I joined Montuno dance company about 7 months ago in July, 2017 and haven't looked anywhere else since then. Prior to joining Montuno dance I had about 4 years of Salsa dancing experience and considered myself as an intermediate dancer, but after joining Montuno dance I found that even in the beginners level Isidro Corona (Montuno dance director, 5 times Salsa world Champion) breaks down the basics in so much detail which I never took time to think about and thus I have been taking both beginners and intermediate classes with Montuno dance ever since. Isidro trains his students with a whole lot of rigor and intensity. When I first started taking classes at salsa clubs, I thought I had it in the bag. But once I stepped foot into Isidro's training classes, the intricate details of the dance came to my immediate (and urgent!) attention. In his humble fashion, Isidro lent his expertise similar to the way a karate master would: You feel like you know absolutely NOTHING and from that space, all things can be created. Isidro and Ariel always encouraged me to bring in my hip hop experience to dance. They've showed me how to perform, what 'faces' to use (expressions), where to put the weight on various parts of my feet, how to lengthen myself - all details that I would never get from a traditional beginner or even advanced salsa class. I moved to the Bay Area about 1.5 years ago and I was looking to sign up for a class to get back into salsa dancing and I have to say, I'm so happy I went to Montuno. Montuno Dance was my first salsa encounter ever. I was never a social dancer or performer before (only little ballet recitals). And frankly MDC turned it into an obsession and took over my life. I just wanted to get better. And I learned something new every time I left the studio. You can imagine how personally rewarding it was. My team and my coaches became family. After spending a few months at a well known franchise dance studio, I realized I was not happy with the level of instruction. I searched around and was lucky enough to run across the Montuno Dance Instagram page. I signed up for the 8 week beginner salsa course and have not looked back since. Coaches are competitors, well trained, and friendly. Here I find the perfect mix of being pushed to be the best dancer I can be and also having a ton of fun in the process. Wow!!! Montuno dance company is amazing!!!! I've finally found a school with qualified dance instructors. I was referred by my best friend. She said that Asidro is a master at breaking down complex body movements of Salsa, piece by piece. Well I'm happy to say, that his 8 week series was worth every penny, and then some. No matter what your level, Asidro will make you look and feel like a dance pro. For me it was body rhythm. I was able to keep time to the music and I could execute very basic dance patterns, but I didn't look or feel like a dancer. What I learned here was that dance is a whole body team sport, we need to train the whole team to work together, that includes your elbows, knees, ankles, chest, feet, head, etc. The great thing about Asidro is that he has the patience and qualifications to teach the necessary drills and technique needed to train your whole body to dance. And it's stuff you can actually take home and practice by yourself. Last thing. I started salsa dancing a year before joining Montuno Dance Company. I have joined group classes here and there but always felt that I did not get much out of it. I decided to join Montuno Dance Company and it completely changed my dancing and life in general. Isidro emphasized on basic techniques, which is the most important base to have and completely change the way a beginner dance. I've been taking salsa at Montuno Dance for about a year and have to say Isidro's class has definitely improved my dancing. As far as I know, Isidro is the only instructor actually taking the time to teach technique. No only do you learn standard salsa steps, you learn the correct way to do them based on proper weight placement, resulting in the kind of hip movement you want to have in salsa. Each class generally starts with review and practice of these basics, and then leads to partnering. Partnering also includes technique such as proper hand placement and pressure, with the addition of styling. Oh, and if you like to spin, Montuno is known for its dancers' spins, and you'll learn what goes into that awesome technique. Montuno also offers performing teams in salsa and bachata. After seeing their salsa teams perform, I was inspired to join the beginning team and really enjoyed it due to the awesome, caring coaches (thanks Jim and Martha), fun routine, and friendly fellow team members. Performance salsa is another way to enhance your dance abilities through focus on technique, styling, and musicality. And all of this carries over to social dancing, too - I've had social dance partners tell me they've noticed the improvement!
