Local restaurant is down to take out only, but quality remains high! Fresh ingredients make their pizza stand out from any other in town! Brenda is friendly and efficient and gets the order right. Weekly pizza from Monte's is a must and always a favorite of company when in town. I wish other local eateries would use fresher ingredients across their menus. read more

Monte's may look like a typical small-town-Michigan diner when you pull up to the building, and when you walk in -- country music on the radio, well-worn rustic interior -- but it serves some amazing scratch-made Italian food, among other things. When we visited I started out with a rich, damn-the-calories full-flavored homemade cream of mushroom soup; I thought, "If this is what they can do with mushroom soup, I can't wait to try the rest of the meal!" I then shared a starter-sized plate of eggplant parmigiana with my partner; the eggplant was tender, flavorful and un-greasy, with a good balance of breading and cheese. My lunch entree, homemade cheese ravioli with homemade marinara, was delicious. (The marinara, a simple, un-tricked-out old-skool sauce, is also sold by the quart, along with the restaurant's soups, which may tell you something about their appeal.) The Italian menu includes a variety of pasta dishes and other entrees. Monte's also has an American menu, mostly diner food heavy on the deep-fried/flattop side, which is actually promoted more on the specials board than the Italian fare. On the plus side, the general menu includes a good selection of seafood, including that regional favorite, perch My partner had a mushroom Swiss burger that she enjoyed -- she had expected a bigger burger, but gave it extra points for being a hand-made, fresh patty rather than a frozen one. We had a late lunch, so the restaurant was rather quiet, but they were doing a pretty brisk takeout business -- another indicator that the restaurant is getting it right with the food. This was actually our second choice for a restaurant during our stop in Harrison, but we will definitely be back on a purposeful meal road trip! read more

Very good restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised with this place. The service was good and the food great. We had their daily special, Manicotti, You could have either meat or marina sauce and there was baked cheese on top. You also got soup, salad, bread and breadsticks. It all was very tasty and we even had leftovers. They have a varied menu but looks like Italian is their specialty. Wish they were on www.EatingSpecial.com so I could see their daily specials. 1/21/11 Update. Went back again but this time it was not as good. We didn't get their special but tried their Lasagna and their Sirloin steak. Lasagna tasted old and the steak was thin, but it was cooked correctly. Just not a good cut of beef. Soup, salad and bread was real good. So, I guess we still need to find out what they do best. The juries still out on them and I an changing my rating to three stars now. read more

This used to be one of, if not, the best place to eat in town. The menu is severely dated and the food and atmosphere is dated as well. Would be great to freshen the menu, keep the classic Montes Italian dishes but look for some new original Italian or American recipes that fit the restaurant. This is one if my favorite restaurants. If you like authentic Italian fare, try this place in Harrison, Michigan. The eggplant parmesan is to die for, as is their pizza. Locals rave about everything they make. The bread is homemade, and you get a basket of it when you dine in or take out with most meals. I'm looking forward to returning. read more

This is the best pizza I have ever had. I have been to a million pizza places in several states and it just doesn't get better than this. My family has been going there every time we go up north for over 25 years. You can taste the salt off the cheese, and the crust is thin, but still has a sweet doughy taste to it. The sauce is mild, but bright. It definitely is similar to New York Style pizza. The antipasto salad is simple but good, with an amazing vinagrette. And just last year I had the onion rings and eggplant parmesan for the first time and I was blown away. We literally spent $50 in a week just on pizza last year. No lies. Go immediately. read more

To find a decent meal in a restaurant without the motorcycle chain gang vibe so prevalent in this area is difficult. Monte's (shortened from the name "Tagliamonte") is a friendly place. The food is good. Sauce is very red and tastes of mostly oregano. I was told the meatballs were made in house, but they were not that good. Tasted like frozen to me. The meat ravioli were very good. The Lasagna was good but needed to be hotter. We could have easily sent it back, but we were tired and hungry. The service was excellent. FRIED CHICKEN!!! I saw it ordered by table next to us and they said it was excellent. Monte's doesn't bread it themselves. Damn. But at least it is fried and not that broasted garbage. Another table came in and said they were looking for the fried chicken that they had heard was the best in the area. The salad and soup that came with our meal was very good. The Italian dressing is fresh and tasted homemade. Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and radish on the salad. Vegetable soup and Chicken soup were good and homemade, too. read more

Probably the worst meal I've ever had. We walked in, stepping over a filthy floor with pieces of food, napkins, crumbs and who knows what. It was 4th of July weekend, so I made allowances - maybe they had been super busy. They weren't busy when we came in though, and the floor was never cleaned during our time there. Fried chicken seemed like a safe bet, and my guy and I both ordered it. I chose the Tuscan Bean Soup. Sounded good, it wasn't. Straight out of the can, I couldn't eat it. The salad was o.k., with commercial dressing. The chicken arrived, and I dug into a huge pile of mashed potatoes. Big mistake. They were rancid. At that moment, Richard said, "The potatoes don't taste right." He's usually uncritical, so that confirmed my experience. I ate some of the chicken and found it o.k. Richard said his was soaked in grease, so he didn't eat that either. We couldn't wait to get out of there. If it had been one thing, we would have mentioned it to the waitress, but when the whole meal was so awful - what's the point.? Based on the other reviews, maybe we should have tried the Italian food. Still hungry, we eventually made our way to Dairy Queen and made do with a couple of blizzards. They were good! read more

The worst! Found a hair in our lasagna cooked in! The staff was nonchalant & was going to charge us for half the meal still. We were appalled, asked for a manager, there isn't one. Said they were calling he owner at home (half the problem). Waited 5 min for him to "approve" taking the other $6 off. We were just shocked about how it was handled, they made US feel bad about our meal being ruined. Bunch of young, naive girls. So we told them that we are paying for it so we could get out of there before hubby got sick & out of principle to teach those girls a lesson. We don't need your money. We are loyal customers since the 70's & have been putting up with declining food out of traditions sake. That filthy hair in the lasagna & freezer burned salmon did us a favor - we won't be back. I just moved here & wanted to try Monte's because someone had raved about the eggplant Parmesan - a favorite of mine. I would rate it only OK & the sauce on the side of spaghetti was watery. My companion had a veal dish that was also so-so & a bit chewy. The staff seemed disorganized but very friendly. I guess I would try it again - other people were having sandwiches that looked pretty good. read more
