If they cost more, it's because they are genuine rarities. There's a listening station so you can try before you buy. I listened to a bunch of records and all of them were in *excellent* condition, even the very old ones. The owner is very friendly, and there's always great stuff being played. One very minor note: The frequent buyer program gives you stamps for each visit where you spend at least $25, instead of stamps for every $25 spent. So I could come by one week and spend $100 and get one stamp, but someone who lives nearby and makes two visits that same week and spends only $25 per visit gets twice the stamps for spending half the money. Not a big deal, most record stores don't have frequent buying programs at all. Maybe I'm missing the logic behind this one?

The store itself is on Manhattan Ave and easily accessible from the G. The selection is large enough to feature categories such as Japanese heavy psych-rock and hard bop jazz classics. They've got even more in storage: check their Discogs listings for a comprehensive overview. I've purchased several records from Grouch including a signed Bush Tetras 12" and a copy of Dew + Fumio Nunoya's 1971 live recording. Great condition and fair prices. I would recommend this shop to crusty old vinyl fiends and fresh young wax spinners alike.

Pleasantly surprised, but it's just not something I expected to see there. It's one of the nicest and best curated music stores I've seen in a long time. There's vinyl, but also CDs, DVDs, Laserdiscs, etc. (a variety of physical media). Plus record player accessories and well priced t-shirts. There is also interesting artwork on the wall (don't gloss over this if you visit). The shop has been open for a couple of months. When you go in, there is a newspaper framed on the wall that explains its genesis and how the shop came to be. The owner also has a podcast - The Sharp Notes with Even Toth. I recommend checking it out - especially if you enjoy flipping through stacks.

I wasn't fond of the way the vinyls were labeled as there weren't specific genre sections, but rather stuff labeled only by the artist name. I do have to say that some of the vinyls I saw there I had seen at other stores for a lot cheaper, so take that as you wish! You can also get things like vinyl cleaners and sleeves, which is nice, since sometimes other vinyl stores don't carry those. We didn't end up purchasing anything because the price was a bit too steep for us. Definitely nice set up though and good to spend some time browsing .

There are thousand and thousands of vinyl records in the basement of The Thing, and they are all $2. I recommend vinyl gloves and a mask when visiting, and not because of Covid. The store is not very clean, and you may not want to breathe the toxic dust in their basement. On my most recent trip I found a Gino Vanelli LP, a Manhattan Transfer LP, and a Mariah Carey cd that were all factory sealed. I hope that I will be this lucky the next time that I visit.

Spent about an hour going through the rows and found a few albums that I don't have. Nice! Some albums were priced, most aren't. When I asked the owner he said just give them to me and I'll work up a price. Not the way I like buying a bunch of records but I gave him about 8 or 9 to see where they were in pricing. (The priced albums were about what you'd expect to see). He then prices them based off of eBays listings. Not even sold listings but what people are asking. Albums that should be in the 3-5.00 range 15. Others that should be in the 8-10.00 range 25. Nope. I asked for the stack back and started putting them back where I found them. He realizes what I'm doing and wants to play lets make a deal. Instead of 25 for that, how about 20? How about 18? Sorry. I don't mind spending money, but I don't play this kind of stupid game at a register. I left empty handed. Do not see myself going back.

Very fun to spend an hour or two browsing. Ya never know what you might find in that next row of albums! Also, this store participates in Record Store Day! I'd recommend making it one of your first stops if you're in northern Jersey and looking to participate in the festivities! They seem to always have at least one copy of every major release coming out.
