will DEFINITELY be back to eat here. I've been to Dos Amigos twice. The first time was with a group of coworkers and the second time was with my significant other. I love that they give you 4 salsa options right at your table, chips are always refilled as well as water, and food is ready quickly. Pros: Professional servers. Quick service. Waters always refilled. Cons: Tastes like every other Mexican restaurant in the High Country. Nothing about Dos Amigos makes them stand out as far as quality, quantity, and price. Things I wish were different: - Told the server about the spider webs/spiders near my table and nothing was done. I didn't make a scene but it is kinda gross. - Wish extra napkins were automatically provided but not a big issue, I just asked for them. - The fried ice cream was not fried, just vanilla with corn flakes on it. read more

Very good COVID protocols. In my mind, this is the best Mexican restaurant in Boone! There are certain things I look for in a good Mexican restaurant - salsa that isn't sweet tomato sauce. Theirs is flavorful and mild - but if you want something hotter just ask. I knew Dos Amigos was a winner when their shrimp ceviche was brought to the table. It was beautiful to look at. A few minutes later our server brought our food, set it down and walked off. Still no smile or apology. We had to ask for extra napkins, and our bill. Again, things placed on the table and off she goes. I know you folks can do better . Chile rellenos are wonderful. They seem to combine what the earth provides with poblanos and what mankind can do with milk to make queso. At Dos amigos they keep it simple and don't overdo by adding breading and eggs to the exterior. Love the Chile Rellanos here in Boone NC on a blue sky day. The cashier (Mimi) is the absolute sweetest soul. Always serves with a smile and super relatable. She is the main reason I eat there now.

First off this was the first time in a couple of years I have been her. Went many times as a student and a few times since. Good news is the service and food were great!! Bad news is that it is a good thing I am not a student anymore because it cost $45 for myself and my two children to eat!! Large cheese dip was almost $9. The times we live in I guess!!
